    I think Portia loves her daughters, but she’s very much a realist and a woman of her time. She prioritises finding suitable matches for her daughters because she understands that for most women of the ton, that’s the only way to guarantee a somewhat happy life.
    She’s sort of the antithesis to Violet because the idea of a true love match is foreign to her, but I do believe that she’s happy Pen was able to find what neither her nor her other daughters were able to.

      Absolutely. I think making her the antithesis of Violet was entirely on purpose by the author. There are different kinds of love, and in this case, one is a more controlling type, where she thinks there's only one way to safety and happiness, a good match.

    • @em8066
      @em8066 4 месяца назад +8

      I liked this exchange because of Cressida's ignorance about Pen being LW, and Eloise having to go along with it. Cressida did take a big, society-defying risk by claiming to be LW, but she didn't actually make something of herself. She just took credit for Pen's work. Cressida has good reason to be angry with Eloise after being ignored and mocked by her, but that jab was too far. Ironically, Eloise finds herself fighting the urge to defend Pen and what Pen made of herself - something Eloise would have laughed at up to now. It doesn't mean anyone is right (about Eloise being jealous or about LW being a virtuous accomplishment), but it does serve a purpose in reconnecting Eloise with Pen. I only wish Eloise had been called out for not listening or paying attention to those close to her, not just for being vocal about her beliefs.

    10:33 I think it's not just about her pride. Pen managed to make a name for herself, that too at a time like that. And all of a sudden someone else snatched away the very identity that she worked so hard for, and now she has to choose between Whistledown or Colin. It's kind of like in modern day, what we call it, the "You have to give up your career after marriage". It's not a simple situation with this or that. Neither option lead to true happiness for Pen.

    I get why Pen wouldn't want to give up Whistledown tbh, for that time period when women essentially weren't expected or really allowed to work, she's basically a self made millionaire. Also she never had any power in society, she was a "wallflower" so I reckon it'd be tough to let that go.

    In the book, Colin discovers Penelope in the same way: he followed her in his carriage one afternoon when he saw her leaving in a hackney carriage. At that moment Cressida was trying to impersonate Lady Whistledown and Penelope couldn't stand it because it is her career, her life's work and the last thing she wanted was for something so important to her to be stolen by someone she despised so much because of all the bullying that she did for years. That's why Penelope can't just forget about her business because it's her passion. When Colin followed her, Penelope was going to leave a writing discrediting Cressida completely just like in the show.

    The Montridge party is dedicated to Penelope, as if you’ve noticed, the decor is wallflowers. The central feature displays how a wallflower can bloom. Penelope doesn’t want to give up Whistledown, it is part of who she is. I’m glad you noticed the music! ( In episode 5, POV was played during the love scene, the lyrics suit the situation perfectly.) I don’t think Pen is jealous, she is angry, because the person who bullied her relentlessly is now taking credit for her writing ability and cleverness, and the paper which she has poured so much of herself into. I don’t think its so much about the Featheringtons, but rather, how Pen is reconcile her identity with her love for Colin. You are gonna love episode 7, because youll get an idea of how he can be blazing angry at Pen, but still love her.

    You guys need to remember women were powerless in those times. Being lady Whistledown was an amazing feat. Penelope is a powerful woman and everything she wrote weren't lies. Her gossip is legit. She should have told Colin but I understand her reasons. And she was very young when she started writing.

  • @SubKween
    @SubKween 4 месяца назад +15

    I don't think Lady Featherington is fake about her love for her daughters. Caring about standing and caring about your children are not mutually exclusive. You have to remember what time period they are in. They have no male relative to take care of them so marriage is essential.

  • @ivw685
    @ivw685 4 месяца назад +29

    Its not about pride so much as Pen has made a livelihood with the Whistledown column...its like if some hack claimed your body of written work, and your best friend is is telling you to take it on the chin and throw it all away. And Eloise is a self absorbed brat. Pen saved Colin from a loveless marriage with Marina and Eloise from being accused of being Whistledown by the queen...which would have ruined both Fran's and Hyancinth's prospects. Furthermore, what Pen wrote about Eloise didnt destroy her "virtue," so besides a little gossip and snide looks, no one is even talking about what was written about Eloise in Whistledown!
    And what Pen wrote about Colin earlier this season was true lol. Colin is just mad someone called him out!

