Budgeting is stressful, but you did really well. I have €20 a week, sometimes a little less, it's not a fun amount, but I'm in the privileged position to have a cheap market nearby that allows me to sustain a vegan lifestyle. Doing these challenges makes you channel more relatable for people who have less.

@The Honey Boost For many people who are on a strict budget, buying in bulk is not an option; overall it would save money, but you have to have the capital to buy in bulk first. For those trying to save money and do have a little monetary flexibility, buying in bulk is a great option to save money.

I love Trader Joe’s. Their extra firm pressed tofu is the best tofu ever. No pressing at allllllllll. It’s amazing.
Also yes! Those lentils! Lifesaver for quick meals. We love making sloppy joes with them.

When I used to have a crazy low budget, I would take an inventory of what I had and what I could make with what I had prior to going to the grocery store. I would buy the fill in items for my menu and then with the rest of my money I would stock up on whatever was cheap that would last: canned goods or frozen items

Linda S yes, good video but I was smiling in places where it is obvious that Caitlin doesn't often think about food prices. Like nut butters - yep, anything except peanut is a once in a blue moon treat. For me personally, I make my shopping list based on what's on sale. I also rarely buy name brand items if a store brand is available or unless I know there's a quality difference. Why pay for advertising? Beans are beans, corn is corn...

    • @LindaASJ
      @LindaASJ 4 года назад +6

Desertbluecat NM I know, I was thinking dried beans, rice, oats, noodles. I could do a week on $20. BTW, a week is 7 days, lol. Back in the day if I had $50 for groceries I would have thought I’d made it for real. So happy not to be in my broke 20’s.

I seriously spend $100-200 every damn week for groceries and it takes several hours so I just get super overhwlemed and anxious so I spiral into this black role, end up not grocery shopping for months and up not eating and binging on random shit like chips. THIS IS QUITE LITTERALLY A LIFE SAVER. I meal prepped last week for the first time using all your recipes and my life is changed. I absolutely love you

The pure delight on your face when you realised there were two blocks of chocolate in each bar - I felt so in sync haha. I live in the UK but I've been to Trader Joe's a couple of times in the past - never realised quite how much plastic was used in their products, especially for such a seemingly 'green' company (I guess that's how they getcha!) But that aside, loved this video, Caitlin - can't wait to see the meal prep video!

Also: It'd be awesome to see you do a video series like this (haul + meal prep) or honestly even just a meal prep for someone who needs to eat more calories. I'm not sure how much your fiance eats (if he has a big appetite you could just use him), but otherwise maybe a family member or a friend. I think an athlete would be great.
I love pulling ideas and suggestions from you, but I also know I can't 100% copy your recipes if I want to feel full. Just a video suggestion.

I live in Finland, it's a pretty expensive country. I'm studying right now and my husband is working but he will soon be entering school too so we will prob need to get student loans to stay afloat. It's stressing me out pretty bad. I'm nervous about what we will buy as overall Finland is expensive, including groceries. I think the cheapest things we have are root vegetables but not the entire year mainly in the winter...the only thing that's cheap the entire year is potatoes and carrots. I'm going to have to be creative and plan. I will be visiting my parents (US) in the winter of this year (my dad, bless his heart, is buying my flight). I'm latina and there are great Mexican grocers nearby so I will def buy lots of beans, rice in bulk as well as tortillas and other staples from Goya like guava paste etc. Thanks for videos like this Caitlin

I suggest you make your weekly shopping in the big S-Market/Varuboden,- the bigger they are, the cheaper the prices. Their own trademark - Rainbow - is pretty good, at least when it comes to many veggies. Green peas are around 70cents/can, Indian corn - around 80 cents/can, and the can of such a size, which is enough for a good hearty sallad for one person. 500 grams of good, juicy plum-tomatos - around 1,50-1,80€, depending on the season. I hope, both you&your husband have S-Market bonus-card, which really helps to save money, and also K-Plussa bonus-card, which is useful, when you buy in K-markets (the ones, which sell Pirkka-brand,- also good and inexpensive). In the worst case, you may try to find out, if you&your husband are intitled to get a financial help from Kela or commune (municipality). Good luck with your studies!

I was able to get a full week's worth of vegan food for $27 (filling 2 large grocery bags). They are also good about not using plastic packaging on their produce, just make sure to bring your own reused plastic bags for the bulk section.

RayaWasHere as someone on a budget it’s actually not the same (at least in the greater Seattle area). I’d love to reduce plastic but if you’re on a tight budget it’s nearly impossible. Even the bulk bins at Fred Meyer are more expensive per ounce than the same packaged item on the shelves. It’s pretty frustrating.

Most things that are wrapped in plastic are cheaper because they don’t get damaged as quickly as items that aren’t wrapped in plastic. Unwrapped items end up going into the trash can at a faster rate than the wrapped

Yeahhhh, that’s just not true. I would love to shop at the nice, big grocery chain here (giant eagle-western PA) but it’s ridiculously overpriced, absolutely everything. Aldi and Trader Joe’s are much cheaper. I just about fainted at how much simple things cost at giant eagle when I shopped there for the first time.

If I plan on making something like onions and bell pepper, I will buy ONE instead of bulk and they all rot.

I just discovered your channel. I love Trader Joes, every time I go to the States I always make a stop there, but I spend way more than 50$ 😭 They have so many incredible snacks!

As soon as the pandemic is over I'm defiantly going to make a visit! I live in Canada so we have no locations here sadly. I live in Toronto so closest location is Niagara Falls, NY, about 2.5 hours away!
Really excited to try the Pesto sauce and their Gnocchi!

Can you do a regular grocery store next time? Many people don’t have a Trader Joe’s near them.

That says flex is very important for omega threes but not the pre-ground stuff goes bad a lot sooner than you think just grind it up fresh and it’s cheap enough by in the holes seed

If you shop at a store on a regular basis and get many of the same items, you kind of know the prices and can make a list and budget based on that before going in. I can be in and out of TJ's in 15 mins, and if I have a list (on paper, no electronics for that for me) with a certain amount I'm planning to spend I'm usually within a dollar or two of that, as long as I stick to the list (sometimes I elminate an item or two and replace it with something else and still come very close).

I’m in the UK and we don’t have a trader joes but I regularly shop in Aldi and without trying to budget I can do a shop with £25-£30 vegan for a week+ a few days. I love watching your videos though

I literally wish i had 50 dollars a week for food!!! it’s crazy to think that 50 dollars a week is considered a tight budget!! i come from a pretty well off family but i’m in uni right now and only have ~ 35 dollars a week for food

I love trader Joe's but I never buy produce there unless I plan on eating it that day. Their produce goes bad so quickly! Love the garlic spread, vegan cheese shreds, cilantro jalapeno hummus, tempeh, Soyrizo and Thai Chile cashews.
