That SivHD clip 10 minutes in is the reason I ever started playing Katarina, and now she's my second most played champ. Cannot stress enough just how iconic that clip was to me.
I started season 4 and i clearly remember Katarina. In fact she was the first champion i got a pentakill with and i was so proud of that because every friend said that "katarina is so hard" (in retrospective i don't think she was that hard) and i was so sad when they reworked her, that i didn't touch her after that.

The killer instincts W bonus effect was grievous wounds in her Q and the bounce would not reduce the damage after the first hit, so you used w and then q to burst teams who could no longer heal

Also i remember doing my first penta with kat in season 5, and i was BARELY trying, either way good times, im glad she got nerfed, she was very unfair, but you know what else is unfair? no hex blade, ill always miss that thing, it was an extra skill! the devs are simplifyng LoL a lot and each season it feels like the champs have less and less of their original uniqueness.

Yoooo faceroll katarina was the funniest thing. The only assassin I really mained with how degenerate and fun it was. This was also DFG era, and just blowing through 4 champs with enough resets to ult twice a fight was peak “Old League”.
It's not mechanical skill so much as hinging on whether or not you take the right daggers. She's still a wrecking ball who can engage and disengage somewhat cleanly if she plays it right, it's just that less skilled players take more bad shunpos and let themselves get hit by more bad daggers.
The Katarina rework was one of the main reasons I stopped playing League back in the days, with her being my main. It was just too different to her old kit and all this picking up of daggers made me feel like playing a Draven rip-off. Because of peer pressure I started playing again at the end of S11 and ofc tried Katarina again. My muscle memory still has been there and probably a lot of my enemies were confused, when I threw wards in the middle of the lane, because I wanted to shunpo on them... But after getting used to the "new" (lol) Katarina, I'd actually say, that she got stronger and more fun to play. She's more challenging to play and master, but also more rewarding and versatile. I hated the rework at first, but ultimately I think it's good.
i played all 3 versions of katarina. I loved the first one cause i was noob kid who just wanted to play katarina and the fact that she was a bad champion back then was actually what i liked about her it was challenging to me to make her work and outplay enemies. Second katarina was the best with animation, playstyle it was THE champion. Never liked her last rework, but i love katarina so i still play her and even tho i dont play ranked anymore i still get asked "real rank?" by enemy team whenever i play normal draft with friends.
I mained Katarina since the start of LOL and I'm glad to see a video about the true old Katarina. Most videos are about the reworked one. Anyway I don't remember the ratio on the R but the build was AD, stacking 3 bloodthirster after the shoes. I remember the ulti melting people like butter and Q dealing insane damage. The E was really just a gap closer. I remember trying the AP build with the Rilay sceptre but the damage wasn't good enough compare to the AD version.
I was a Katarina only player from season 2 up until her rework (literally didnt play any other character ever), and new Kat didnt feel as explosive as old to me, no skill? probably yeah, but she was merely a very high risk very high reward living nuke, if she gets her way entire enemy team dies, if she happens to get attacked or rushed down before health bars are low, you'll find her either wasting her precious resources on dealing with that enemy or getting so low on health she cant join in. And that was a unique playstyle, no other champion did this, once she went in there was no going out and she had 0 defensive abilities. Either enemy team explodes or she does. Most important thing was to know when to go in. After the rework she had more options, more escapes, different ways to deal damage, more counterplay but as an old kat player she wasnt the same champion anymore, that unique playstyle was gone. I hovered D1 with her back in the day when there was no masters, but after she got reworked i didnt feel like playing her anymore, i switched to evelynn instead, who also has a pretty unique glass cannon playstyle.
I have been there when there was first version of Katarina and played her a little, but it wasn’t that funny champ for me. That was the time before graves was released. I played Lux as main on mid. That time most of the players considered her as a support champ and were shocked when Lux entered mid with full ap and cd (now ability haste) items. She had also much longer range on R - that time called finales fulnkeln or something that.. I started to play Kat as main when she had changed W sinister steel into insta small aoe around her. By that time, she was most overpowered ever. It was really crazy. If you had good team composition with heavy cc like malph, ammumu and your friends used R with that kind of champs in right moment and you as the Kat was nearby waiting, than you jumped in and it was total slaughter house. From that moment Kat has been always nerfed. I also want to mention old Talon. He had insta charge and silence on his E cut throat instead of that stupid parkour shit he has now. What a matches there were on the mid when Kat met Talon, by that time also very solid pick on mid. I would give a fortune when I could play that version of the league… Guess I am league veteran already.
I started playing kat a lot at the end of s4 and i have to say, old kat was indeed easy asf (although I didn't wanna admit it)... In early, it was basically get gold, poke and go in for the kill. Maybe roam a lil bit for some extra gold. No need to worry if you had flash or not, as long as you had a ward. Then she would dominate and only become useless if she got hard cc'ed. The current kat gameplay is actually difficult because it relies heavily on positioning (of your champ, the daggers, things you can e on and the enemy), but if played correctly, its extremely rewarding. Your own daggers can bait you and there's not a lot of poking, but rather a lot of mini fights that can make you or break you. You're only useful in mid/late game if you have items, and if not, you're gonna keep on being useless unless you get a ton of gold quickly. Basically, if you're ~1 complete item behind your enemy, you're screwed.