    • @Pestopasta_
      @Pestopasta_ 4 месяца назад

      How about she stops being a coward and says it to his face? How are you going to apparently chat shit about someone you care about unprovoked. Eloise said let Cressida take the fall because Penelope already said she would give it up and she knew it would ruin Pen and Colin’s relationship if he found out so even though she didn’t want her friend with her brother she was still thinking about their relationship. In ‘saving Colin’ from marrying Marina, she simultaneously damned another young woman, her FAMILY mind you, to hell. The reason why you guys don’t realise the severity of that is because this show didn’t want to go ask dark as it was alluding to and made Phillip conveniently marry her. The reality is, Marina could have ended up in the streets maybe even having to resort to prostitution, she could have died. My lord, you guys who absolve Penelope of every wrongdoing when she’s done the most harm on the show are unbelievable.

    • @ivw685
      @ivw685 4 месяца назад +6

      @@Pestopasta_ in the show, Marina is conveniently married off and unharmed. In the show, Eloise is unharmed by her association with radical thinkers because of her family's good name and wealth. The Bridgertons also conveniently used gossip to save Daphne from Berbrooke in season 1. Lady Whistledown's comments about Colin didn't even hurt anything but his feelings, and that's because what she wrote was true!
      It's not about absolving Pen of any wrongdoing she's ever done... It's about the show showing us time and time again that gossip is a tool used in the ton to get things done and is a common and enjoyable pastime, and Pen just so happens to be the wielder of that tool.
      Even more so, the show is about multilayered characters who do both wrong and good for various intentions. I don't hate any character, but they ALL have room to grow, which is the point of character development! I most certainly don't hate Eloise, and I understand why she is so upset having discovered her best pal of years has hidden a secret and wrote a briefly damaging thing about her in a scandal sheet, BUT I also see that Eloise is very self absorbed and self righteous and willing to use LW's brand of power to "save" her family when she chooses to do so. So, I'm not condemning Pen for wanting to save her friends in the simplest way she knows how when she's gone through her life basically unheard and unseen, even by her best friend, it turns out. I'm not even going to condemn her for sometimes writing in anger or when her emotions are high or for making poor choices. ALL OF THEM HAVE.
      Remember Daphne basically assaulting Simon in season 1? Anthony LITERALLY nearly going through with marrying Kate's sister when he KNEW Edwina wasn't "the one"? Colin saying to his friends that he would never in his wildest fantasies court Penelope Featherington, potentially damaging her already scarce prospects within the marriage mart by seemingly insinuating that HE would never "stoop so low"? And yes, while Pen could have simply told Colin she was LW, why do you possibly think she would do that given her how she has been treated in the previous seasons, and against Colin's supposed desire to dance on the day of LW's demise, and amid the loss of best friend and Eloise's ongoing anger, and family that is basically tolerant of her at BEST, with no marriage prospects, and no real way to spend her money without suspicion? If we are speaking of what COULD have happened here, Pen would have been left alone and bereft in an isolated bubble (so she believes and is like likely given her family's weird standing). To think she would willingly put herself in that situation, to be unloved by and invisible to all she cares for, is absolutely laughable. She's also young in the story and quite simply hasn't learned enough to KNOW better or how to DO better yet. So I offer her grace, as I do all of these characters, in order to keep watching this show.
      Let's think critically about ALL of our characters and their motivations, and the fact that the ton, INCLUDING previously Eloise, all enjoy and use LW to their advantage until she turns her metaphorical sword their way.

      @@ivw685 I absolutely 100% agree with everything you said. I don't understand people in the comments being so judgmental towards Penelope when all the other characters in the show are doing the things that she is reporting. People don't judge her when others use LW for their own benefits (Burbrook, Cressida etc.) But when Pen use it for herself they complain. I understand why she had to out Marina. She had tried to talk to Porsche, was ignored, to Marina, was ridiculed for loving Colin and stood her ground about trapping him. She even tried to warn Colin that Marina loved someone else without telling him about the pregnancy, but even he didn't listen. So when she discovered that they were going to elope that morning, she had no other choice but to use LW. No one listened to her but everyone listens to LW. And it didn't distroy Marina. She got a better deal than she would have gotten with Colin. She clearly didn't love him she only wanted security for herself and her children. She got more than that she got a large estate, a young handsome husband with a title who knows about the pregnancy and wants her to give his brother's children the home and life they would have had if his brother George had not been killed in war. When Colin came to see her in season 2 she told him basically to get a life. She also told him to seek out Penelope. She knew that Penelope loves Colin and would be good for him. I believe she knew Penelope was LW because nobody but the Featheringtons knew she was pregnant and only Penelope had objections.
      Penelope is condemned for using LW for saving her friends. She never lied in LW.
      Also, having the dueling Whistledowns, Cressida's against Penelope's, shows the difference between a great gossip writer and a vindictive wanna be. I'm sure that the ton noticed the difference and appreciated the true Whistledown.

