Thank you. After seeing your video, I got the courage to DIY with the Tesla paint kit. I scraped my rocker panel (about 2 ft long and 1/2 inch at its widest point). Followed the instructions but I wasn't getting good results. Finally the paint applicator broke. So I used a grade school paint brush that worked much better. This time, I used the fine tip to stay within the scrape and had no overpaint to wipe off. Since the scrape was on the rocker panel, the touch up is barely noticeable, but if it were up higher on the door, it would have been in the body shop.
What are the updates on the scratch? I scratched the bottom corner of the rocker panel. My biggest concern is fixing this before i het rust. How has ur fix held up? Do you have salt and snow stuff to deal with. Thanks.
@@oscara8746 So far so good. The touch-up paint has held up well. I live in warm weather, so no snow and no road salt. When my car got scratched, I didn't notice any bare metal, so I did not think I would have a corrosion issue.

Highly recommend the Lift Master garage door opener that connects directly to the door shaft. It is completely off to the side. No belt, chain or screw track or bracket down the center of the ceiling. And, with the Lift Master Internet Gateway on your wireless network you can check on and control your opener from anywhere away from home! So sad the huge scratch happened, but it would not have happened with a direct drive opener! BTW, I already scratched my new Deep Metallic Blue Model 3 on the rear right wheel well pulling into the garage too close to the opening. Bought the Tesla paint repair kit $50, but am turning it over to a detailing professional to do the work.
Oh I feel your pain. Haven't seen any videos from you lately so was delighted to find this one as I just got my repair kit for our Model Y. I backed into a license plate holder 1 month after getting it :(( I now have 2 small dent/scratches on the hatch that I see everytime I walk up to the car. I covered them with 2 small squares of white tape until the kit arrived. I am about to try the repair today so really appreciated the video. Hopefully it will help me not notice it everytime I walk by. The ptsd is just starting to improve. Hope all is well with your young family. I am sure your wife felt terrible. Yes it looks like the body of your car took a hit which goes beyond paint, I don’t think it looks bad it almost looks like an intended body groove if you’re not looking too closely lol , the paint job looks amazing tho it did a perfect job , thanks I’ll buy the kit
I always tell my passengers to get out before parking in the garage. And if I'm leaving or need something from the back, I'll use summon to move the car outside.
Tried to get a scratch covered this exact same way on my previous car. Frustrating and fruitless. I’m convinced it can’t be done. By the way...I’ve had my Model 3 for a month now. I want to say a huge thanks for getting and keeping me interested in Tesla before and during my long wait. It was well worth it and your videos made the wait much, much easier. that is a deep groove.. that may require some sanding and a little body filler. I think that it would drive me crazy... off to the body shop :) but I want to give you a big thumbs up for giving it a go.
that is more than I would attempt. I have watched videos of how it can be done, but it requires more sanding, filling in, then priming and painting and I would leave it to professionals.. it looks better, but still noticeable.. stuff happens.
Curious why Tesla does not make the kit available for the multi-coat red or the white colors. My guess: These are ordinary colors that are available from other sources. OR there is something that makes it more difficult on white or red paints... It is not that they are non-metallic (as you suggested in the video), I think, because the kit is offered for the plain (non-metallic) black. it is also curious that it is available for the Signature red but not for the multi-coat red....
Checkout a paintless dent repair person. They will be able to pop out that groove for a heck of a lot cheaper than a body shop and then your paint repair kit will work a lot better!
This was one of the best videos you made. Not many people can make a “watching paint dry” video so entertaining. I would have been sick to my stomach when I first heard or saw that scratch. At least you edited out the part where you accidentally named the culprit. LOL
Brandon, that is a Whopper! I have the same color but 3 years worth of sun/fade on my S. Is it safe to use rubbing alcohol normally? I realize washer fluid is also alcohol based and doesn't seem to eat my paint.
Great video. I'm not sure I would have been able to do a video as you did. I'm not mature enough. You did a very professional video and I can see now that we could use more videos of repairs like this. In this case you made it look very honest in how we real world people might take on a job like this and I think I might not have had as nice of an outcome. My old days of trying to do any art paintings with brushes and such always looked more like my 2nd grade finger paintings that gotnputnon the refrigerator. Yes sad to say I would have finger prints everywhere. I'll pray this video goes super viral and helps earn enough to take the sting off. It also does not matter how it got there. Its after all only a cars paint. Everyone is safe and warm and will make for a good story one day. Replace that door opener with the new opener that attaches to the spring shaft directly. there's an opener that doesn't have that arm? we had the opener replaced under home warranty a few years ago so I wouldn't replace the whole thing at this point