i think katarina is one of the hardest champ in league nowadays , between her awful laning phase , her very weird and patient gamestyle in teamfight who makes her really unique to play , her resets who makes you have to press 20 buttons in one teamfight and all in a precise order plus in a strategic way to aim q or w , her really predictable movements because of daggers being her resets and her dmg , you can see the daggers you just have to dont go close to them and she is legit useless . I just feel like mecanically speaking , she is one of the hardest with lee sin riven and champs like that , and also in terms of macro , the fact that she is really unique make her hard to learn . So i think the skill cap is high , even if a noob can e r in and do a lot of dmg against noob teams because of her laning phase , noobs will get a hard time to be fed , and if kata is not fed she is not easy at all , but i think that the skill ceilling is absolutely huge . Katarina is definitely one of the hardest champ to completely master .
@@duck-cc4cx i mean sure , at low elo , every champ can be play simply , even lee sin , who is for most people one of the hardest champ mecanically speaking , you can technically just hit q , q again and then e r , and you will do big dmg , but his skill ceilling is ansolutely huge , its the same for kata , you dont need to be perfect to play her , no champ need that , but she is hard to begin well with her because of her hard laning phase and her unique playstyle, more a champ is unique , the hardest he is to start being good with him , this is skill cap , and the most combos / possibility the kit let you do , the hardest and complex is the skill ceilling .
@@Barook thats true, initially i was super thrown off by the fact that her laning phase was literally hot garbage and you just had to either give up wave control or get lucky and kill them on their mistakes, but it feels really good to play after you understand her playstyle
Shunpo teleported Katarina behind the enemy only if she used Killer Instinct to empower it. If not, it would teleport Katarina in front of the enemy. It was then changed to the other side of the target with Killer Instinct and the same side without it. Basically, using Killer Instinct with Bouncing Blades was for poke, and you could do a short trade with Shunpo auto-attacking then running away, or you could all in with Bouncing Blades then Killer Instinct, Shunpo and Death Lotus.
As someone who spent years playing Kat and experienced both versions of her I can say the old one was pretty much a very unskilled version but for example that sivhd clip is what made me play her in the first place. And nowadays she's quite more rewarding to play. It feels nice to have her in the state she is post rework with a lot more outplay potential and skill involved in the champ which is good and quite more healthier for the game as well.
First time I ever played League was back in late 2012, and Katarina was the first champ that I played. Old Kat does hold a special place in my heart, and I was never too fond of the rework. However, I do enjoy playing against the current Katarina more
The new build I’m seeing on Kay this preseason is Heartsteel into titanic hydra. Your ult let’s you proc the on hit effect of heartsteel on everyone and will make your damage scale infinite with titanic hydra.
Kat has always been at least my secondary, often my main, ever since I started playing in 2013!! I love assassins and she always appealed to me as a result of that. Her rework to me was perfect, it kept everything I enjoyed about Kata, while adding a lot of skill expression to her and although she isn’t as faceroll when she gets ahead, she actually became a lot more viable against better opponents when behind or when she can’t just go in and burst someone because she now has so much more mobility and her combos just feel very really satisfying while being pretty damn strong. Her early used to be such hot garbage but since the rework she actually has surprisingly good all ins at Level 2 and 3 and she can even 1v1 some assassins if she outplays them it’s really fun. My most played champ is LB and I also play a lot of Fizz so I’ve experienced bad reworks before!!! But the Kat rework was really really good and I loved it, it kept with the spirit of one of my favourite champs while actually making her way way better with stuff like an actually early game, more frontloaded burst, super high mobility in exchange for having to catch her daggers and stuff. Loved it. Then I also loved the Akali rework to the point since she was reworked, she’s been my favourite champ ever since so maybe I’m not the best judge, haha.
the fact u think its even a question whether or not katarina is a hard champ to play already makes me realize this video isnt worth watching, shes up there with the top 10 hardest champs in the game to play at a high level, especially when she gets shit on in the only lane shes playable by pretty much every meta champ
People really do be out here complaining about Katarina still, even after a million nerfs that made her nearly unplayable for non-OTPs who really just play her to this day cus that's what makes them enjoy the game (myself included). Can't wait for them to nerf Kat's movement speed for the 69th time again!
I remember her when she does not have a spin, only her death lotus Ult. Her second skill was an empowerment ability, and her bouncing blades has no priority. It only bounces randomly in a minion wave. She's very unforgivable if u made a mistake, but her Ultimate does insane damage. It's so strong that u only need to press her E Blink then ult, and 1 or 3 squishy enemy would die from only 3 blades of Death Lotus. So she's either you kill an enemies and escape, or you don't and just die.
I started the game in season 3 and I fell in love with Kat in season 4. Must say the rework was one of the best, since it made me feel like I still had the potential to pop off, but the pressure was on me to prepare daggers and take note of where I was going to blink. Will always miss the old Warring Kingdoms Shunpo effect, though..
