Heya! I'd love to hear what you do (if anything) when it comes to skincare. Which products would you recommend? Which products would you stay away from? I'm super curious to hear about your routines and experiences. Any advice for a skincare newbie? ☺

Hey Arlene. I've got some tips and info for you. Spend your money on serums and active ingredients if you have to choose where to splurge vs save. Save money on cleansers and moisturizers. (The only cleansers I would splurge on are those with acids that you could leave on for a minute before rinsing, otherwise I tend to go for Cera Ve.) Also, thinner consistencies will always penetrate the best. So when I see (for example) vitamin C in a moisturizer (Sunday Riley has one) , I tend to avoid that, and look for that ingredient (vit c) in a serum instead. Same with all my active ingredients. (For the record active ingredients are things like antioxidants and acids.) Also the best antioxidants to use are Vitamin C (brightening, skin evening and firming) and Vitamin A (retinol-or any retin A derivative) which is the most studied skincare ingredient and is proven to produce more collagen, thickening the skin. Very important in anti aging. Besides those 2 antioxidants, Vitamin B3 is also good. It's also called Niacinamide and is really good for skin redness, skin evening and texture and fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin E is skin soothing, and it's beneficial to be included with your vitamin c serum. The other active ingredients I use frequently are acids. The 2 kinds I use most are alpha and beta hydroxy acids. Alpha hydroxy acids include citric (from citrus fruits), lactic (from milk enzymes) , malic (from apples and pears) , glycolic (from sugar), and mandelic (from almonds). They're great for chemical exfoliation to increase cell turn over that slows a lot with age. They work by loosening the bond that hold skin cells together. Really beneficial for glowy and less dull skin, and also can help your antioxidants penetrate better. Glycolic acid is really popular because its a smaller molecule and can therfore penetrate deeper and easier, however it also makes it more potent and therefore sensitizing. The other I listed tend to be more gentle, but are still beneficial. (I use the Alpha H glycolic serum and really like it. The drunk elephant TLC serum is really nice too. It has multiple AHAs in it. I also use the Biologique Recherche P1970 serum. It's a cult favorite you can get from Rescue Spa online. I highly recommend. It's got lactic and salicylic acid I believe. Not too harsh. Really great results! )
Betahydroxy acids work differently, by breaking up the debris inside the pores. Salicylic acid is the one you'll commonly see, and it's in a lot of acne type products, but some anti aging ones as well.
Btw there are some other antioxidants like CoQ10 and Resveratrol , but you don't see them as often.
As far as skin dryness, make sure you're drying your face fully as soon as youre done washing it. Allowing water to evaporate off of it actually sucks water out of your skin dehydrating it. So pat it dry quickly and fully. I also recommend a hyaluronic acid serum to hydrate. And before putting on its best to wet your finger tips to seal in extra water. (If you can get it I recommend the Maelove hyaluronic serum-any of their products actually, but there are all kinds of good affordable ones.) Also a moisturizer to top off your serums is a must, and ones with emolients like squalane, Shea butter, ceramides, almond or jojpba oil are ideal.
Anyway, hope some of this is helpful. 😊

I started getting into skincare about a year ago-at 39-because my skin started to get super dry and flaky. The biggest changes that have helped are gentle face wash, really good moisturizer and spf during the day. I’m taking my time to play around with exfoliants, retinols, and serums to see what works for my skin. So far Paula’s Choice BHA serum has been great for evening out my skin tone. Good luck!

I went through the same dry skin issue a few years back in my early twenties. Now I'm in my late twenties and I have learned that dry skin doesn't only need moisture but also needs non-physical exfoliation with an acid. I started using The Ordinary's glycolic acid on my body, face and scalp and its truly the only thing that has removed the dead/dry skin flakes. It is also super affordable and comes in a big bottle. I would suggest using it on your body first, and if your skin doesn't mind it, use it on your face and scalp. For face and body, simply apply with your hands on freshly cleaned skin with no other products on it, and 10-15 minutes later, follow it up with a moisturizer (do this before going to bed for best results). You're already on the right track with the CeraVe. As for the scalp, apply the glycolic acid 15 minutes before shower as a quick treatment and shampoo it off in the shower. You will come out of the shower with a fresh clean scalp and no signs of flakiness. Sorry if my comment is long. I've been a long time viewer and when you mentioned the dry skin issue, I knew I had to tell you about glycolic acid. Here is the link: theordinary.com/en-pk/glycolic-acid-7-toning-solution-exfoliator-100418.html

PS some people complain that glycolic acid burns or stings. Its because they use it wrong. Please use a small amount and very gently pat it into your skin. I won't recommend it when ur skin is oily in summer. Just use it for dry skin problems!

