  • In this episode we see Peter Minuit promote himself to Director and save the fledgling colony of New Netherland. The purchase of Manhattan is made, at least the Dutch are made to believe so, most of the colony is relocated to the Island and a solid treaty is made with the Mohawk that will last until the end of New Netherland. Minuit truly saves the day...

    I am fascinated by that map of Lenapehoking, because the borders of the dialects roughly match the borders of South, Central, and North Jersey (and it’s more or less NJ and everywhere that feels like NJ)

    Just be clear, the primary source written by Peter Schagen wasn't a legally binding contract. The "sale" was mentioned in passing, but the focus of the letter is more a like a ship manifest.

    It is important to know that Flemish and Walloons played an important role in the foundation of New York and Delaware, not the Dutch.

    As a direct descendant of the New Netherland, French was NOT the main culture. It was Dutch, German (Westphalen Germans), Flemish and Walloon, with a smattering of British and Slaves. My family tree is full of Van this and Van that, with one or two Du Cloix and De Forrest lines from Belgium. Most of my mother's family tree is traceable from the Dutch Reformed Church records.

      You are right, however in this narrow time the episode details DWIC is sending over many speakers of French at this very early time. As you will hear in later episodes they will be overwhelmed by other groups before the end of New Netherland.

    Do you know of the wars between the Iroquois and the Neutrals ?

      @theotherstatesofamericahis5212  2 года назад +1

      There may be a short blurb about it here, but otherwise you will not find much on the Neutrals, especially compared to the Huron, as the Jesuits had less of a presence. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/iroquois-confederacy-vi-the-alleged-beaver-wars-part/id1507224670?i=1000504778513

      As I understand it, the 5 Nations took out the Neutrals and used southern Ontario as hunting grounds for the fur trade. Eventually the 5 nations moved north for more pelts and were pushed back by the Mississauga people, who then stayed in Ontario until they were joined by European settlers, and eventually the 6 Nations who allied with the British.

      @@ryandugal it sounds like their history may have become more enmeshed with the Hudson Bay Company ala John Jacob Astor. By 1776 or so they had spread pretty much to the pacific but hunkered down in Vancouver post the 13ish colony psuedo-divorce from the Brittish. The Hudson bay co also merged with its competitor on the west coast (maybe south bay co. Can't remember) around that time. Amazingly enough, they are still in business. Partly in real estate (you don't say.. .go figure) specializing in retail space rentals for dept stores.

      To the literary record of history point. There is surprisingly very little omparitively for a lot of important historical people beyond a whole lot of cross-polinating mythologized romantic prose. I have found sometime you find a keyword unique to that time period or person that unlocks the door to the search engine library. The book publishers printers seemed to go brrrrr at the first sight of rehashed pulp quite often
