Hmmmm I just think it was his time. He was one of the most consistent SF V player and already cemented his place as one of the best in 6. He is very competitive, sometime arrogant and may say things that give him a bad look. I'm far from being a fan of his tantrums but seeing him getting emotional is a proof that it matters a lot to him, not just to flex but to show he can do it.
SF6 is admittedly way less frustrating than other fighting games. Still frustrating because the DLC characters are all overturned to shit, but much less so.

Punk and I were on the same flight back from Europe. I chatted with him briefly -- he's cool and down to earth. I was a fan before, but so happy he finally got this EVO title.

No pop-off, waited for Big Bird to compose himself to hug after the game, and had some tears. If he had a lost, I wouldn't be surprised if he went on a rant, but I'm glad this didn't happen. I don't think he would have been able to mentally recover if he had lost 2 Evos.

Punk was hounded by the masses for choking when it truly mattered. To have that follow you for years takes a toll. Yes, he has won other major tournaments, but Evo is THE tournament. He has been a top 3 player in SF6, but today, he is the #1 player in the world. Regardless of how people see him, you know this was everything to him.
I am freaking out and crying at that win… it means a lot seeing Punk pull that off after all this time it’s amazing. Pushing through years of being told you choke and then when it seems like it’s the same story again Punk pulled through and really did it. I’m so sooo fucking happy he won. Watching him play and rooting for him with cammy was what got me invested in fighting games at all. Amazing matches and god damn did big bird make him work for that. Imagine the mental fortitude to overcome multiple chokes at 2nd place at the biggest stage, at point he looked like he was cracking and it would happen again. But at the end he did it.

You can see punk has evolved. When he lost a game, or a set, he knows how to smile and laugh at it. He is enjoying the game more now and realize there's more to it than winning or losing. Yup! Both matches were awesome, and I really thought Endingwalker would go to finals, but Big Bird adapted really well not only to his playstyle, but to Punk's too, since he lost so fast the first time, and then on the finals he put up a big fight

After such emotional losses (Tokido in sfv Evo grand finals and Idom in sfv Capcom Cup), he was able to finally prove to all the doubters and haters that he belongs and that he will be one of the greatest of all time. I am freaking out and crying at that win… it means a lot seeing Punk pull that off after all this time it’s amazing. Pushing through years of being told you choke and then when it seems like it’s the same story again Punk pulled through and really did it. I’m so sooo fucking happy he won. Watching him play and rooting for him with cammy was what got me invested in fighting games at all.
