Geddy Lee talked about his hair during this time period and he calls it his racoon hat hair days. LOL That is another reason why they are so beloved as they took their music but not themselves seriously. I think going through their albums from the start would be a great idea but I am enjoying the live performance reactions. If you have the chance check out the documentary Rush Beyond the Lighted Stage. You can find it on RUclips or Netflix. It is a fantastic documentary about the band that is very insightful about them and the music industry at that time period. Cheers 🇨🇦
In a lifetime, you could only be a fraction as good as these guys live. Rush are simply amazing on every single level. If you're a musician, they must appear god-like.
Wal basses, Signature guitars, Tama drums-that was quite a differentRush arsenal back in them days-Racks and RACKS of MIDI, Moog, digital sequencers and samplers-electronic drums🤘🖖✌️🎹🥁🎸🎤🥇🇨🇦👍👌
Not to mention the solid state Gallien-Krueger amps (at one time, they did also make guitar amps!) that Alex was using that somehow still sounded utterly amazing.
IMO this era was the best for Rush as far as live playing...they were old enough to have complete mastery of their instruments/music and young enough to do it at an extremely high level on stage
80's Rush just hits that sweet spot for me. Neil's inspirational lyrics alone, set it apart. No more bullshit fantasy epics, or abstract, impersonal ideas, but just pure emotion and drive. Then as a guitarist, I love what Alex did in this era, more than the generic Prog sound he started with, or the metal sound he ended at. Just squeezed every bit of sound out of every crevice of that guitar.
Yes! I love all RUSH but this was my high-school days and the first of many Rush concerts. It just takes me back to cruising the strip, hanging at the mall and working on my best friends 68 Mustang with this blasting on the boom box.
You mentioned that you like to listen to a band's full albums. A great band to do that with is Jethro Tull. I scanned your channel and didn't see any of their songs listed. Give them a listen. You'll be very glad you did!
That was the tour where I got goosebumps for the very first time listening to music, at the age of 23, during the closing section of this song. When you watch it again without the distracting visuals you'll gain ever more appreciation of how the energy keeps building and building to the end. All 3 were on top form here.
I was hoping you’d do the Cleveland version but this is still great. The tune from this performance to check out is Turn The Page. Geddy plays some complicated stuff while singing that I never get tired of watching.
I love it when people react to RUSH. I love the look on their faces as if to say what the hell is going on here and what the hell am I listening to. It literally happens every time I watch one. Just so everyone knows it's ok to love RUSH. No one is going to call you a nerd anymore and yes this band is EPIC.
My favorite live version of Marathon is on the Time Machine tour in Cleveland. It’s from 2011 & it’s awesome. GED DOES play his’72 Jazz bass on this tour.
The ONLY way to truly appreciate Rush, Yes and The Moody Blues is to listen to an entire album, start to finish. "Marathon" is one of the 8 tracks from their 1985 release, 'Power Windows.' IMHO, the last full complete excellent album until their swan song record, 'Clockwork Angels' (2012). Each Rush fan has their own opinion, however, there are some of us who have followed them from the beginning or very near it. I have loved them since the summer of '75 and waited with anticipation for each new album throughout the years. Rush is the best rock band ever!! ✌💙💙💙✌
The bass is a Wal mk1. The guitar is a Signature Aurora. The Signature guitar company has been defunct for a long time. Alex had three of them- a white one, a grey one, and a black one tuned to F# for 'the big money'.
Yes. Doing album by album in a some chronological way really is the best way to hear a band with such a large catalog over si many years with so many evolutions. Geddy Lee said they never want to make the same album year to year and they didn't all the while remaining uniquely Rush.
That signature brand guitar that Alex was using (a Canadian company I think) had such a unique sound. I loved it but sone thought it was too thin. But for me it was perfect for the albums he used it on. As for Geddy, he used a Rickenbacker for a very long time (not in this concert obviously) because he was a huge fan of Chris squire from Yes. But he’s moved around to different basses quite a bit. Geddy also wrote a book a few years back called “Geddy Lee’s Big Beautiful Book of Bass” and it covers his extensive collection of basses he collected over the years with sone stories behind them. I visited the rock and roll hall of fame in Cleveland about a week after Geddy was there and his book was still featured. I wanted to buy it there but no way I was fitting that on my carry on bag for the flight. Lol.