I do play Kat on occasion and I *cannot* confirm that random mashing doesn't work anymore - I started playing in season 10 (11 for Kat) so I never saw the old version, but I just randomly press buttons and win
Katarinas original W was that it empowered one of her other 2 abilities (Q, E) you had to chose one or the other after activating the W to be empowered. For the most part players chose Q for lane poke/trade of damage as the coding on her original Q was a bit wonky, in the moment were katarina casted the ability it had basically already plotted its course for every bounce meaning that it would always hit you if you were near the minions the moment katarina casted the ability. The E was mainly chosen for the all in moment for obvious reasons.
I was thinking "w did add heal reduction to sth" thinking it might have been her autos but I'm not sure anymore since it's is still known it was q. All i remember is the point of her was that no one expected her deceptively short ult CD of a minute or sth which was super short back then. You weren't expected to kill someone using it. At least not the first time. Fights were slow enough that just walking out of it and staying in lane was an option. Or cc obviously. Edit: thinking about it just straight up DMG might be the most plausible right after jumping onto the enemy with shunpo and gaining dodge.
As a Kat main I honestly feel like middle Kat was the strongest and you could easily tilt teamfights around. but honestly felt like rolling your face on the keyboard to get a penta. Nowadays Kat feels so much skilled and interesting to play, even though her laning face is super weak and, because of the delay of picking up the daggers, you need to enter teamfights last so you're very reliant on your team to get the enemy champions under half HP to be somehow useful.
I used to be a katarina Main in Season 2-4. I really loved her and even had my masterys named: lets jump them dead.. I really miss old Katarina. I know the new Katarina is more skillfull but i would say that even the old Katarina before her rework would be great in todays LoL. But since her rework i really struggled and never had that much fun like i used to when i played her before the rework. She felt more predictable and kinda all over the place with the daggers. In a teamfight the daggers flew around so randomly with the killsresets you dont even know where you jump if you are in such killrush. I would have loved that she would stay the in the old state. Idk maybe you guys feel the same. If so leave a comment
As a mid laner in grand master, you should think that fast to know where dagger should you land yourself, good decision-making is a skill relevant in higher elos, the downside of the old katarina is you wont last in high elo with these adjustments as you are hard punished in earl games, youll fall hard behind and become useless in late game, this rework opens you to a better decision making of higher risk, higher reward
I think she wouldnt be that good on todays game actually, the game has so much cc and mobility in every champ that she would struggle a bit, she would probably be in a master yi state still, too good for low elo and bit bad for high elo, champs like fizz also suffer from this now a days, where they had crazy mobility in the old days but compared to todays game its nothing special, but i actually think old kata was a lot more fun to play, expecially for new players she was a simple assassin that you could do a lot with and u dont many of thouse now a days
I was a season 3-4 Katarina main. The main reason I fell in love with her was because she was one of the few champs I could feel good about playing on my 350 ping and 5 fps. I'm not joking. All I had to do was find the perfect moment to go in and R. Which is a skill worth developing. I like her rework too. But the ward hopping was the biggest thing that cost her safeness low skill mistakes I think. I'm getting old and busy and bored and don't play like I used to simply because of investment so I mostly do arams now... But Katarina will always be the face of league of legends to me. The only other champ I've completely fallen in love with is Bard. And that's for completely opposite reasons. High skill+ still somehow accidentally killing your teammates.
The rework actually made me love the champ, before she seemed so one sided, go in -> get kill -> pentakill or go in -> die, nowadays she has such a cool and unique playstyle with picking up the daggers. Unfortunately I'm really not that good with her hehe.
I still remember that the most kills in a game i got with Katarina, like 54 or 56, in a normal. It was her second version, but that champion was worse than Master Yi.
Killer instincts never gave an effect to your basic attack on activation as far as I can remember, it was just basic abilities (I'm guessing that was old inconsistent ability text).
I wouldn't say she is one of the hardes champs to play, as she can easily get back in the game and become a monster even if she gets a bit behind, but she sure does take more planning to be played correctly and has a fair amount of counterplay. She feels like a nicely designed champion both to play or to play against. Its really a bummer that she often gets bad patches and her win rate often tanks a lot even with small changes. Feels very volatile.
I would argue that if the enemy knows how to play against you then she feels extremely bad to play. Certain match-ups feel unplayable. But if they constantly make stupid mistakes or leave you unchecked, then she is a beast. On the other hand, anything that isn't an AP build on her feels very bad to play against. She shouldn't be the one to engage first, tank absurd damage and heal back to full and or kill everyone while having insane mobility.
rework kat was cool till they dumped the onhit effects onto her r. It doesn't match up with anything else in her kit and as long as they keep it, she will be impossible to balance.
i always felt her ult was too overloaded. the damage on three enemies is already nasty. then they add on hits and grievous wounds on top of it. why not give it lifesteal just for good measure?

