Backpacking the Selway River Trail

- Where to go backpacking in the early season when the mountains are still full of deep snow? My buddy Chris and I decided to try hiking along the Selway River in Idaho, hoping that the river corridor would be free of snow and the feeder streams not impossible to ford. This was a 4-day trip, covering 50 miles out and back from Race Creek Trailhead to Moose Creek Ranger Station in April, 2022, and it led to some great surprises.

Thanks for the video! My wife and I just hiked this race creek/moose creek and back route this past week. Your video was very close to what we experienced. We met with multiple kayakers and rafters coming down from Paradise. Apparently they have to hire a company with modified 4x4s to get over Nez Perce Pass this time of year. We met a very friendly caretaker at Moose Creek RS named Fred who gave us the tour. Saw groups with pack Llamas, Pack goats, and Pack Mules. The FS sent in a pack train of 16 mules to haul in new wood shingles for the rebuilding of one of the cabin roofs at Moose Creek. Had a bush plane land right next to us on the airstrip. Saw lots of blue tailed skinks, ducks, geese, eagles, deer, elk, a few bears, and two ticks. Only rained 1 day out of our 4 days. We tracked the trail with GPS and tracked 25 miles if you go all the way to the ranger station (50 miles round trip). Water went from a clear flow on our way in to muddy brown on our way out, and rose a foot our last day due to the warming temps. Beautiful Country!
Thanks for the update! We decided to hike the Snake River this year (video out soon), but were very nostalgic about the Selway and debated just going back there again. Love that country!
You had me at "Selway ~ Bitterroot wilderness"....😏
Great place to explore!! Thanks!
I hiked in this area last summer, into the Selway Crags. What a beautiful place!
Oh, that's very cool. I've been wanting to explore the Crags . . . how was it? Did you bushwhack around to different lakes, or are there 'sort of' trails that aren't on the maps?
@@ShastaBubba, you have it right. There was a good trail up Big Fog Mtn, and from there the trails are sporadic or nonexistent. We camped in the South Three Links Lakes basin and then headed over Jesse Pass to Cove Lakes. We couldn't find a trail down to Cove Lakes and it was a horrible bushwack through thick stands of willow and alder. Other than that it was great!
@@hikingwheather Awesome, thanks so much for the info!
Long time, no see ! Great video Dan ! Loved it !
Feels great to be back out there again!!!
Really like the conversation at then end 🙂
Thanks for the feedback (and for watching that far. Impressive!) 😂😎
Very nice video! Thanks for sharing! I’ve been up there twice this year but only for quick overnighters. Beautiful area
Thanks for watching! You're right, there's tons of beautiful country to explore in the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness.
Those boaters obviously came across Nez Perce Pass. I am not sure that is going to happen in April this year, but it is amazing what those guys go through to get access to the Magruder corridor. They probably had to pay some extreme four-wheel drive enthusiasts to haul them across the pass. I have looked at maps for a route from Lost Horse on the MT ID border to hike down to the Selway and come out at Paradise. Those trails in there are often very iffy so I need to talk to someone who is more familiar with routes that are more than ghost trails on a map. It has been a few years since I have been in the lower Selway, so it was nice to see it again.
I was wondering about that too. Thought I heard/read somewhere that they try to open the road as far as Paradise RS asap, but don't know if that's accurate.
I do know from experience that a great trip (after July 1) to end in Paradise is from the Tin Cup TH to Tin Cup Lake, up over the divide and down through Triple lakes, then follow White Cap Creek all the way on out. Someday, I hope to combine that with hiking the upper Selway and maybe out Moose Creek, but that would be epic (and risky due to unknown trail conditions).
@@ShastaBubba In my younger days, we would hire a four-wheel enthusiast who would take us to Paradise (over several feet of snow) the last weekend before the permit season for the Selway River would start, and we would self contain kayak our way down the river from Paradise. I would think that is what those river runners had done as well, unless they flew all their gear into Moose Crk for a very expensive short trip out. I have seen and read about that Tin Cup to Paradise as well. That trip along White Cap looks like a lot of walking through the trees though. There is a Crk on the Idaho side of Lost Horse that if done at the right time of the year, that has giant King Salmon spawning in it that would be very cool do see. That is why that route has fascinated me. But as you know, the Selway Bitterroot trail system is not what it appears to be on a map,
@Barb O'Bannon Great memories, thanks for sharing!
Congrats on also securing an X-Mid 2p! Now we share tents. :D been fantastic so far.
Thanks my friend; glad to hear you're still liking you X-Mid!
I drove thru once!
I'm from Virginia and Baltimore
I thought it would be like along I-81 on route 11
Boy did I find out what wilderness was the day I cut cross us 12
Scary to city boy like me.
I was all alone .
Scary!
Cool video tho.
I came out onto us 13 by cottonwood
Definitely! When I mentioned that the drive to the TH was an adventure, I also had in mind the magnificent drive along the Lochsa river on Hi 12. Thanks!
Awesome trip!...good mix of tunes as well.
Thanks! Was hoping people would enjoy the tunes vs being annoyed. 😎😅
Hey Dan, great to see the video come out! Its done so well it almost feels like I was there on the Selway River trip , too! Ha, maybe I was there and ran into you on the trail - now you know you're famous! Yeah, this is Fred from Missoula. Kidding aside, this is a really great video that captures the essence of the lower Selway. Great job with the camera work, the music, and I especially liked the wrap-up at the end. Each video tends to improve upon the last one, and I enjoy the story you tell with it. I will also be able to look back at it in the future several times when reminiscing about my own trip, so thanks for that. BTW, I ended up having a great 1st and 3rd nights camping at that Dry Bar place I mentioned, which seems about exactly halfway. Upon Bill's recommendation, I spent night 2 at the far south end of the airstrip up above the river and amongst the deer and elk. No fair, I didn't get to see any pack goats! Great place for a spring hike! Awesome job Dan!
Hey Fred! So glad you liked the video and commented. I was hoping you would so I could say again how nice it was to meet you out there on the trail! Thanks for the tip on the Dry Bar too, as I'm pretty sure I'll be doing this hike again in the future. Although, given what you shared with me, I might have to check out the western end of the Main Salmon next spring. I'm also wanting to do the whole trail from Paradise . . . and/or wondering what it would be like to do Paradise to Moose Creek, then follow Moose Creek north, maybe all the way to Hi 12. So much wilderness to explore!! Happy Trails and thanks for the kind words.
Great to see your hiking season has started, and along the Selway no less! The Selway is on my "must fish" list for this summer. Especially enjoyed the Moose Creek backcountry airstrip segment! How do you rate the Pinnacle Foods meals?
No doubt as a pilot, you were eyeing that grass field and saying, "I could do that!" Funny you should ask about the Pinnacle Foods because I recorded a review during this trip, which will be my next post! Short answer, the Tuscan Chicken rated in the category of "I'd gladly eat this at home!"
@@ShastaBubba Looking forward to the Pinnacle Foods review and sampling their fare. I'm always interested in trying out new backpacking meals and adding them to my pantry. Again, thanks for all the great scenery along the Selway.