If you end up liking CeraVe I can really recommend their Cream to foam Cleanser and their Glycolic/Lactic acid treatment. Both are very gentle and hydrating and great for maturing skin! 😉

Those are some yummy grabs! I don’t think I’ve ever smelled yog nog..there isn’t a LUSH near me, so I may have to wait a year if it’s seasonal.😩
Skincare is great and you can almost always pass on the luxury items because they are usually repackaged versions of cheaper things. I follow a few dermatologists and my skin has never been happier. I’m at a point now where I know what works/doesn’t work and I’m just in a cycle of buying my staples.
A good cleanser, good moisturizer, lip balm/spf lip balm and sunscreen (very important), will take you a very long way.
Dr. Dre and Dr. Alexis Stephens here on youtube have great information. Looking forward to seeing you get that dryness under control.^^

For dry skin when it becomes flaky, you might want to try cream with urea. You might find there the Eucerin Repleneshing skin relief with 5% urea. I use ZEROID Richenic Cream with Urea 5% because at the time I couldn't find the eucerin in the states.

Arlene, skincare is one of those topics I could talk about almost as fluently as perfume! So of course I have to comment. :)
I have a few years head start on you, so take these thoughts as coming from a big sister.
    1) EVERYONE has an opinion on skincare. I would say it's more of a full spectrum (not just 2 types) between the 'soap and water' group to the '10+ step routine' group. This is just like the perfume community - lots of subgroups and niche interests, opinions and biases, with an added splash of fear mongering! My main suggestion is to listen to your own opinions and observe your results, then adjust if needed or if you just want to play around to explore. There is no "perfect" or "right" answer for everyone, even if you hear that from strongly opinionated people who seem to make skincare into a moral cause. I love feeling like I'm on the perfect path in any topic, but I found out after many years that it doesn't exist! A basic cleanse + moisturize routine can be just as ideal as a 30 minute nightly ritual.
    2) Agreed: age and hormone changes are key reasons for skin getting drier. And because skin is an important part of overall health and happiness, you could also consider consulting a medical professional, especially if you don't feel like your trials are getting you decent results. Dry skin is not comfortable and can really affect quality of life if it gets extreme, it's not just about "looks." What can be dismissed as "just" dry skin could be a symptom of other health changes.
    3) My opinion is that licensed medical dermatologists have the most useful and well rounded content on ingredients, efficacy, root causes of issues, etc. The three main channels I trust on YT are 1) Dr. Dray 2) Doctorly and 3) Lab Muffin Beauty Science (Michelle). All have pros and cons.
    - Dr. Dray is more no nonsense. She's a physician scientist, so not only does she have experience seeing patients, but also doing research, which brings a broader perspective. She has her own biases, for example, she hates overpriced products and doesn't like to recommend them even if they're technically fine to use. She is extreme about sunscreen and may seem a little quirky. But she knows what she's talking about and takes her role seriously.
    - The Doctorly channel has 2 derms who are also knowledgeable, but they're more likely to praise products at all price points and can *seem* like they want to be more "entertaining" than educational.
    - Michelle (from Lab Muffin) is a cosmetic chemist, so her perspective is unique but still quite informative if you're curious about how products are formulated.
There are several other reputable sources, but it can be difficult to find straightforward advice in a sea of influencing and affiliate links.
Ok I'll stop. See?! Way too much. We should have coffee and chat sometime. ;)

Hi! Thank you so much for your insight, I really appreciate it! I'll definitely be taking my time with trying new things. There's just SO much info/ads/claims out there it's so easy to get lost in it all. Also thanks for recommending the YT channels. Dr. Dray has come up a few times already so I'll check her channel out first. Coffee and chat would be awesome! ☕😊

I love skincare. I've been into it for about a decade. I did a lot of research to educate myself so I feel like I have a good understanding of what ingredients are important, what they do and how to layer and mix (or not mix) products. Im 42 now and I get told all the time I look much younger. (Patients will ask me how long I've been a MRI tech and when I tell them they're surprised and immediately ask how old I am.) So it must be working! I'll give my parents some credit too. Lol. Anyway it's very cool that youre starting skin care. But for the record your skin looks great!! That being said skincare can only help keep it that way. 😊

Yes, important to take care of your skin! Azeeno daily cream with SPF is gentle. I use the CeraVe eye cream, very nice. Just try the creams for sure, and maybe go slower on all the ‘active ingredient’ treatments. Good luck! And Happy New Year!