@@Nightmare-fe9hr making her more reliant on daggers would be nice. i feel like she just punishes you for having bad teammates, and having a kill reset on your entire moveset, on a mobile champion at that, is the epitome of "win more"
Currently maining kat and it seems like a nightmare because 90% of matchups eat you alive and if you don't get ahead you're useless because you have no other utility but it's so fun to play her that i won't stop to be a kat main you need to be a masochist at least in the current seasons
Man original kata was a beast, but the first rework one was just something else I remember a game that i finished with 97 kills, i lost that game because the team was just trying to get me to 10 pentakills in one game at some point i finished with only 8 sadlly but the resets were just crazy and how simple it was to play her, it was the definition of smashing your head on the keyboard and getting a penta Ps at high rank she wasnt that easy with her clear weaknesses but at low elo where players didny know how to deal with her she was just nutz
I only started playing after her rework and had 2 friends who main Kata and occasionally played her when I got her ARAM, and her strength increases the less organized a team is, like one of my friends made a penta with her in the first minute of an ARAM because the enemy team seemingly tried to become a single person, but the moment the enemy team stops hugging up to each other and you cant hit everyone with her daggers she starts to fall off. She is still very absueable in my eyes, like Im not the best player and can still look good on Kata, but she can also be easily stopped by something as simple as Singeds glue, and what I personally find very funny is how people who abuse her aggressively try to defend how much skill she takes while someone who mains her just admits how stupidly busted she can be. Its takes skill to play a good Kata, I admit that, but it doesnt take skill to Kata at all.
Kat otp here. I really love these videos and was excited to finally see one about my favourite champ. I think what I like most about these videos are their unbiased look at champs throughout their lifetime. I remember being one of the first Kats on pbe in preseason 11 testing botrk kat and it was nice to walk thru memory lane. Ik people find this champ skillless when their mid runs it into her daggers levels 3-6 over and over. And tbh I thought the same thing when I picked her up in S9, but i think if you play just a few games on her you realize why she's only played by a few players (who only play her) her take on league is very unique, fun and rewarding. I've been struggling with her in the preseason but i think she's a major reason why i still play this game. There's nothing like the thrill of her strategy and execution she must take in team fights. One misinput is the difference between blowing up instantly or a 1v5 pentakill
As much as I hate her for her reseting abilities this is actually a great rework. It separates the high skilled katarina players from the low skilled ones. 💯
Now that I think of it is kat like one of the only female champs with some damage to her face even though the scar does make her design look cool. also excluding samira because eyepatch no visible damage
You have a few small details incorrect. For example, her splash art was changed before the original rework. i started playing in season 2 and she was already using the rework splash art but still used Killer Instinct as her W.
Kat is the first champion I played in LOL and it was reworked Kat already. And I was like Oh, this game is kind of hard to play😂 Then I realized I picked one of the hardest champions in this game :)
I want old katarina W back and the animation for the E. All the changes are amazing but there was so much satisfaction behind pressing sinister steel with the audio feedback, and the animation of teleporting with E. Now the E is more of just a fast dash with a strange animation that doesnt feel as snappy. Still one trick her tho
this. literally all i want is her old e animation. it was so smooth and nice to use, now its cluncky i hate it. i hate new rework but i love katarina so i play her aways still
My memory of beta era LoL, was that you had to keep a CC up for the enemy Kat or you lost the team fight. But as long as Blitz for example kept his finger on the R key, she didn't do much. But then again, everyone was kinda new at the time, and I was certainly not playing with the cream of the crop. I feel that the new blade retrieving version of Kat is a great design, that is somewhat tainted by point and click assassins that just do their damage instead of being reliant on someone stepping into a telegraphed red circle. The ult is also a remnant of her old kit that revolved around it, now so much of the power budget is stripped from it that rooting yourself feels real bad for the damage that comes out of it. I am personally hoping that Riot can remake an ult for her that fits the high tempo bouncy mobility that the rest of the kit has now, maybe just placing a lot of daggers or something.
Kata is by no means easy to play vs non iron elo players. Don't say: She can oneshot people end game. This is what assasins do. Her resets are op. Her resets are pretty good, making her damage output in a fight more consistant, or so she can exit the fight after killing prio targets. Like every other assasins can. Her R does so much damage. The ap scaling on her R is less then Lux full combo, and takes a bit longer(2.5 full channel) and she needs to be on you for that whole time not getting cced. You can litterly just walk out of it. Lux can do it pretty safe while kata needs to dive inn. Kata also needs to wait for the enemy to make a mistake(unless she has ult but they still need to walk up, or be low enough) or a ganks to acctaully do damage vs good players. Litterly just dont stand close enough to her if you are a mage or a adc without peel. unless you have dodges which makes kata useless as fuck, as all her damage is in her daggers, and ult. Only good thing with her atm is that she applies on hit effects on R, E and daggers. Her damage feels alot more backloaded then most assasins. Unless really fed you useally have some room for counter play. Her being more "back loaded" and no invis or good engage makes her balanced cus she is an aoe assasin. If she had invis or or wall jump(like talon, not with daggers) she would be alot better. Sure she can jump on you from FOW Press E W Ult you and if you are playing a mage it might suck when she is fed, feeling like there is no counter play. But thats how its supposed to be, She is fed. and you didnt have vision. See her coming and she shouldnt be able to kill you( unless she has flash maybe) if she runs at you simply move away. Kata does good cus people make mistakes, misposision, use and miss all their abilites, or get counterd by her. She useally dont win lane, her farming aint that great. She cant really trade or poke. She has no neutral game, unlike in my opinion other assians have, like zed, akali, fizz(maybe not), qianana.
I had the chance to play every version of katarina. One thing to mention is that the very first katarina dealt A LOT of damage with shumpoo ! I don't really remember the effect on AA for the W. I don't remember it but I'm pretty sure it was shitty, like anti heal too. (for my 13years old ass that was shitty)