80s Rush is my fav era of Rush. It gets flack for having that "80s" synth sound and because Alex switched to single coils for a while but they were all in their PRIME in the 80s and imo.. made their best stuff (78's Hemispheres not withstanding). I may be biased though because those were my "formative years". However, as an old bass man myself (and if you become more familiar with Rush's catalog I'm sure you'll agree) Geddys best bass work on albums was done during this so called "synth era". Especially when he first picked up the Wal for the Power Windows and Hold Your Fire albums. His tone was amazing live as well but Unfortunately didn't translate well to the live recordings back then and sounds way to thin and "pokey". If your looking for a great album version of that incredible Wal tone he was laying down back then, a Geddy Lee showcase and bass driven song to check out is Big Money from Power Windows...THE ALBUM VERSION. Thanks for the reactions Justin!
Man, I am one of those who likes Rush from all eras. When I was playing (drums) in a band, I used to listen to my Rush vinyls all the time with my best friend (bass player). Some of those 80's bass lines are the best. It is worth a listen. I have just about everything from Rush on vinyl. And I mean everything, including EPs. By the way, what is your audio setup for vinyl? Do you prefer listen to vinyl on headphones or speakers? It might be good for a future content. Thanks for the video.
Also, Dallas is the location from the Clockwork Angels Tour DVD, when they didn't even play Marathon haha. They played it on the Time Machine Tour, that DVD was filmed in Cleveland.
Thats the thing about Rush, they're not opposed to self depreciation...and do it often in the videos they show before and during live shows. Geddy sometimes wears a shirt with the Rush logo that actually says Rash. Alex is the comedian of the bunch, but all 3 three are humorous...You commented about Alex having barbie dolls by his triggers...those are his girl fans...because Rush attracts more of a guy audience. The props on stage are also an extension of their humor...Oh, how I wish you could have seen them in person. So impressive.
Right on, man! When you listen to the record version, pay super close attention to the bass and drums during the solo. It’s hard to do because the solo is great too, but you’ll see (hear) what I mean. Thanks for the shout out. 👍
One more thing, to get a little personal. When I heard Neil died (a friend texted me), I recalled the lyrics he wrote on this song, “like a streak of lightning, that flashes and fades in the summer sky.” I put the song on and teared up. My first concert was Hemispheres. I was 13.
Oh yes the time when there was no IEM just straight big booming speakers behind them and in front of them. This is a great song and when you watch them evolved over the years you can see how they became, I'm not going to say better but, I guess you can say a lot more polished and in tune to what and how they wanted to play. I saw them so many times in the 80's and every time just amazing. You should check out Geddy's Big Beautiful Book of Bass. I know its not all the guys but check out Neil's drum solo live in Frankfurt.
How the hell did three guys create so much music...in just one song? Well, when you got the world's greatest drummer,, the world's most underrated guitarist, with enough technique and effects to sound like three guitarists, and a stellar bass player, who also sings, (even when he's playing totally tricky sick baslines, and plays keyboards with his feet.. I guess that's how.
Is one of my all-time favorites! Geddy and the Coon cat hat hair lol! This song is amazing other ones from this exact same tour you have to check out are: big money, mission, and force 10
Yes, Justin, very 80's. Haha! Still a great song. You'll find, however, that many a Rush fan have no appreciation for their music post 70's. I find that one must embrace a larger view of Rush in order to understand all aspects of their greatness (yes, I sort of liberated my version of a Sith Lord quote, shoot me 🤣) Forty plus years of music can't stay the same, and many things happened along the way including some life tragedies. And yet, the guys remained together as deepest friends and some of the greatest rock musicians to ever grace the stage. I hope you'll get this sense of the band as you continue on your journey. 🤘👍
My Rush fandom extends from Working Man to The Garden. I don’t love *every* song, but I love every era of their music. Might be because I didn’t discover them until Moving Pictures, so I began in the middle. 🤷🏻♂️
@@Steve_Blackwood - I came in just after the release of ATWAS (Farewell to Kings being my first purchase that was 'hot off the press'), but I feel exactly the same as you. Their evolution was a journey I thoroughly enjoyed. Also, Clockwork Angels was one of their greatest works and The Garden was the perfect way to bring down the curtain... even more so, with hindsight. It's now a real tear-jerker.
