    I always thought Star Fox: Assault was such an underrated game. I played it so much. Probably still my favorite in the franchise. The multiplayer was ridiculously fun.

      You and me both. I always played it with my 3 younger brothers when we had nothing better to, plus I had single-handedly [nearly] unlocked everything in the game (I was missing one weapon in the entire game and a bonus game which I am still trying to unlock once my mother sends me the GameCube and figures out where she put my copy of SF: Assault. I'm hoping it didn't get lost when she moved).

      It was pretty sub-par. The in foot missions were pretty bad. Fox moves way too fast and the whole game just felt too arcadey for a home console. I have no idea why there was not a Star Fox game for the Wii though... wtf....

  • @seannapier2298

    Well done. I believe Nintendo's main problem with starfox is the same problem that sega is having with sonic: They just can't stick to one style of play that people want and try to shove gimmicks down our throats instead of just giving us a decent game overall without gimmicky controls, confusing gameplay choices and unable to move the series forward without having to rehash the older games.

    • @seannapier2298
      @seannapier2298 7 лет назад +13

      I agree. I believe Zero had a lot of potential to be a fantastic game for the wii u, yet as I mentioned, all that potential was bogged down thanks to the horrid motion controls and yet another rehash of 64's story.

    • @sungleong
      @sungleong 6 лет назад +1

      totally agree with you! why can't they just stick to original format?? Why the Fuck do they have to force the gimmicky gameplay on us??

    • @sleeplezznightz
      @sleeplezznightz 5 лет назад +4

      True. Japanese game makers are very hard headed - they should have paid Argonaut more and let them drive their ideas. Same with Sonic, Sega had someone who had the formula to make Sonic a winner but the Execs refused to listen to him. It may be a cultural issue. Japanese game makers don't want to cater to the American market, they seem to expect the American market to do as they are told, and that style doesn't work very well outside of Japan.

    I really do love the Star Fox series and wish it was more successful.
    Personally Assault is my favourite and I didn't mind the on foot parts and loved multiplayer. I also enjoyed Zero as well, but I do think the controls are flawed. Coming back to it after awhile feels a bit awkward and it takes a bit to get used to the controls once more.

    As a Star Fox fan I think a lot of the problems relating to newer released games sales is due to misconception of what the actual fan base is. It is a theory and not sure if it can be fully proven due to how difficult it would be to prove. It isn't meant to insult anyone.
    A lot of the people who were original fans of Star Fox on Snes and N64 have left the series. Lack of extra feature/accessory type thing, general loss of interest, constantly changing gameplay styles and finally the ageing of the original gameplay style being contributing factors. A lot of the current and more devoted series fans were actually introduced via Star Fox Adventures and stuck around after Assault.
    Now I know a lot will see that as being impossible but this is where the misconception part comes in.
    Over the years a number of very vocal remaining original fans of the series put forth their view N64 game play style as being the law for a Star Fox game to be a Star Fox game. To put it simply. This meant they could hate and reject the rest of the series but still call themselves Star Fox fans. As this has happened over a number of years people take this as being the norm for a Star Fox fan. Because that is considered normal for Star Fox fan when it came to making the series popular again Nintendo looked towards those fans. Which basically means they appealed towards only a small portion of the current series fans.
    There is also the Krystal fan factor as well. That can be a much more sensitive topic. Even more so because of Nintendo's actions towards the series so I won't go into it.

    • @SaltedMallows
      @SaltedMallows 6 лет назад +1

      Angel Fox
      I absolutely agree, I was introduced to Starfox with adventures. I knew about the other games and with the story interactions between characters of adventures I assumed Starfox was more story driven as a whole but the rest of the series isn't very story heavy.
      I enjoyed the single player adventure aspect and combat as well as delving into the world of Sauria and all this weird archaic krazoa spirit stuff we never see again save for a minor map cameo in assault. I've been waiting for Nintendo to return and try the adventure formula again as I found Krystal's dinosaur planet background and motivations interesting as well as the villains like general scales despite his climax going flaccid and jumping straight to andross.
      It's like the game just remembered oh wait, we have to finish this off like an OG Starfox game time 4 a space battle with andross !

      wtf but I just played 64 today
      I just want another arcade-style on-rails shooter without any gimmicks man. It fucking hurts that the only time Star Fox is relevant is Smash Brothers Melee memes.