Post rework Katarina has a lot of mechanical skill to her kit. That doesn't mean it isn't over powered. Banger series btw. love before the rework!
IMO Kat is one if the easiest to counter champions for better players
her laning phase is awful, but if she survived the laning phase and somehow picked up a kill or two, she can snowball
Are you sure she IS OP? I always seem to see her as a pubstomper than much else from what I heard or even played at times.
It's not mechanical skill so much as hinging on whether or not you take the right daggers. She's still a wrecking ball who can engage and disengage somewhat cleanly if she plays it right, it's just that less skilled players take more bad shunpos and let themselves get hit by more bad daggers.

The Katarina rework was one of the main reasons I stopped playing League back in the days, with her being my main. It was just too different to her old kit and all this picking up of daggers made me feel like playing a Draven rip-off. Because of peer pressure I started playing again at the end of S11 and ofc tried Katarina again. My muscle memory still has been there and probably a lot of my enemies were confused, when I threw wards in the middle of the lane, because I wanted to shunpo on them...
But after getting used to the "new" (lol) Katarina, I'd actually say, that she got stronger and more fun to play. She's more challenging to play and master, but also more rewarding and versatile. I hated the rework at first, but ultimately I think it's good.
i played all 3 versions of katarina. I loved the first one cause i was noob kid who just wanted to play katarina and the fact that she was a bad champion back then was actually what i liked about her it was challenging to me to make her work and outplay enemies. Second katarina was the best with animation, playstyle it was THE champion. Never liked her last rework, but i love katarina so i still play her and even tho i dont play ranked anymore i still get asked "real rank?" by enemy team whenever i play normal draft with friends.

