Now I understand why my mechanic charged me $1000 to replace brake pads for all 4 wheels. I had the same noise after the replacement. It was the little bracket on the front-driver side. Great video.
@Cash Only I wouldn't think you'd need either at only 14,000 miles. They will do work and go "by the book", which usually means you'll pay for work they didn't do, or didn't need to do, just cause their book has a predetermined amount to charge for the particular task and its fast and easy extra money. A lot of mechanics are shameless snakes.
Great video just did my daughters brakes last night and she told me today that it is still making noise. I’ll check the brackets tomorrow. Appreciate it.
Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!! I had this same issue on my wife's CX-5, and it was making the same noise after pads and rotor replacement. I’ve been fighting with it for a week, driving myself crazy. It turns out it was the same thing the brake hardware rubbing against the rotor. I owe you big time.
Use hardware kit part number 13588Q, this hardware does not "slide" it snaps down very snug without sliding side to side. I just had the same problems when I changed my brakes, until I found this is new hardware kit👍
Thanks so much for both of your Mazda brake videos...dealer wanted to charge me $1,400 to do them and now I did them for less than a third of that. Really appreciate it!
Of the half-dozen or so videos on CX5 front brake service, this is the best of the bunch. The others leave out steps or details. Buying the Mazda CX6 factory service manual in PDF format for $26 online is also worth every penny for service data, torque values, etc., but the factory service manual sucks if you want step-by-step guidance.
Pads typically wear uneven due to a problem with the caliper piston. I would have changed that caliper. Sticking or bad guide pins can also cause it. Also remove the pin boots and chem out all the old grease. Never put break quiet on the hardware. It attracts dirt and break dust causing the pads to hang up. Also we need to press the Pistons back into the caliper body you should open the bleeder valve so you don't press that fluid back up into the brake system. If you put the rotor on backwards spray the backside off then flip it around and spray the front side off put a lug nut bolt in place to hold the rotor and put your brackets and caliper on then. That way you can actually clean the entire back side of the rotor
Hi! Oem pads are the way to go. But, my pads weren't the problem. I now do have OEM hardware for the next change though. I'm still not entirely sure that all the noise was coming from the front at first. Based on other's experience with the CX-5, maybe I should have checked the rears as well. I'm just so used to the front wearing faster.
I had the same problems with the hardware clips "sliding" into the rotors. I found using a different hardware kit (part number 13588Q) to be a much better fitment with NO "sliding" they sit snug, and no more rubbing squeaky noises 👍
It looks like there are flaps protruding on the side of the hardware. I'm thinking that they are supposed to be bent downwards after aligning them against the brake disk before adding the pads, locking them in the caliper.
Wow...really good video. You covered steps this other guy missed entirely. You still need to block the tires, front and back, so they don't roll. That's from personal experience. If the car comes down on your legs.......ouch!
Thanks for the video and inspiration for doing my front brakes later today. Re pad uneven wear: my guess lube washed away and pad was binding on the bracket from the rust, looks like you live in area where roads are salted for winter. Also, the thinner side of your brake pad has the wear indicator which was probably causing the original issue. Good work on finding second squeaky issue! When I had clicking/squeaking noises coming from the front of my CX-5, I took my ride to dealer (SF Mazda) as I was still under warranty. Their research resulted in fix similar to '16-'20 CX-9 on Mazda TSB Bulletin No.: 04-005/20 CLICK OR SQUEAK NOISE FROM FRONT BRAKES.
Thanks! A few weeks later, I did the rears and there is a chance that the squeak was coming from them. Thankfully, Everything is good now. And thanks for the info on the service bulletin. I will check it out.
I'm pretty sure there's also some electronic thing you have to do to deactivate the rear emergency brakes before you work on the brakes for anyone who's going to do the rear

So we bought a 2017 cx-5 and I'm getting ready to check both front and rear. It looks like you used Carquest front pads. Did you use semi-metallic or ceramic? I'm betting like most cars, Mazda installs semi-metallic from the factory.