      For its time, having Star Fox 64 and using a joystick with a trigger to fire was super engrossing. Now-a-days Star Fox just doesn’t have the same feeling of being completely engrossing and I think Nintendo keep trying to do that to new players, when they should just focus on making a good game instead of a game to test our new hardware

    • @capedluna

      This is pretty true, I played Adventures first and went back to play 64 maybe a couple months later. I like both maybe a mash like Assault. Much like Sonic no matter how much he tries to do his fans will harm more than help him unless he is in pixel form.

    I think a good direction for the game would be to let you fly around the Lylat system in an open world. It doesn't necessarily have to be huge but I'd like to fly between planets and fight off Andross' army on each. Maybe you get alerts when there are attacks and you get money for helping which you can use to upgrade your Arwing.
    Anyway, loved the video and the effort you put into it!

      Why Starfox is failing, in 2002 Adventures sold to a crowd that was all hype on 1993 and 1997 Starfox. they wanted something familiar with what they grew on. Now You've made Starfox 0 aiming for the Audience that just doesn't really care for games as much anymore. the Best choice is to Remake assault and Adventures. the Current Generation of Nintendo fans Starfox wise grew up on Assault/Adventures. Think Hard and keep trying.

    Please tell that you are planning a Golden Sun status report...?

  • @azurabayta133

    It's such a shame how much Star Fox has suffered over the last twenty years due to its mismanagement. Star Fox 2 should never have been canceled, mutating Dinosaur Planet into something it was fundamentally incompatible with was a shit-head move, Assault felt half-assed and incomplete, Command took bad controls and mixed them with all the least fun aspects of Star Fox 2, and Zero (which I have not played, so I'm going by things I've heard elsewhere here) spent half of its time shoving motion controls in your face while spending the other half of its time reminding you that 64 exists.
    If Nintendo wants to make another Star Fox game, then they need to stop, sit down, and rethink everything. And that's... difficult. I don't know what the series needs. How should a Star Fox game play? The assumption seems to be that it is a rail-shooter at its core, but Star Fox 2 has effectively no on-rail sections to speak of and it's a fan favorite. How should the balance between story and gameplay be? Should there be more focus on plot, complex character development, and world-building? Who is the series FOR? Nintendo seems to have been marketing it toward kids and teens, but the popularity of stuff like "A Fox in Space" suggests the fan-base is older than that.
    Star Fox is in crisis, and it's essentially on life-support now if not straight-up dead. It needs major retooling if it's ever going to be relevant again.

  • @xRocketzFighterx
    @xRocketzFighterx 6 лет назад +40

    It's because starfox's legacy has now become very dated and unimpressive to modern gamers.
    Starfox is still popular to fans and non fans with the series being one of the most fan creations created (mostly by furries)
    Nintendo, Platnium games also im gonna bring out Koei Tecmo (for zelda) is that these two third party companies and nintendo are just too stuck in the past and like to reboot the stories again or reference the past alot.
    This is why I still defend and say that Starfox Assault is the best entry in the series because it continues the story, I actually liked the long missions though I admit they are very clunky and not aged well. It's still a game that tried to do something new and to me it suits my fancy.
    Starfox adventures imo is a charming game but i wouldn't care if it didn't exist because ever since i was a kid I did love this game but when I already knew in magazines that this game and by fan articles that this is built from Dinosaur Planet with starfox branding slapped on just to sell copies felt very disrespectful to everyone at RARE and from what I heard from another source is that alot of RARE employees who worked on this game hated turning this into a starfox game because these guys wanted to create more original games and not just keep on clinging onto Nintendo brand names all the time.
    To this day I still like the starfox franchise I've played and owned all of these games except command I sold that after a few playthroughs because it's crap (I'm sorry boys but that game pissed me off) I still have fun with the snes games, the n64 entry, those wierd entries on the gamecube and I had some enjoyment with Zero.
    If zero was advertised as casual friendly with normal controls like the previous games, also don't reboot the whole story again and if it wasn't on the WiiU then Zero would've sold better.
    I still think that Nintendo should port everysingle WiiU game to the Switch since the WiiU is a sunken ship.