She used to be my main before her rework.
I mained Katarina since the start of LOL and I'm glad to see a video about the true old Katarina. Most videos are about the reworked one. Anyway I don't remember the ratio on the R but the build was AD, stacking 3 bloodthirster after the shoes. I remember the ulti melting people like butter and Q dealing insane damage. The E was really just a gap closer. I remember trying the AP build with the Rilay sceptre but the damage wasn't good enough compare to the AD version.
I was a Katarina only player from season 2 up until her rework (literally didnt play any other character ever), and new Kat didnt feel as explosive as old to me, no skill? probably yeah, but she was merely a very high risk very high reward living nuke, if she gets her way entire enemy team dies, if she happens to get attacked or rushed down before health bars are low, you'll find her either wasting her precious resources on dealing with that enemy or getting so low on health she cant join in. And that was a unique playstyle, no other champion did this, once she went in there was no going out and she had 0 defensive abilities. Either enemy team explodes or she does. Most important thing was to know when to go in. After the rework she had more options, more escapes, different ways to deal damage, more counterplay but as an old kat player she wasnt the same champion anymore, that unique playstyle was gone. I hovered D1 with her back in the day when there was no masters, but after she got reworked i didnt feel like playing her anymore, i switched to evelynn instead, who also has a pretty unique glass cannon playstyle.
I have been there when there was first version of Katarina and played her a little, but it wasn’t that funny champ for me. That was the time before graves was released. I played Lux as main on mid. That time most of the players considered her as a support champ and were shocked when Lux entered mid with full ap and cd (now ability haste) items. She had also much longer range on R - that time called finales fulnkeln or something that.. I started to play Kat as main when she had changed W sinister steel into insta small aoe around her. By that time, she was most overpowered ever. It was really crazy. If you had good team composition with heavy cc like malph, ammumu and your friends used R with that kind of champs in right moment and you as the Kat was nearby waiting, than you jumped in and it was total slaughter house. From that moment Kat has been always nerfed.
I also want to mention old Talon. He had insta charge and silence on his E cut throat instead of that stupid parkour shit he has now. What a matches there were on the mid when Kat met Talon, by that time also very solid pick on mid. I would give a fortune when I could play that version of the league…

The og old katarina model and the way she moved was by far the best i miss it
I started playing kat a lot at the end of s4 and i have to say, old kat was indeed easy asf (although I didn't wanna admit it)... In early, it was basically get gold, poke and go in for the kill. Maybe roam a lil bit for some extra gold. No need to worry if you had flash or not, as long as you had a ward. Then she would dominate and only become useless if she got hard cc'ed.
The current kat gameplay is actually difficult because it relies heavily on positioning (of your champ, the daggers, things you can e on and the enemy), but if played correctly, its extremely rewarding. Your own daggers can bait you and there's not a lot of poking, but rather a lot of mini fights that can make you or break you. You're only useful in mid/late game if you have items, and if not, you're gonna keep on being useless unless you get a ton of gold quickly. Basically, if you're ~1 complete item behind your enemy, you're screwed.

