Honestly, I feel like SNK'S HD Spritework for XII and XIII is visually *still* the most impressive thing in Fighting Games. Yes, ArcSys' models in GG and DBFZ are freaking stunning, but I feel like the spritework of KOF XII and XIII is...pretty much timeless.
DBFZ uses GG uses 2.5D and DBFZ uses full 3D models, SNK was the sprite king and will ever be, i just hope KoF XV goes back to HD Sprites bc 95% of those new desings and sprites used to be the best out there, most of the new desings didnt translated well to 3d so i hope they go back

Neo Geo cabinets were more affordable in poorer countries. Most of the Neo Geo cabinets had multiple games you can choose from and also easy to emulate. Capcom cabinets were harder to hack/emulate. So, basically, economic reasons.
I miss the older sprites. Most of the HD sprites in that game just lacked the character Older KOF games had. Ralph and Clark were extra bulky for no reason, Mature and Vice had boring costumes in comparison to their original and some female characters like Yuri and Mai suffered from having big ass heads and round chibi faces. This is just personal opinion though...some looked great like K', Iori and a few others who maintained their character and design in this transition really well. I think a couple things that bothered me the most is how KOF 13, along with almost all fighting games of this gen, dumb down the variety of special moves and the duration and flashyness of super moves/neo maxes etc to cater to the ever growing e sports scene. Characters in KOF 14 no longer have unique pre fight character interactions/dialogue (arcade/story mode does not count), and KOF 13 didn't have them at all. And RIP to KOF 94-2003 Leona's beautiful back walking animation which boasted great pacing and timing to give her that floating bouncing feeling as if she ware carefree and confidently just galloping backwards enticing her opponent to come at her...along with her full flowing and bouncing pony tail with every step while there was enough attention to detail for her to hold back her undulating pony tail to keep it from blowing in her face. Tears roll down my face when i see town from 13 and on her back walk is simply just...her forward walk...But in reverse... Don't get me wrong I absolutely love all KOF fighting games (excluding KOF 12...but we won't speak of that mistake of a prototype)..but I just wanted to make a rant about how lazy I think many some fighting games are getting with their animations these days and letting physics handle most of the work
Seriously. XIV's models just look cheap. I'd rather they just recycled XIII's art and graphics...and engine... ...just re-release XIII with GOOD online pls, SNK.
Watching Max's sneak-peek video, and hallelujah, the pants are back! I cannot wait to play Kim again! Maybe not *as* fluid as 13, but a *much* better look than 14's.
Oh shit AirLancer, I played with you at EVO 2012 I believe. Whichever was the EVO where they first did KOF (thus making it the first EVO I actually cared about). Pretty sure that was the one, only other majors I went to during KOF13's heyday was Final Round and whichever was that one that was in Raleigh, NC. Good to see you still out there preaching the good word. 13 is the last fighter I feel like I was able to really get into, nothing these days does it for me at all.
It's not that it was any good in the transition from SF3 to SF4 in the Capcom side. Those things always happen and it's inevitable. They were progressively enhancing their 2D art skills and keeping up with the technology during the whole 90's, so of course both companies would end up with amazing stuff by the late 90's (SF3 and KOF2000-Garou). Things that you don't easily replace with 3d graphics.

Yeah Ducky, the transition was pretty tough to endure, thankfully with KOF XV they learned their lesson so it's much better than KOF XIV. I would love a new KOF with 2D artwork but there aren't many games that still do 2D nowadays so I know it's asking a bit too much. Smash and Tekken are pretty cool it's good too btw!

Well they're cheap but not all of them ar hard (Orochi, Zero and Verse might be the easiest of them all), I mean that Saiki and Dark Ash were needlessly difficult and almost made me abbandon the game

Did anyone watch the Killer Instinct documentary? Ken Loeb, lead designer of the game, said explicitly that KIM KAPHWAN was an inspiration to the creation of the game, especially the Ho-Ou-Kyaku special move, that gave the idea of performing looking combos against an opponent and countering them with a C-C-C-Combo Breaker.... To think that SNK was an inspiration to game designers to this extent is an amazing thing...

I've never been a fighting game player because I suck at it. The only fighting games I knew were Street fighters, Tekken, Dead or alive and Soul Calibur. Then I once heard of "Tame a bad boy" learned it was from KOF and the theme of Kim's team. I was curious and watched a combo video of Kim from KOF XIII and one of the first thing I noticed was the pants ... It was years ago and although I never played KOF, I love Kim, he's my favourite character just for his pants. True story.

I've never been a fighting game player because I suck at it. The only fighting games I knew were Street fighters, Tekken, Dead or alive and Soul Calibur. Then I once heard of "Tame a bad boy" learned it was from KOF and the theme of Kim's team. I was curious and watched a combo video of Kim from KOF XIII and one of the first thing I noticed was the pants ...
It was years ago and although I never played KOF, I love Kim, he's my favourite character just for his pants. True story.
