    They should absolutely use the 'separate version fighting for its own life' story idea to bring back Matrix/Supergirl! I also like the idea of a non-evil "gothy uninhibited" version of Kara that can occasionally pop up as a foil for the original.

    • @BrandonVout
      @BrandonVout Год назад +8

      Dark Supergirl would sometimes manifest as the dominant personality for awhile after her initial story in the Post-Crisis continuity. Over time she became less malicious and more bratty. Dr. Fate (being a doctor in psychology) eventually diagnosed the Dark Supergirl personality as a manifestation of Kara's survivor's guilt. This, incidentally, gives her the same status as another Silver/Bronze Age Supergirl villain, Nightflame. The potential character progression is laid out, just waiting for a new writer to pick it up.

    I can see an alternate version of Satan Girl's original story where, instead of trying to extend her life, she's just determined to live up what little time she has, so that Supergirl and the Legion see reports of her at nightclubs dancing with Lotsa guys, drinking heavily, and basically being an out-of-control Wild Child!🤣

      This would make for a very short story. Whooping it up at a Nightclub, while obnoxious, is not illegal. At worst, the Legion could scold her, giving a severe talking to she’d never forget!
      At best, a certain Rick James tune would come back into circulation in the 30th Century.

    I remember drawing the correlation between the Black K in the comics with the Black K in Smallville, but I also imagined it was further related to the artificial K from Superman 3. In fact, as I recall, the Black K of Smallville was created in an almost identical way to the the artificial K from S3. So, in my head canon, every time you try to make artificial K and don't get the formula quite right, you end up with something that splits super-powered Kryptonians into two "good" and "evil" doppelgangers.

    I think the idea of a Supergirl time duplicate just doing a wild deadly gambit to live is actually neat. I'd imagine if you told the story from Satan Girl's side it could be a tearjerker. She doesn't want to hurt her friends, hurt her pets...but she also wants to live even though that's probably not what anyone wants. Nobody's gonna be holding vigils for Red K Kara. She's not her friend's friend she's a temporary problem that'll solve itself to them. In that way, her plan being so...deadly and antisocial does make some sense, if you imagine her alone in space thinking about all these things.

  • @jpboursaw4469

    Come to think of it, the Legions criteria for keeping Lana out seems…..sketchy. Not born with powers? Created artificially? What about Invisible Kid or Giant Boy? Weren’t they ordinary Earth teens who took serums to have those abilities? Sorry, Lana. Kids can be so cruel!
    And, yes, that’s my shameless nudge for future Legion Video(s). Was going to suggest a history of Nightwing and Flamebird, but I’m sure the idea list is already growing faster than a red virus. Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink!

    • @SimonMoon5
      @SimonMoon5 Год назад +12

      The difference with Lana is that her device could be taken away or broken. Invisible Kid took a serum which permanently gave him powers. Colossal Boy also got permanent superpowers (not from a serum). Bouncing Boy also drank something that gave him permanent superpowers. It's not really being "born with" powers that is the issue. It's the whole "you have a gadget which might stop working leaving you powerless suddenly" that was the issue. The Legion didn't want unreliable heroes. That's why they rejected Storm Boy among others.

    I had an epiphany about the Legion a few years ago. Reading their early 60s exploits I noticed that the kids behaved very much the way that the Fawcett Marvel family acted. Even in the 1960's 'satan' was essentially forbidden to say in public, not because it's "invoking" anything, the way nowadays people avoid saying Voldemort, but because it would encourage that kind of magical thinking. That was the whole point of satanISM, it's not about TALKING about the deceiver, it's about this reductive thinking in CALLING him "Satan", because that is ACTUAL blind faith the same way religious blasphemy lets children die of treateable illnesses. THAT is what offends Christians.
      The transition from "saturn" to "satan" is entirely straightforward. In the 1960's it wouldn't have meant ANYTHING more than "diabolical" today, and the name origin of saturn, satyr, and satan are all the same thing. The REASON it is religiously offensive, is the fact that it presents the deceiver in this false "this is what christians ACTUALLY believe" kind of public smear campaign way. When in reality, you ahve seen the businesses, that have been burned down in riots. Christians would call that "satanism" or "paganism" because it IS this notion of corrupting secularism into a cavalcade of witch hunts. ANYBODY should call it diabolical, or any other words that you can still use, before revisionists smear that word as well. The same people who would decriminalize delibarate spreading of HIV, and call it "I'm just being diabolical, a little cheeky rascal, and I'm proud of it" as they ruin lives.
      -_-__-_-
      Keeping the name "satan girl" seems to be a deliberate decision to use it CORRECTLY, no different than naming her after ANY of the apocryphical deity names like Kronos or Hades, like "satan" actually is. The biblical mentions are that kind of English translations, just words that have weird English origins because the language is so irrationally spoken. Satan and angels are not CHARACTERS in the bible, that is secular pop mythology the same way Sauron was not an ACTUAL giant falming eyeball in LotR BOOKS. That is "secular" world being WAY MORE RELIGIOUS than Christians, and they ACTUALLY believe that we need a crusade against JK Rowling.
      THAT IS LITERALLY why Harry Potter is satanIC, because now when you allow magical thinking, the mob rule is ostracizing people who play the new video game online. Satanism is not this projected simple radicalism, by the regressive radicals who ACTUALLY believe that witch hunts and zero medical intervention are a good idea. In the church that is a CONTENTIOUS idea, but outside of the church it is smeared as the Christian mainstream, when in reality it is the NON-christ-like mainstream, promoted by all the radically atheistic governments like USSR. The trend to un-person individuals has been anti-christian atheistic, since the church abandoned it after the middle ages.