i think katarina is one of the hardest champ in league nowadays , between her awful laning phase , her very weird and patient gamestyle in teamfight who makes her really unique to play , her resets who makes you have to press 20 buttons in one teamfight and all in a precise order plus in a strategic way to aim q or w , her really predictable movements because of daggers being her resets and her dmg , you can see the daggers you just have to dont go close to them and she is legit useless . I just feel like mecanically speaking , she is one of the hardest with lee sin riven and champs like that , and also in terms of macro , the fact that she is really unique make her hard to learn . So i think the skill cap is high , even if a noob can e r in and do a lot of dmg against noob teams because of her laning phase , noobs will get a hard time to be fed , and if kata is not fed she is not easy at all , but i think that the skill ceilling is absolutely huge . Katarina is definitely one of the hardest champ to completely master .

@@duck-cc4cx i mean sure , at low elo , every champ can be play simply , even lee sin , who is for most people one of the hardest champ mecanically speaking , you can technically just hit q , q again and then e r , and you will do big dmg , but his skill ceilling is ansolutely huge , its the same for kata , you dont need to be perfect to play her , no champ need that , but she is hard to begin well with her because of her hard laning phase and her unique playstyle, more a champ is unique , the hardest he is to start being good with him , this is skill cap , and the most combos / possibility the kit let you do , the hardest and complex is the skill ceilling .
@@Barook thats true, initially i was super thrown off by the fact that her laning phase was literally hot garbage and you just had to either give up wave control or get lucky and kill them on their mistakes, but it feels really good to play after you understand her playstyle
Shunpo teleported Katarina behind the enemy only if she used Killer Instinct to empower it. If not, it would teleport Katarina in front of the enemy. It was then changed to the other side of the target with Killer Instinct and the same side without it. Basically, using Killer Instinct with Bouncing Blades was for poke, and you could do a short trade with Shunpo auto-attacking then running away, or you could all in with Bouncing Blades then Killer Instinct, Shunpo and Death Lotus.
As someone who spent years playing Kat and experienced both versions of her I can say the old one was pretty much a very unskilled version but for example that sivhd clip is what made me play her in the first place. And nowadays she's quite more rewarding to play. It feels nice to have her in the state she is post rework with a lot more outplay potential and skill involved in the champ which is good and quite more healthier for the game as well.

Kat has always been at least my secondary, often my main, ever since I started playing in 2013!! I love assassins and she always appealed to me as a result of that. Her rework to me was perfect, it kept everything I enjoyed about Kata, while adding a lot of skill expression to her and although she isn’t as faceroll when she gets ahead, she actually became a lot more viable against better opponents when behind or when she can’t just go in and burst someone because she now has so much more mobility and her combos just feel very really satisfying while being pretty damn strong. Her early used to be such hot garbage but since the rework she actually has surprisingly good all ins at Level 2 and 3 and she can even 1v1 some assassins if she outplays them it’s really fun. My most played champ is LB and I also play a lot of Fizz so I’ve experienced bad reworks before!!! But the Kat rework was really really good and I loved it, it kept with the spirit of one of my favourite champs while actually making her way way better with stuff like an actually early game, more frontloaded burst, super high mobility in exchange for having to catch her daggers and stuff. Loved it. Then I also loved the Akali rework to the point since she was reworked, she’s been my favourite champ ever since so maybe I’m not the best judge, haha.

the fact u think its even a question whether or not katarina is a hard champ to play already makes me realize this video isnt worth watching, shes up there with the top 10 hardest champs in the game to play at a high level, especially when she gets shit on in the only lane shes playable by pretty much every meta champ
People really do be out here complaining about Katarina still, even after a million nerfs that made her nearly unplayable for non-OTPs who really just play her to this day cus that's what makes them enjoy the game (myself included). Can't wait for them to nerf Kat's movement speed for the 69th time again!
I remember her when she does not have a spin, only her death lotus Ult. Her second skill was an empowerment ability, and her bouncing blades has no priority. It only bounces randomly in a minion wave. She's very unforgivable if u made a mistake, but her Ultimate does insane damage. It's so strong that u only need to press her E Blink then ult, and 1 or 3 squishy enemy would die from only 3 blades of Death Lotus. So she's either you kill an enemies and escape, or you don't and just die.

