    Ian,
I’ve played guitar for 35 years, never understood how chords and pentatonic scales went together, I just memorized songs. This video was the “Aha” moment when everything made sense! All of the sudden I’m soloing to comfortably numb, every note I hit sounded right no matter where I went because you explained the chord progression of D major and how we started on the 6th, and then we go to B and play in the minor position. I’m amazed, I thought none of this stuff was ever going to make sense. Thank you so very much for decoding this for me, the lights are finally on and I’m not lost on the fretboard!!!

StichMethod Guitar Ian, you cant imagine what this moment has meant to me. Literally the lights came on and I could see what I was doing. I already had the dexterity and speed in my fingers and knew the positions, so once the lights came on I went from beginner to really good in an instant! Again thank you so much I just can’t express how genuinely grateful I am. You made a huge impact in my life today on something I’ve worked so hard at to no avail since I was 10. I’m not a mushy guy, but this is one of the happiest days in my life. Thank You so much.

the stitch method is simply the best way of learning the fretboard, I think he takes all the useful points of of 30 plus years of playing and teaching them so you just don't learn licks or scales but real stuff you can apply.he doesn't show any filler lessons (endless sweep arpeggios, 8 finger tapping, etc)all that stuff is good but more of a trick, people want to be able to hum or keep up with the music even the solos, and he teaches just that,I watch all his videos because I know he will cover something I can utilize

StichMethod Guitar for sure man,I've been playing since 1987 started with metal method, then Berklee Books and DuMeolaS book on scales and arpeggios.i think one never stops learning, and you teach a no bullshit method that u can apply ASAP, KUDOS BRO

Oh by the way I maybye use 3 or 4 of AL Dimeola arpeggios,Doug marks stuff stuck with me due to being pentatonic and natural minor related.some ted greene and Eric johnson stuff, but I'm using your method pretty exclusively, probaly gonna shoe my students but needed to clear that with you first

I want to commend you on you approach that encapsulates sound theory and fretboard mastery ideas in a very casual (for lack of a better word), and understandable/relatable way. I’ve been watching quite a few videos on chord tone targeting lately and whilst I understand the concept for some reason your explanation just really resonated with me.
Dissecting an incredible song such as Comfortably Numb and finally having that ‘aha’ moment when you can hear that’s exactly whats happening in the solo’s and why the listener is drawn to it is such an eye opener.
Great video and really inspiring stuff!

So refreshing for someone to explain the theory behind the solo and chord progressions, rather than just chasing the frets around the neck calling out the fret numbers. But it’s up to us as guitarist learning to make sure we know the key, the notes on the neck and the patterns of the scales in five positions.... if learning guitar was that easy it wouldn’t be worth it. thanks a great lesson!

man i can't say it enough. your the best teacher i've seen or had. lots of times ive tried to learn something but i also want to learn so i can do stuff myself and make my own riffs and solos. the biggest question i usually have is....why. why did they do that why did he go there. and the answer usually when answered is because...or thats what he likes to do. this is the complete opposite of how i've been taught. everything makes sense and i feel like i could take this example and do something myself similar...and feel like i have a reason to try to bend different notes and why i would attempt that.all those teachers that were great and trying told me they were scale accidentals....there not there on purpose and for a reason....man ty and keep up the great work.

As others have commented, this section is in B minor. The tonality is all minor. The chords of the Bm scale are those ones listed in the video. Just starting at Bm, not D.

    • @Martin_Gregory
      @Martin_Gregory 7 лет назад

I think the point of difference here is that Key Signature is not the same as "What Key is the song in". The Key Signature tells you what choices you have. However, as you observe, the are two _keys_ for any key signature - even before we worry about accidentals. If you had said "this song has the key signature of D major" there would be no argument. However, the solo section is "IN" B minor. That's because the chord sequence and every melodic fragment resolves to B.
In fact, a common definition of "key" of music is "the chord sequence plus the tonic". Just knowing the chord sequence (or just knowing the key signature) doesn't tell you the key.
It's worth noting that (as with many things in music theory), there isn't complete consensus amongst musicians about this.
The top hit on the topic, "piano.com" offers a very simplistic definition of "key" that matches yours". Wikipedia offers a detailed treatment of the topic that matches mine.
Another poster said that if you walked into a rehearsal and said "let's play Comfortably Numb solo in D" you'd be laughed out. I thought so. But I googled "what key is Comfortably Numb solo in" and got a lot of hits on "D". I think this particular song confuses the issue more because the verses are in fact "in D" (in the sense of tonal centre - which for the definition I'm using is the same thing).

