It's hard to get my head round that some of the elderly women here were born in the 18th century.

Oui, j'ai même vu des photos de femmes très âgées nées, comme Marie-Antoinette, en 1755...Mozart, né en 1754, aurait pu être photographié vieillard...Strabisme à 3'40 ? 🥺

Some of them in the middle of the video who appear to be wearing black and wearing headscarves seem to be in mourning.

M'a donné envie de relire " Saintes ou pouliches "d'Isabelle Bricard, 1985 : bouquin sur l'education des jeunes filles en France sous Louis-Philippe et Second Empire...

The one at 3:45 is cross-eyed. There are a few who are quite charming, though.

Colorize them please. What you see here are women that took that monthly bath, put on their best dress for their once a year picture that was quite expensive in that era. If you notice you'll see that the pics are also reversed like a mirror image.

Nah, I hate colorization, unless it is done very, very well.

Always the middle part, not the most flattering when the hair is slicked down like that.

Depends. If the woman is ugly to begin with, no hairstyle is going to improve her. Still, these women in the 1850s/60s are far more interesting and feminine than most American women are today.

It was considered undignified to smile.

They had to stay still for a while for the photo to take. I'm not sure what dental care was like in those days. On top of that, you were thought a drunken no good if you smiled in photos.

These women clothed in tight, controlling corsets must have been brimming with restrained, muted sexuality.

You're addicted to modern TikTok, advertising, and social media. These women are dignified, which seems strange to the modern mind.

Some of the women are naturally attractive, and others are a little homely. All are showing something called "dignity" which is an alien concept to most modern people these days.