    Concidering that Pen is the narrator of the show thus far, and the Featheringtons were introduced along with the Bridgertons even in the very first scene of the whole show, I think it was to be expected that the Featheringtons would have a large role in the season where Pen is the female lead. I think the season is kinda split in that the first 4 episodes showed more of Colin's pov while these last 4 lean heavily towards Pen. Which one would guess honestly, she IS Lady Whistledown.

    I don’t know if someone beat me to it, but I’m glad they finally showed a reading of the banns. It’s normal in their day to get married a month after you announce it. The church will announce the banns like the minister did once a week, and make sure there’s no reason they can’t marry. It gives them time to come forward too if they hear about it late. It will go in the paper too, but not everyone can read. If one marries by special license, no banns are needed, but it’s expensive. One might do that to hide an illegitimate child or avoid family rejection. It’s technically not always scandalous, but it could be. There is also the town of Gretna Green, Scotland, which exists right over the border with England. No banns are needed in Scotland, so if you were avoiding family completely and don’t have the money for a license, off to Gretna you go. A Vegas of their time. It even shows up in Downton Abbey, which takes place 90-100 years later. Book wise, this is the early 1820s. Downton takes place from 1911-1928, so far.

    I agree so much with all of you guys critiques on this season, specially that even though the show is called Bridgerton and Colin is supposed to be as much of a protagonist as Penelope they have him on the background and he's much more just a love interest than a protagonist, which is a disservice to both the actor and the character

    I agreed that the 2nd part was more about Lady Whistledown and Penelope's journey then Polin- it was too unbalanced...I wanted to see more of Colin and his struggles and his pursuit of his writing. The book excels I this way....I also feel like the split into two parts made it more unbalanced.

  • @MurielPeck

    Penelope told Eloise that she's going to tell Colin once she published the column discrediting Cressida. She can't stop at that time because she knew that Cressida would ruin her column with lies and if it was learned later that Penelope was LW no one would believe that the lies wasn't from Penelope
    Also, to allow your bully to take your successful business is like someone who hates you take your RUclips Channel that has 5k subscribers and trashing it. You wouldn't want that, but Penelope only stopped because of Eloise and mostly for Colin.

  • @TaylorWhite

    To me, Eloise and Cressida’s relationship ending just furthers my own opinion that Eloise was never a good friend, not to Penelope nor anyone else. We see Cressida try to talk to Eloise about her parents forcing her to marry an elderly man and wanting to get out of it. Eloise preaches feminism and going against society, but the moment a friend comes to her in a truly awful situation she’s all 🤷🏻‍♀️ about it. She offers no real help, has no sympathy for her, and ignores her during some of the conversations Cressida starts about it. She doesn’t even listen to the reasons why Cressida is claiming to be LW, she just immediately thinks Cressida awful and ends their friendship without any empathy towards her situation. It’s exactly like how she reacted when she learned Pen was LW. and even Cressida mirrors what Pen said to Eloise, that she’s jealous. And she definitely is.
    With the redemption they gave Cressida in the first half of the season, I was really sad to see they vilified her here, I was really hoping she’d get to get away from her family by marrying debling but they had him disappear

    Zuff is right. This season isn’t about the romance. Colin felt like an afterthought in his own supposed season. Unfortunately with the new showrunner I think that’s what future seasons will also be like. More the drama, less the romance which is extremely disappointing

    im convinced the writers lowkey hate Penelope.. everything they needed to write her story was in the book but they took it and twisted it around throughout the show and made a huge mess of it. giving Cressida her sympathetic B-plot DURING PENELOPES SEASON?? Crazy choice to make. It makes it harder for the audience to understand Pen's frustration at Cressida, of all people, taking credit for her work. They also basically copy & pasted Colin's story onto Eloise in S2 for some reason.. even though they KNEW they'd be doing Colin & Pen in S3 which also makes it harder to understand why penelope would continue to lie to Colin despite Eloise already knowing & them literally being engaged. In the book he finds out BEFORE theyre engaged.

    One of the biggest problems with this season is that they split it up into two different groups. It didn’t work for me. Instead of a constant story it changed the dynamics of the story. I hope they don’t do that again next season. I went back and watched the whole season from start to finish and it was so much better to watch.
