Sailing alone overnight to Kauai and escaping huge swell

  • I’m Garrett, at 17 years old I decided I didn’t want to take the standard college route so I made the spontaneous decision to buy a sailboat with money I worked for and set out to sail around the world. Right now I am sailing around the Hawaiian Islands and preparing my boat, a Nor’sea 27, as well as myself for a big passage to French Polynesia when hurricane season comes to an end.
In this video I make my first solo overnight passage ever on my boat from Oahu to Kauai. I also sail down the Napali coast but am forced to leave due to the biggest south swell in a long time hitting Hawaii.
Thanks for watching. If you enjoyed this video please like and subscribe.

I am so impressed…and envious! I’m 52 now. Graduated high school in ‘89 and went right into the Army, got out 4 years later and went right into the career I’m still working in today, 30 years later. What I wouldn’t give to be your age, doing what you’re doing. Do these things while you’re young and free of the trappings of life so many of us take on. Thanks to this career of mine, I’m too beat down physically to take on ocean sailing so I’ll need to get my fix through these wonderful videos. Safe travels, sir.

You need to rig a preventer on your boom so you don’t have an accidental jibe and brake something or get hit in the head use a snap shackle and put another car on each of your jib tracks also, when you get your new sail for your wind vane make a template of it so you can easily make one or two and save some $$

You tightened the nut on the shaft and the vane wasn't flaccid anymore and started poppin'. Then you were slappin' and whackin' the boom. You had a great sail. Keep it up. Pretty soon you'll be going around the world. A Nor'sea is a great boat for a young single-hander to start an adventure with! But being a white guy, you should seriously consider sun protection on the lips, nose, shoulders, pretty much all over, a daily necessity.

It's a bugger when you have to steer with the main! Lol. The wind is ripping so you should be flying. Turn off the diesel and learn how to really sail.