    i really liked assault. i think most starfox games after that have been fun and enjoyable. i haven't played command but it looks fun with all the multiple open endings. starfox 64 3ds was a great throwback and starfox zero is very fun to play althought it takes some time to get used to the controls. but after that it's a blast.
    The main problem i think it's that the series has become so stale, the story has pretty much stayed the same since 64. I really liked assault for that part bcus it progressed some characters further. Then there's almost no promotion for starfox at all, at least from what i know which is not much. It seems to me like starfox games just happen then fade away and there's no incentive to build a fanbase again that wants those games. That mini series that was made for starfox zero was amazing and i think nintendo should have continued it to promote the series again. those are my thoughts on why it's so obscoure currently... sad bcus i rly like star fox :(

  • @ThrillingDuck
    @ThrillingDuck 5 лет назад +2

    WOW Zero sold less than Command? THAT is impressive lol. I've always been a big fan of this franchise but it's not purely the space shooter aspect that I like - it's the characters and universe too. I've enjoyed every entry from 64 to Command (yes, even Command and Adventures) but I didn't even give Zero a chance. But honestly the reason I didn't give Zero a chance wasn't because of the controls or reviews, it was because they were rehashing the fucking Lylat Wars yet AGAIN. As soon as the reveal trailer made it clear it was yet another reimagining of 64 (and by extension the SNES original) all my hype for Zero deflated instantly.
    I love this series and want more new stories set within it. The Star Fox content in Starlink was enough to push me from passive background interest in the game to pre-ordering it just because it's actually a new adventure for Fox and his team. I only hope that if this franchise gets another shot at its own game they push forward from a story standpoint.

    StarFox Adventures was originally Dinosaur Planet that had nothing to do with the StarFox series.
    It was meant to be RARE's attempt for a Zelda Ocarina of Time game but with their own RARE personality.
    Sadly Miyamoto got involved saying that the main character Sabre looked like Fox McCloud.
    They ripped most of the story out of the game except for Krystal's version of events that were about as close to the original Dinosaur Planet that remained in the game.
    While I loved Krystal's redesign in the GameCube version from the N64 original design.
    However as long as you understand it was never meant to be a StarFox game, you can still enjoy StarFox Adventures being as it was the last ever RARE game for a Nintendo console as Microsoft brought RARE during the final few months of the Game's Development.

    I love the StarFox series so much to the extent that it is my favourite Nintendo franchise and universe! I was born in October of 1996 so I was introduced to Fox and the gang in Smash Bros Melee, which then lead me to get: Adventures, Assault then later Command etc. It wasn't until StarFox 64 3D until I was actually introduced to the considered build and "gameplay law" of StarFox.
    What I want personally, is a game that focuses on all the gameplay styles, similar to Assault! This way will (hopefully) please all of the fan base because they will be addressing each favourite style. I like Fox as an elite mercenary working ground based missions, it's cool! It adds more to the character making him more of this elite individual he is. I'd be a upset if they were to isolate him to just the cockpit but don't get me wrong!! I enjoy the Arwing space shooter gameplay too.
    If they were to put the same budget, time and effort into the next StarFox game similar to that of LoZ: Breath of the Wild, I really think they could have something special!

    Star Fox Zero was amazing for me, but the controls were to much complicated for casual gamers (and even many hardcore gamers), and that is far from what Nintendo usually tries to accomplish. Really hope that we see a new Star Fox on the switch . . .

    It's such a bummer that Zero didn't sell as well as the other games in the series. it may not have been thier most enjoyable game to play, but it certainly wasn't the worst. The motion controls in Zero seemed more daunting than they really were. It really didn't take long to have a firm grasp of the controls. It's just a shame.
    Great job on this informative video.