Great video, thanks for doing that. Yeah, that may need a real repair ($1000! Dunno why it needs to be blended, aren’t they using the same paint?!). The actual damage does look like it’s dented from the reflection; it’s definitely going to need some at least minimal body work. The aluminum is so fragile, pressure deforms it. But the garage door opener: whoever installed it (my bad if it was you!) should have removed that vertical bar’s overhang. It’s definitely too long; should not extend beyond the curve of the part that goes to the actual door. Avoidable. Sorry, man! If that was my car, I’d be pissed. We have a tight garage also and hung a horizontal bumper from the garage door opener track between the two cars; this keeps the right car’s driver’s door from hitting the one on the left. Works great. Just an idea. -Lee
Thanks for the video its good to see this new product they have... but I think a blue marker would have done just as good. Also a hacksaw and 5 minuets would have prevented this all together. A follow up video of the professionally paint job would be cool too!

The rated mileage difference brand new between our S75D and our former X100D is all of 36 miles, but in my head it makes all the difference in the world. We will be taking delivery of our replacement X100D in the summer.
I have eXpel and I'm not sure it would save this kind of hit to the paint. If the scratch did not dent the panel I think eXpel might of had a chance. The only time it got tested on my car was about 3" long and hard to say about being deeper or not but again no metal deformed and the hairdryer removed the scratch completely. I have since looked at the eXpel and can not find Any evidence of the old mark. Really, completely gone. Since then about a year later I had the glass coating added and it really helps when washing the car, much faster now. 5 minutes where it was more like 15 to 20 before.

I plan on driving the wheels off mine over the next 25 years so it was easy to make this call. Others will say why spend that now, let the paint wear out then use that money for a new paint job. They just don't know how bad of an idea like that is. A 6k paint job is not that good these days, 1st its not factory. 2nd a lot of attention to paint thickness will be important for all the sensors and MX has wing door sensors. When the eXpel needs to be removed 10 years later you will have a fresh factory paint job and can cover it again or enjoy the factory finish on a 10 year old young tesla. The only thing that you have to do is not get into a crash witch will undo everything. I have 15 and 20 year old cars that are original so I'm betting on my driving protecting my finish.
Teslavangelist ah. We lowered our deductible from 1000 to 250 so it was an easy decision to get it professionally fixed. I was surprised though at the cost, came out to over 2000. I’m sure it was a Tesla tax.

Go right now and take a hand held cutoff wheel and cut that paint scraper off that garage door. My wife put a gash in her new Prius after she opened the hatch and then promptly closed the garage door.
panel is depressed, sorry. not fixable. not worth to paint it eithe,r other things will happen to the car too... just take deep breath and let it go.. talking from my own experience..
Bro watch the 400 videos showing how to actually do this . Can totally do it … need to use a buffer and build that paint way up and wet sand it back down. Your video should not be up. That repair is not even a repair. Trust me watch the tons of pros on RUclips
Yeah, for deep scratches at least. Paint kits don hide tiny nicks quite well though. But even for the small stuff, my body shop only charges $40-50 for small chip repairs, so still easy to have them take care of it.
Tesla Paint Repair Kit is crap. This kit is used to fill in a scratch to stop rust nothing more tell you can get to someone that can fix it right. I used this on a black model X Tesla thinking, ok, put this on and then polish all the scratches out. Man, was I wrong. The polish just removed the paint
Teslavangelist a properly designed automobile would never have put the doors in that kind of harms way....just wait til you start having leaks and operating failures from those doors

yeah filler would have helped, but I was surprised it didn't have more gloss to it, so it would still look like a flat matte line

that's interesting. When I looked at the list I guess I saw so many metallics I assumed it was just those.

Get one of those plastic door edge guards and glue it onto the metal bar on the garage door.

I don't know for sure, but the guy that does the protective film installs said he does an alcohol wash first so I figured it was safe.

they bill differently I think when they work with insurances, maybe by pre-contracted rates, so it can be less when you go out of pocket
