  • The Luftwaffe had a keen interest in the idea of the jet powered bomber. Many designs were close to being realised during WW2, and some actually flew in combat. In this video we look at the most promising WW2 jet bombers, some of which took to the sky.

The ME 163 wasn’t actually a jet, it was rocket powered.

Actually, if you want to get really technical a jet of gas does propel the airplane. It is not a TURBOjet, which generates its reaction jet in a specific way, but it is powered by a jet. JATO or jet assisted takeoff was also done with rocket motors rather than turbojets. JPL , which developed those rockets, is still called the Jet Propulsion Laboratory even though its spacecraft are not powered by turbojet engines.

engines that had a 25 hour life, limited fuel availability, extremely poor bombing accuracy, increasingly high levels of opposition, very limited bomb capacity, limited range ... not a good recipe for success.

Another victim of Germany’s rushed time line. And their insistence on Axial flow engines.

The airplane probably didn't last much longer than 25 hours in combat anyway.

You forget that this all ground breaking technology
and nobody had anything like and yet everybody learnt from it, the precursor of what was to come. Who could honestly claim to have had good bombing accuracy during WWII?

    • @thelandofnod123
      @thelandofnod123 3 месяца назад +1

@@anthonyxuereb792 By the late war, jet engines were not ground breaking. As for axial flow, Whittle was well aware of them, however also knew the limitations of the metallurgy and thus continued with centrifugal flow.
What was gleaned from German aerodynamics was the benefits of the swept wing and other aerodynamic improvements.
As for bombing accuracy, the same is still true today, high level unguided munitions are nothing but area attack weapons. Even in WWII, low level attack using unguided weapons was very successful, it just took a lot of practice.

I'm curious to know how you can see this video as I've not published it yet - it's 'unlisted' - only because, once again, RUclips have demonetized it and we are contesting the ruling before we go public with it.
Anyway, could you let me know how this video shows up for you?

@@raafdocumentaries I got what might be called a subscriber noticed and clicked on it. I'm not RUclips savvy enough to do anything fancy. I get the notice that I get from the 'bell' icon, if the title hooks me I open it within seconds. Is that an answer?

Ah OK, I think what I did wrong was put it in a playlist - even 'unlisted' videos, if put in a playlist, become public (I didn't know that until now). Thanks for the feedback!

Whilst some of these jet bombers were close to flying, none of them were even close to service.

The short life of early jet engines was a serious limiting factor. I don't see the America Bomber ever making the trip without a sortie ending mechanical failure.

The Arado 234 was an impressive aircraft for reconnaissance. It had no effect as a bomber. Unless there’s a history of success we aren’t aware of.

to little too late as if they would have made a difference if they would have had this technology in the early 1930's we still would have overwhelmed them with our Military industrial complex later

The Military Industrial Complex and their Owners, are the dark powers in high places who create and profit from war, and are the hidden power ruling from scenes.
