  • Zanzibar -- The Dark Side of Paradise is a twenty minute news documentary which looks at the causes and consequences of the longest blackout in history. The film assesses how unremitting power problems in the Spice Islands are putting their fragile economy at great risk, whilst also denying their impoverished population a safe water supply. It also provides a background of Zanzibar's current political situation and their dependence on tourism in order to illustrate why the power cuts are only serving to aggravate an already dire situation.

Intrigued why the music used on the soundtrack was chosen - it is not Zanzibari or even East African - it is Ali Farka Toure, the famous singer/guitarist from Mali. Much as I love his West African blues why not Zanzibari Taarab? I lived in Zanzibar for many years and don't recall ever hearing Ali Farka's music there. If the purpose of this video is to tell people how Zanzibar doesn't get a fair share, then this video os yet another example!

That happens so much when it comes to Africa. Even well meaning and well researched documentary work like this will just put some drums from somewhere and music from somewhere else and leave it at that. Imagine doing a documentary on Sicily and playing Irish music in the background.

To my understanding the answer of this main problem now is the electricity and the poverty and unemployment. This can be resolved by refurbishing Zanzibar, that is put the maximum solar panel throughout the island and try to attract the tourist. this process need a lot of investment for that we need to attract the international investors. once the investors are getting the profit and reinvesting the profit in the same Island I am sure within 3-4 years economy will come up. There are so many example, one is Pakistan. the country of Pakistan was down because of terrorism and poverty but after the international cricketer Imran Khan became the prime minister of Pakistan, it is developing now. As well as the Indian politician and the actor Mr Prakash Raj is refurbishing some villages and schools at Karnataka and tamilnadu he is having lot of potential to do that. if the Zanzibar government is discussing with this people they can give better idea how to improve the island in the short future all the best god bless you. moreover allow the Christian missions to come up in Zanzibar they will take the Zanzibar to the next level.
