That is necessary when it's a ball valve or the needle valve. On the 90 degree type of valve, the internal construction is the same ball and seat design as found in the gun. Though you do make a point in that a gun kit can be found for $49 and the valve goes for $79.

You should relieve the pressure from the gun instead of dumping through the priming valve or it will prematurely wear out
