I'm a 66 y/o grandma. When I was 3 my dad brought me with him to pick some asparagus he had seen growing in a little field near our home. As he was going along picking here and there, he'd turn over flat stones and things. I didn't know why until there was a garter snake. It startled me so much and I jumped back! He told told me when I was older that I said,"Where the hell did that come from!" Usually people can't remember much from when they were that little, but remember that! Vividly!

Herper's Paradise. I've visited Florida before where I caught rough green snakes, a corn snake, and a black racer. I've done tons of herping in California, where I've caught gopher snakes, ringneck snakes, sharptail snakes, California kingsnakes, a coast mountain kingsnake, western yellow-bellied racers, California striped racers (perhaps my favorite), and at least a couple species of garter snakes, and have seen rattlesnakes. But it took days to find the snakes in Florida, and a period of years at multiple sites to encounter all those species in California (I've always wanted to catch a coachwhip and a rubber boa as well, but still haven't found them). I've never had anything like what you guys are finding in Louisiana, though, all in one day! Most of my herping was back when I was growing up in the seventies, eighties, and nineties, but these videos remind me how much I love it, and I'll have to do more of it at some point in my life. Of course, having all that excellent ground cover really makes a difference, because you have to be lucky to find snakes just basking or wandering about out on the surface. If I ever had a big patch of undeveloped land I would scatter wooden boards in all the best-looking spots and check them periodically for snakes. You guys don't seem to pay much attention to the lizards, though. They're pretty cool too, but often harder to catch than the snakes.

In Tennessee, and I'm sure other places, so many mistake banded water snakes for cottonmouths, as well as think corn snakes are copperheads. I know one thing, water snakes can be ill-tempered and bite the hell out of you. Still, I loved flipping rocks around water, looking for them. Another great video !

Looks like you herp in those areas quite often. Suggestion: If you turn the metal sheets that overlay each other at angles so that the ribs do not align - it will create a greater number of deeper voids that critters can hide in. Your subsequent visits should have higher yields due to the increases in the number of hiding places beneath each pile of offset sheets..