Bro quick question do I need a computer to reset anything for changing brakes on the cx5 ? why am asking because we have a auto hold on it that I use a lot lol and one time I took it to fix the rear brakes and they didn’t reset the computer and it wasn’t working anymore. I had to go back so they can fix it with the computer.
@@jcflo1910 Hey! You shouldn't need to reset anything with a computer. The electronic parking brake service mode is the only electrical thing you need to deal with. Good luck!
Good video very informative man. I saw that the larger shims go to the RHS of the extracted caliper lying on the bench. Not fully sure yet but I believe that the larger shims then go to the bottom part of the caliper once installed? The smaller shim then goes to the top. I have a CX5 2016 and its very much the same as yours. Whats your opinion man? Regards from Chile.
Yeah, I definitely noticed the torque specs. missing in the video also. Plus, no Locktite was used on any of the bolts. Just for reference. The torque specs are 75 ft. lbs. for the caliper bracket, 24 ft. lbs. for the caliper, and 90 ft. lbs. for the wheel lug nuts. 😊
One of the better DIY videos I’ve seen. My wife’s 2019 CX-5 has 17k miles. I pulled the calipers off and the original pads and rotors look fantastic. Her car squeaks out of the front brakes when pulling out of the garage at low speeds. After they are heated up they do not squeak at low speeds. Since the parts still look pretty new, should I just bring everything down with brake cleaner or the brake quiet spray?
Hey man! I would do two things. I (and my wife) thought the noise was coming from the front in this video. But, I later found out is was the rear. So, check the rears. If the rears are good, just throw some new pads on the front, and put brake disc quiet on the parts and see if it goes away. Look up brake pad bedding procedures that could help. I'm no expert, but that's what I would try. Good luck man!
You are very welcome. If you have everything ready, give yourself an hour or 2 if it is your first time. The second time you do it would be a lot quicker.
@@oversizedoverlanding2365 I have not. They were the original pads too. I have talked to several people about it and my takeaway is just to check both inner and outer pads for wear. There has to be reason though. Any of my guesses would just be speculation.
Great video! I’m planning to switch out the break pads soon on our 2019 cx-5, question - how often do you replace the rotors? I wasn’t planning to change them but since I will be down there I figured I might as well if it is time! Your video definitely makes me feel a lot more comfortable in taking this task on!
I didn't need to replace the ones I had on. I could have had them turned. But, timing was an issue. So I just decided to replace them. If you get them turned, there is a minimum thickness that acceptable. You could have the same rotors for a decade.
Good Job bud! those rotors look expensive? think they needed changing? Am doing a few jobs on my car today and popped in for a coffee and some inspiration from your new video :) All the best for 2022!
If it was my car, I would not have changed them. And I would have thrown on the cheapest pads from eBay and kept it moving. They probably would have been fine. But, for the wife....you know how it goes. It was also a time thing. Thanks for checking out the video and I hope your 2022 is the best too.
Nice video. Also digged the funky jams. Felt like I was back in Vice City :]. And from what I can tell, you did everything correctly so I'm unsure of what the persistent noise might be.
Thanks! The hardware seemed to be touching the rotor. But, it also could have been the back brakes. I ended replacing them a few weeks later. The wear indicators on them were touching. Oh well. It's perfect now. Hopefully, I won't touch them again for 4 years.
I have a 2014 CX-5 and recently changed the brake pads. The new hardware snapped into place solidly with no movement. Like you said the pads float in the hardware so these were greased. I just checked and the hardware has a sufficient gap away from the rotor and doesn't move. Could it be the aftermarket hardware?
Do yall think it’s a good idea for someone who’s never done any type of work on a car to attempt changing rotors and pads? Just Trying to save a couple of bucks

Piece of advice. The next time you compress the piston make sure the master brake reservoir cap is open sothat brake fluid can go up easily