    So to sort of counter you a little...
    -Adventures isn't a spinoff title, it's actually part of the mainline series. This is because the Japanese copies of the game included a comic in the case that had a plot that took place a few years after the events of 64, then leads to the start of Adventures. Why this comic was never included in US and EU copies is a mystery, but you can easily find it to read. Regardless it's part of the mainline titles. A spinoff would be like Guard or some dating sim featuring Krystal, Katt, and the other girls.
    -The on foot combat was actually in 64, the thing is virtually every player didnt know this as the requirement for getting it was ridiculous (both needing to unlock Expert which required getting all medals, then getting a medal on Venom in Expert)
    --The on foot was strictly for multiplayer, but my guess is even if say someone did get it, nobody really used it as they neither used the landmaster (maps were more tailor made for the arwing)
    -Zero isnt a reboot no matter how hard some may try to say, it's a remake of 64. It's gotten to the point where the reboot term has become a near buzzword

      Now that you mentioned about Adventures I have to add I've heard a few label Command as the odd one out instead of Adventures. The tone and style of the game is very different to the rest of the series. Certain things that occur throughout rest of the series isn't in Command. But a lot of how you define the series can really change what is more Star Fox like or not. Official labels remain unchanged no matter what our views on it are. Like the official label for Star Fox Zero is a reimagining of the N64 game. Only a few call it that because it really don't describe what it is.

    Awesome video! I really hope Nintendo will make another Star Fox game in the future, it's always been one of my favourite Nintendo games. I liked Zero, even with it's controls, but I would be the first to admit that they were not the right thing to do. You shouldn't have to get used to controls, or feel uncomfortable playing in any way, it should always feel natural right from the moment you pick up the controller, which Zero failed to do. I would bet that if they re-released Zero again for the Switch, and ditched the Wii U's control scheme, it would probably end up being one of the best selling games in the franchise. Here's hoping Star Fox will make a triumphant return.

    Nintendo: What do fans want from the star fox series?
    Fans: Basically star fox 64 with updated grafics, and a new story. No new gimmicks. No open world missions. Just fly, shoot, discover new paths.
    Nintendo: Ok, let's do all of that...Except let's also add a bunch of extra "content" to make the gsme better. And changed how to control the game. And change the fun. And ruin it.

    While the titanic drop in sales for the series after 64 was mostly justified, Command was an amazing game that should have sold way more considering the DS was the highest selling system of all time. Only real issue imo is that the story went a lot of ridiculous places, mostly with Krystal, but the idea of 9 different endings and branching story was executed really well.

    I'm surprised no one is talking about Starfield: Battle for Atlas. I actually thought that was actually a pretty fun Star Fox game. The idea of an All Range Mode that you can freely move from planet to planet, along with an upgrade system that allowed you to make your ship more powerful as you progressed, was something that I always wanted in the Star Fox franchise. It was something unexpected coming from a developer company like Ubisoft.

    Honestly, the Star fox games have been very unlucky lately, the gamecube didn't sell well at all so the two Star fox games for that console would sell less by default, the ds one isn't that good and is in a hand held console and even though the ds sold well a Star fox game in a hand held console is not optimal, the 3ds one sold better probably because, a) is a decent game and b) it's called Star fox 64 3d (emphasis on the "64") and for Zero i think the main reasons for its failure the really poor sales of the wii u and obligatory motion controls (i still love Zero tho).