    In Alan Moore's Supreme the Supergirl character Suprema actually fights a Satan Girl type character. She was actually much more simple and she was just a demon girl villain for Suprema. Jim Mooney worked on the issue as well. She was written in such an easy way you wonder why this wasn't always the case for Satan Girl. Maybe Enchantress was some inspiration for that character. It is fascinating that Satan Girl inspired so much for decades.

    Now I want Black Kryptonite Supergirl to fight Pre-Crisis Satan Girl for the bragging rights for most evil Supergirl.
    Edit: I just remembered why Satan Girl's costume felt a little similar. A lead lined, full cowled enemy of Supergirl - She's the inspiration for the Lucy Lane Superwoman (ok probably not, but its fun to think about).

  • @dadoctah
    @dadoctah Год назад +8

    They really didn't need the lead-lined suit to explain the immunity to green K. I'm sure I remember something in the continuity during the Silver Age that Kryptonians under the temporary influence of red K wouldn't be further affected by any form of kryptonite until the random effects wire off. Sticks in my mind that Kal even took (inadvertent?) advantage of this to keep his identity secret (Oh, Clark's holding a chunk of green K without flinching; guess he can't be Superman after all).

  • @RJStheFourthAge
    @RJStheFourthAge Год назад +1

    I’ve never heard of this character before, but all it took for me to figure out it was an evil Supergirl was the name and the lead-lined mask. The hints are all there, you just can’t put them together without understanding the name. Satan means - the one who opposes, the opposer (i.e. the opposite of). No knock against you personally CC, but it’s kinda sad that so little is known today about the most printed book in history that we can no longer understand children’s books that are less then 100 years old.

  • @cheezeofages

    That being said I would be interested in seeing what someone could do with this hypothetical "Satin Girl". Maybe there could be duality where she's a normal gal but does vigilante work she does a glow-up like a lady Clark Kent into Superman but from nerdy fashion designer into femme fatale. With comedy resulting sometimes because she's really a dork and trying to live vicariously through her alt identity so she sometimes overplays the trope and it's weird or she's awkward.
    Or maybe some irony where a bruiser style girl ala Power Girl gains somewhat satin themed powers and Satin Girl isn't actually soft but has fabric powers and is a fashionista despite looking like she could pop you apart like an action figure.

    Very excited by the prospect of more Legion. For Silver Age goofiness the Legion is a bottomless well, but IMO the quintessential Silver Age Legion story is the two-parter from Adventure 350 and 351. So much Legion stuff crammed into one big wide-ranging story---pretty much every Legionnaire has a role, plus both Superboy and Supergirl, the Subs and the Super-Pets. And again colored kryptonite plays a role in the conclusion!

    Great job, great info and voice work!
    I've loved the LSH since I was a kid..Mike Grell was the artist when I first came across them and I've been hooked ever since.
    The "magic" of the Legion is their history, the members backstories, their homeworlds and the friendships/relationships within the team.
    Please do more LSH segments....maybe a video for each member, comparing/contrasting how they have changed from first appearance to current version?
    Maybe chapters on the teams biggest storylines (ex. The Great Darkness Saga)??

    Er.. what's with the sexy Satan Girl voice? LOL and the robot voices... I'm liking comicbook theater! also I think Satan Girl spent the majority of her time working on the Domme planet, another world that Supergirl knows about but keeps secret.

    I first read this story in the Adventure Comics #500 reprint collection, alongside several other classic LSH tales. They all had that same stilted, overexpository dialogue you called out. It's really as weird as you said.

    Satan Girl's costume is indestructible, right? Pre-Crisis, that was the explanation for why Superman's costume didn't get damaged. And we're told it's lead-lined.
    So if it’s that easy to make an indestructible costume that protects you from Kryptonite... why doesn’t Supergirl wear that all the time?
    Is showing off her legs really THAT important to her?