@@AnthonyKellett I was just mentioning the Garden in a post here yesterday. It is always a tear jersey now since Neil's passing. An amazing song. And performed live the sound and visuals were astounding. Great great tune!
Sorry to reply to my own message, but the sampled choir in the background at the end, was actually a large British choral ensemble. And it was recorded at Abbey Road studios, if you like this kind of trivia.
Justin, there’s tons of great 80’s/Synth Rush to check out! I may have mentioned this before but check out “Between the Wheels” from 1984!! It’s a proto-industrial, Metal/New Romantics, Electro-Prog masterpiece!!
Yeah, this is a really fun video of a great song. If you get the time, pull up the lyrics to this one. It is very good piece of advice. BTW, the original track of "Working Man" from the debut album crushes the "Live In Cleveland" version. Trust me on this one! 😉☮
The guitar is a Signature Aurora. Alex found it tough to keep in tune and did not like the fretboard. He loved the tone. The Boy Scout Panther Patch was put on there, for his son. Edit: I'm watching your video in real time and replying to both questions. Geddy's bass is a Wal. He used it from 85-93. Go to Rush's website, Gear, Wal Bass. It has a couple of nifty interviews concerning the bass. The link was having this comment get deleted.
So I've watched a bunch of your reactions (mostly Rush) and I'd like to make a suggestion for you next Rush track. Please have a look at listen to The Garden from their Clockwork Angels tour. It' was the last track from Rush's final studio album.
I’ll definitely check it out JHC. It wont be the next one out cause I prerecord all my videos and schedule weeks out… next RUSH video is Natural Science out next week. Following one is (if im remembering correctly off top of my head) La Villa Strangiato in Cleveland. I absolutely will get to your suggestion tho!
@@JustinPanariello pay attention to the drums in Natural Science...some seriously off beat shit happening there...How he managed a complete disconnect from all 4 limbs...lol...literally playing different beats and rhythms x4 I guess that's what makes his work so difficult to replicate.
Yep, I can hear Alex sing an octave lower in the choruses here, as I'd described under the later reaction to this live version earlier. And I've never been a big fan of Geddy's Wal bass sound either. Which isn't entirely the bass' fault - I'm sure you can actually get other, better sounds out of it. It also does sound a bit better in the studio versions. And I love the 'bangs' bit! 😄👍
Oh yeah, late 80’s Rush - the synths, the mullets, sheer bliss! Geddy had a pretty funky sound at the time. Another from this era that’s on the essential Rush-for-bass-player’s menu is The Big Money. I’ve seen them play this live and still have no idea how Geddy sings and plays these bass parts. Link to Dallas performance below. P.S. - like your idea of going through their catalog. I’d follow that ride. Cheers! ruclips.net/video/_wDpVSq6awU/видео.html
This was totally Neverending Story 80's / Flock of Seagulls / aha / Breakfast Club type stuff ....RUSH always could conform to what was 'IN'.....be prepared for 2112
In all honesty it's better to watch Rush live because they sound exactly the same on the album if not better in person. This concert is actually my favorite album I've played it so many times I literally knew what song was coming next
@@ginamarandino6451 as a former drummer, Neil’s drumming during the solo is some of the best I think he ever played. You really have to listen to it more than once to grasp it. It’s just hard not to be “distracted” by the incredible guitar, and it’s even harder on a live performance. I’m a Rush fan from way back, and this song gives me the chills every time I listen to it. The only song newer than Marathon that I got into was Far Cry.
@@JeffOnTheRoads Really???? I love "newer" rush, anything post 1988 is my favorite time period. I became a fan when I was taken to the Counterparts your and was hooked ever since. I would bring binoculars to eack show so I could find the Easter eggs on stage and see Neil's solo Better

Cheers!

In all honesty it's better to watch Rush live because they sound exactly the same on the album if not better in person. This concert is actually my favorite album I've played it so many times I literally knew what song was coming next
It’s harder to hear the finite details in the live versions, and Rush is loaded with finite details.
@@JeffOnTheRoads that's true I didn't think of that
@@ginamarandino6451 as a former drummer, Neil’s drumming during the solo is some of the best I think he ever played.