  • @Kiyosuki
    @Kiyosuki 7 лет назад +1

    There's been a lot of videos analyzing Star Fox's overall validity as a series lately because of Zero, and it's unfortunate cause I kinda feel like Miyamoto here. I really like this series and kind of wish it were more popular than it is, some of the interpretations from fans like the Fox in Space short or that old, surprisingly good Nintendo Power comic of it from way back that was a little grittier all kinda make me love what this series' universe could be.
    ...but at the same time a lot of said videos like this have sort of really laid out how turbulent this series has been since even it's earliest years. Another video kind of put it best, the series is marred with installments that were ruined by gameplay features that had no business being there other than to sell a function. Command could have been one of the gems of the series if it weren't for the intrusive Stylus controls forced on players during flight sim parts. Zero was sort of screwed unfortunately, because they released it on the Wii-U right during it's death (which makes Reggie's "huh? how'd it fail *shrug* " comment almost infuriating. lol), but it wasn't helped critically by the intrusive touchscreen pad functions forced on players.
    Some games like Assault, which I kind of unironically love but at the end of the day...was just victimized by some really bizarre decisions in design and linearity (really though, Assault should have and could have been the best.), and Star Fox Adventures being another game forced to be a Star Fox game...are more just critical flops due to in-game issues, and the series is unfortunately always going to be niche I think, but overall I think a big problem is Nintendo has to stop treating the series like a platform to show off or test hardware functions even at the cost of an individual games' gameplay coherancy.
    Unfortunately now, we have a series that is so turbulent and pulled in so many directions that I don't think anyone has ever really felt like the series had a chance to find it's "default" stride. Zelda is at its default, an adventure rpg. Mario for all its spinoffs, has its default as a platformer. You'd think Star Fox's "default" would be "flight simulator", but given how spotty the series has been that's actually debatable now.
    Playing a bit of the previously cancelled, and only recently officially released Star Fox 2, and seeing just how much individual parts of it were cannibalized by later games, it kind of sums it up for me. SF2 is a really strong game because all was the sum of all those parts, that sum being a strong space shooter and it kind of makes me wonder what could have been if the series had gone more in this direction of sticking to a stronger bottom line more often.

    Starfox is one of those franchises I desperately want to see resurge. Start the story off from 64 and really expand the lore! Starlink Battle for Atlas would be a fantastic way to go with this franchise. In addition, I bet a Star Fox cartoon would really drum up some appeal to the younger audience.

  • @gavind1363
    @gavind1363 6 лет назад

    What I think has held the series up is how Nintendo has ran Star Fox almost like a tech demo, emphasising the new hardware more than anything. I think 64 did so well because A) it was coming off of the original which sold well and B) it only had the Rumble Pack to play with, meaning more time was put into the core and basics of the gameplay. I may be completely wrong, but it makes sense to me.

    I do hope when Nintendo does make a new Star Fox game they can recenter their focus and make the game great because of it. With Metroid Samus Returns being released they have shown that they can bring a series back to its former glory even if it's been over a decade since the last noteworthy title. I think all they really need to do is give the game a more intuitive control scheme with gameplay and mechanics that would better fit a fast past arcade style game. They could also make taking alternate routes more interesting by giving the player a different final boss and ending depending on their route similar to Contra Hard Corps. With that they could maybe even through in a few joke secret endings like the black hole level from the first game.

    Great video!!! I think Nintendo should start looking a bit more to the west. Like they did with Zelda. Starlink is a good example, I'm very excited to try that game using Fox McCloud...they should do something similar but just with the Starfox crew. I'd add some on foot and land sections/missions like how the exploration worked in Mass Effect 1 (but withput the empty and boring stuff of course).

    • @roguesquadron521
      @roguesquadron521 5 лет назад

      Hmm...I'd love a Mass Effect-style Star Fox game if they ever consider having story play a bigger role. Imagine exploring inside the Great Fox or visiting Corneria/Katina/other populated planets, interacting with the crew and building stronger relationships with them, recruiting new team members (bring back Krystal, Nintendo!), upgrading your gear/skills/tech/etc. Of course keep the same style of Arwing gameplay that we love but go the Assault route and include some Landmaster/on foot missions, just with better controls. If space epic is what they're going for, that would be a phenomenal route to take in my opinion (though the drama doesn't have to be as over the top/ridiculous as it was in Command. Ugh...).

  • @motorwayt-s628
    @motorwayt-s628 5 лет назад

    I think what they should try to do is bring everything that was good in all of the older games and put them together for the next one. From SNES there could be more creative level themes like the alternate dimension level. From 2 there could be the multiple character selection thing and slippy could use the walker (more on that in a bit). From 64 you could have the different paths and alternate exits and the simple controls. From Adventures Krystal and Dino planet could come back and have ground missions with smaller puzzles. Assault could have the team use guns, character interactions, multiplayer (with online) level design, and story. Most of the good stuff from command and Zero was already mentioned. The game should also be bigger and have plenty of content.