Ive been experimenting as well over the last year. I like la Roche posay cleansers, because I like how my skin feels clean but not stripped after.
In the am, I just cleanse, vitamin c (Murad), and moisturize/apply sunscreen.
Pm I apply either Paula’s choice bha 2% or Génifique serum. I always use a rich night cream with retinol like olay or lancome purple jars. I’m experimenting also with different exfoliants and serums.
I love cerave body cream and will sometimes add a spritz of perfume on my palm when I apply it. I like bumbum cream also but maybe more for the scent and the richness. I think cerave is more effective.
I also have been very happy with versed gentle retinol body lotion to “resurface” my arms and legs.
I look forward to what everyone has to say.

I find skincare worth it because there are actives that target issues I have with my skin. I think it can be a fun investment for people who have nearly perfect skin, but I have heard those people getting into actives actually makes their skin worse. Sometimes less is more, so I’ve whittled down my routine to cleanser, treatments (tretinoin, niacinamide, vitamin c), and moisturizer. I like the After Baume from Glossier for a moisturizer as it’s occlusive and keeps my skin from drying out from prescription tretinoin.

I like using prescription retinol- much better deal than any fancy products. Other than that I like hyaluronic acid and La roche posay cicablast balm. I have dry skin and I put aquaphor healing ointment on at night. All pretty affordable but really help!

I got into skin care at 35. So it's been five years of consistently wearing a sun screen every day and washing my face every night. I just repurchased CeraVe hydrating face wash. The cream to foam one was also good. I've used several different products, but the ordinary is a brand I've purchased from several times. First aid beauty ultra repair cream is really hydrating but not sticky and safe for sensitive irritated skin that I use on face and body. I occasionally get an eczema type spot on my eyelids and the ultra repair cream doesn't irritate it. I recently tried a BRIOTECH Hypochlorous Acid Spray from the zon. Tower 28 has one called sos spray that costs way more. It's a hydrating spray that I use like a toner / face mist at the start of my routine. My mom's disabled and was having issues with dead skin build up and also dry cracked skin. Her problem is she can't stand over a sink to wash her face or bathe daily. I got her some soft face cloths (off brand makeup erasers) to use with micellar water to clean. Then the hypoclorous spray and skin lotion. There are good options at trader Joe's (us grocery chain) that she's been liking. The ordinary's three different face moisturizers are all good and reasonably priced. Farmacy honey halo is a nice grade but not crazy overpriced cream that I really enjoyed. Something that I'd like to catch on sale again when I've used my other things up. They are at Sephora but also run better sales on their website.
I need to look up the dermatologist on yt that I follow to share with you

I love the American Cream scent in the conditioner the absolute most! Secondly in the shower gel. I wasn’t really a fan of the perfume interpretation. It didn’t work well for my hair (none of lush’s hair products worked well for my thick dry hair) but sometimes I layer it over because it smells so good!

  • @ohheyyola5416

I would recommend sticking to Cerave and try their hydrating foaming oil cleanser and blemish control resurfacing retinol serum for some retinol in your routine. Better and way cheaper than good genes as a resurfacing step. K and J beauty is way cheaper and effective imo. Try Hada Labo, Torriden, P Calm or skin 1004 for hydrating and plumping products. Cant go wrong with whatever range you pick.

I love skin care, makeup and perfume. I’ve tried so many different brands. But, found It doesn’t have to be expensive. I use tretinoin 0.025 in the evening. Everything else is Japanese and Korean. I wash my face with Shiseidos Senka brand perfect whip. Every night and morning. In the AM after I wash my face I use Natorie Hatomugi skin conditioner, Hadalabo hyaluronic lotion, Cosrx 96 mucin and for my moisturizer Cosrx snail 92 all in one cream. I just turned 57 and I have no lines on my face. Also, I obviously don’t try to tan. I used to work for plastic surgeons. They said as soon as your skin changes color it’s damaged.

Nothing wrong with not using creams. My bf is like you , never puts cream on his face because is too oily. He is 40+ and not a single wrinkle. I use all kind of products since in my 20s ,( same age as you) and all I can say is that the most important cream is sunscreen , hydration , clean food and a plain cream. The rest are waste of cash.
