  • In late 1991, Simon travelled to the newly-independent nation of Azerbaijan. The former Soviet Republic was just beginning to take control of its own economic destiny, and determining how best to develop the country's on-shore and off-shore oil fields. After decades of under-investment in the Soviet era, this report illustrates some of the remarkable economic challenges faced by the USSR's constituent parts.
Today, US television networks rarely visit Azerbaijan, despite the country's geopolitical importance on the global stage. This story first aired on "World Monitor", the nightly newscast then-produced for America's "Discovery Channel" by The Christian Science Monitor Newspaper.