Great lesson. I wish PF had made the fading out portion of the ending Comfortably Numb lead somewhere. No one teaches that part. Everyone stops at the peak. Gilmour has never retained that feeling of the studio lead on any of his recorded live performances. Somewhere on a reel in storage is Gilmour continuing the jam.

More off-topic stuff on the entire song.... I know everyone knows this, but I managed to not know until rather late in life , but there was no internet when I was 15 and deep into my guitar magazines, etc, long long ago. OK...I digress. The track we all love...the story of how that came together, was put together (yes, normal to do, I know) but...a person who isn't in the band making that track work so well as he pieced it together....(I'm skipping technical recording, etc. terms...I'm just not trying atm b/c I'll sound as if I think I know or recall more than I do) ....so this man took the chunks of Comfortably Numb, which Waters & Gilmour were, of course, feuding over, mainly the whole...rhythm issue, if I recall. Anyway, to be able to take what was given to him by Waters and Gilmour, not only not wreck it but....likely make it better than anything Gilmour & Waters could have put together and agreed on (and AGREED on) ...especially at THAT time? Yeah. So...it impresses the hell out of me to hear any story of what's so common, wonderful production, etc. If I recall, there was no "ok see if they like this version" option (not that this wouldn't be a can of worms and slow a process that was already ...staring at the last minutes to get it finished) ...and provides the track that we all were so moved by we can recall where we were when we first heard it, it's so perfect.... the elements being argued over were smoothed out, rather literally...and...I'm rambling. It's impressive as hell, being able to take what was given to "him" (guy deserves the name, but ...google that yourself if you're interested, I forget atm, I'm OLD) ...anyway... thank God for the man that took the chunks of what would be Comfortably Numb, and produced the FINAL PRODUCT. No more changes from anyone, that was it. Could it be improved on? Would we want to dare let someone try? It was a bit "...ahh...I don't know about this" when we first heard/read the extended rather recent iteration even existed (I say rather recent, I'm old, I measure time in full decades) THIS: ruclips.net/video/YKiWpaMkU08/видео.html (think this clip should cover "he" (Ezrin) handling the multitracks handled by Michael Cayman piecing that track together, getting the mixture of bits from all over, ...just listen to it, it's short. Amazing when you think about it in terms of what could be lost or ....nearly ruined, or...made PERFECT, but...could it have been if handled any other way? Even if we take The Wall tension out of the equation.... I suppose I'm overthinking it a bit, after all, it's "fresh eyes times ten" , sort of. Amazing though, blows my mind. Imagine hearing your song "come back" to you, now complete, ...delivered to you, wonderful, and ....would be magical to pretty much any human being that has ever heard the song. From there the song just gives more and more,

Love the channel and thanks for the great lessons.
I’ve included a link to this video in the launch of the Guitarly app. on Android. Guitarly is a free, jamming app which gives a backing track and shows the chord, chord tones and scale notes as they change over an interactive fretboard. The track can be paused/skipped and the tempo, drum pattern and instruments can be changed to inspire your soloing.
We would love to feature your work but if you want this link removed (or would like to include links to other lessons) please let me know.
All the best and thanks for the great lessons.
    Paul

all pentatonic scales are generated from their relative major scales. no problem to mix both in a solo.

great comments on the song man! If I can add, I think it really helps to look into the mixolydian scales, which can be mixed with the pentatonics, and David uses it a lot. Its basically what you explained, since the notes you added are pretty much the notes of the mixolydian scale. Again, congrats for the video!
