Always a useful tip, but you have to be careful to not rub too hard or you'll remove clear coat and stain the paint with the marker. You can remove the foil off the wheels with isopropyl alcohol.
Great tip Mike. I find new hot wheels at goodwill and other thrift stores and they have a huge sticker on the card board, I found out that a hair dryer to heat up the price sticker makes them peel off easily, just wanted to share that tip I had learned :)
That is a great tip thank you , I don’t know why they can’t put that little sticker on the back of the package , ugh . Thanks so much for watching . Mike .
Most people think that tampos are decals but they are actually paint that are applied with etched plates much like a stamping process. The etchings in the plates are filled with paint. When more than one color are used on a single tampo, then more plates are needed to paint the tampo design. Most tampos don't have more than three colors.
Hey Mike. This is Drew, formally Drew's Custom Diecasts. Great how to on using the Dry Erasers. Seeing the results of the Matchbox car explains the issue I had, because that's what I tried it on. I was truly impressed on how good of a job it did on the art car. Looks like I'll have to revisit the markers in the future. Keep up the stellar videos and looking forward to seeing whatever you do next 🍻
Wow, that works so much better than isopropyl alcohol, which tends to dull the base coat. I guess that Matchbox Allante is gonna need a dip into Citris Strip and a new paint job, like matte black. Kidding. But thanks for the tip and showing the results. That red station wagon is totally transformed. Best to you and yours. 🤟🏼
Technically the graphics aren't decals - they are printed onto the body via tampo printing. One color per plate, plate gets inked and pressed onto the stamp called a teet and the rubber teet prints the color onto the car. Nail polish remover - acetone will knock them off with no effort at all. 👀
@@diecast_MikeEspo Good point Mike! Acetone IS pretty brutal so one must be careful - I used a toothpick with dab of acetone to carefully pick off parts of tampos in door cracks etc - but yeah you can't go nuclear with that stuff if you care about the color underneath. 🎸
@@cuda426hemi It is funny you say that , because the few cars I tried it on , I used an ear cleaner and dipped it in the acetone and bang the paint was gone . HAHAHAHAH
@@diecast_MikeEspo See Part 2. How to paint a Hotwheels after you obliterate the undercoat! LOL I like painting candies on some...hit 'em with a silver flake base and then a translucent "any" color - blue, purple, crimson....so much fun in such tiny cars !!! 🎸
@@diecast_MikeEspo I was messing around with 90% Isopropyl good ol' rubbing alcohol - I use it to clean stuff - a little on a tissue will take the dust off the hotwheels mainline cards - I keep a bunch of unopened HWs all over the place and a quick wipe of the clear plastic works real fast dries immediately - well - I also decided to "dust off" some that are OUT of the packaging on display and I learned that even 90% Iso will start to knock off the paint and tampos !! 75% Iso doesn't seem to bother them though. rock n roll !🚗
WOW!! Great tip!! 👍🏻 This is indeed very helpful for custom paint modders. And the fact that it gives a clean decal removal finish without damaging the paint is especially fantastic. Like 176, fully watched as always Bro 👍🏻
Thats weird that the dry erase wouldn't work on the matchbox, since Mattel makes matchbox as well as Hot Wheels. You'd think they use the same tampo process.
I think that Matchbox was made in 1987, while the Hot Wheels are recent. The painting techniques have probably changed since then (and the ownership of Matchbox as well).
Matchbox actually uses a different process akin to printing instead of the rubber stamp tampo process that hotwheels uses. That can be seen by looking at a matchbox graphic that is a bit more complex or detailed. They have a much lower resolution in the graphic versus the stamped tampo of a hotwheels.
Thanks for watching Jeff. I know it does not work on a lot of the older cars.I have tried. I am also trying on some different brand names as well . Thanks for commenting . Mike .
Nice work Mike you do know that a casting from way back won't clean up with a dry eraser the decals from 10 years ago are better made and won't let go like this new stuff will
i tried this technique with that exact same Volvo. Took a bit of time, and multiple applications with the marker, but it did come off without leaving any marks/ Love it.
Thank you for the video I’m definitely going to try that I like a lot of cars that I hate the tampos on so I pass but now I can buy what I like regardless and just take the decals of and swap wheels thank you again great video
