I was 8 and 9 years old in 78 and 79. It was off the charts exciting watching that as a kid, who had an eye for cars. I remember the feeling of watching that pole lap live in 79. To see the car from the air going down Conrod and as it skipped across the mountain, I recall the horror of knowing he was going to get pole, as unfortunately I was a ford fan. BUt we knew he was the best. And the best-looking touring car ever the Marlboro Torana., infatuated me how something could look so good. RIP to Brock, but he had a good run, and made me a part time rev head.

Yeah some would argue the XW and XY Falcons are the best Aussie Muscle Cars but the ultimate was the A9X, the final evolution of the 70's Aussie race car....

Hey thanks for this video. I remember watching this race many moons ago. Interesting how different it was to the previous year. Johnson, always hitting something, rocks, trees, walls was out early. Colin Bond, one of the great drivers of the time went out early and other Fords doing what Fords do best. But the Fords looked bulky, heavy and old compared to the light and fresh looking A9X Hatch. With a true Aussie V8 and Australia's best driver it was an amazing win for Holden.

Glad you enjoyed it. Modern racing is nothing like this, in some ways, that's good, eg safety, in others, its a bit disappointing that we don't have the same differences in approach that encouraged such great racing.

Ive just never got used to the bend in conrod straight. It was so good originally. But it was a pretty steep hill they went up and eventually that poor guy flipped.

Yeah except when Richo was driving. '78 he had to come from behind a bit.

@@mattmatty4670 Not that I'm aware of. Got Pole, lead from start to finish, and set the lap record on the last lap while finishing 6 laps in front. Pretty good effort that one.