I started the game in season 3 and I fell in love with Kat in season 4. Must say the rework was one of the best, since it made me feel like I still had the potential to pop off, but the pressure was on me to prepare daggers and take note of where I was going to blink. Will always miss the old Warring Kingdoms Shunpo effect, though..
I do play Kat on occasion and I *cannot* confirm that random mashing doesn't work anymore - I started playing in season 10 (11 for Kat) so I never saw the old version, but I just randomly press buttons and win
I started playing in S4, where she was the facerolling, ward jumping Champ and let me tell you this: she was terror

Katarinas original W was that it empowered one of her other 2 abilities (Q, E) you had to chose one or the other after activating the W to be empowered.
For the most part players chose Q for lane poke/trade of damage as the coding on her original Q was a bit wonky, in the moment were katarina casted the ability it had basically already plotted its course for every bounce meaning that it would always hit you if you were near the minions the moment katarina casted the ability.
The E was mainly chosen for the all in moment for obvious reasons.
You didn't have to choose, it was always the first ability you casted.

I was thinking "w did add heal reduction to sth" thinking it might have been her autos but I'm not sure anymore since it's is still known it was q.
All i remember is the point of her was that no one expected her deceptively short ult CD of a minute or sth which was super short back then. You weren't expected to kill someone using it. At least not the first time. Fights were slow enough that just walking out of it and staying in lane was an option. Or cc obviously.
Edit: thinking about it just straight up DMG might be the most plausible right after jumping onto the enemy with shunpo and gaining dodge.
As a Kat main I honestly feel like middle Kat was the strongest and you could easily tilt teamfights around. but honestly felt like rolling your face on the keyboard to get a penta. Nowadays Kat feels so much skilled and interesting to play, even though her laning face is super weak and, because of the delay of picking up the daggers, you need to enter teamfights last so you're very reliant on your team to get the enemy champions under half HP to be somehow useful.
Old kat was one of the first champions i played back in s2. I used to build her full ad bc i she had daggers and it made sense w her aa enhancement

I used to be a katarina Main in Season 2-4. I really loved her and even had my masterys named: lets jump them dead.. I really miss old Katarina. I know the new Katarina is more skillfull but i would say that even the old Katarina before her rework would be great in todays LoL. But since her rework i really struggled and never had that much fun like i used to when i played her before the rework. She felt more predictable and kinda all over the place with the daggers. In a teamfight the daggers flew around so randomly with the killsresets you dont even know where you jump if you are in such killrush. I would have loved that she would stay the in the old state. Idk maybe you guys feel the same. If so leave a comment
As a mid laner in grand master, you should think that fast to know where dagger should you land yourself, good decision-making is a skill relevant in higher elos, the downside of the old katarina is you wont last in high elo with these adjustments as you are hard punished in earl games, youll fall hard behind and become useless in late game, this rework opens you to a better decision making of higher risk, higher reward
I think she wouldnt be that good on todays game actually, the game has so much cc and mobility in every champ that she would struggle a bit, she would probably be in a master yi state still, too good for low elo and bit bad for high elo, champs like fizz also suffer from this now a days, where they had crazy mobility in the old days but compared to todays game its nothing special, but i actually think old kata was a lot more fun to play, expecially for new players she was a simple assassin that you could do a lot with and u dont many of thouse now a days

I was a season 3-4 Katarina main. The main reason I fell in love with her was because she was one of the few champs I could feel good about playing on my 350 ping and 5 fps. I'm not joking.
All I had to do was find the perfect moment to go in and R.
Which is a skill worth developing.
I like her rework too. But the ward hopping was the biggest thing that cost her safeness low skill mistakes I think.
I'm getting old and busy and bored and don't play like I used to simply because of investment so I mostly do arams now... But Katarina will always be the face of league of legends to me.
The only other champ I've completely fallen in love with is Bard. And that's for completely opposite reasons. High skill+ still somehow accidentally killing your teammates.

I was there when katarina got first released, but i never played her at the time. I remember her briefly but not very well.
The rework actually made me love the champ, before she seemed so one sided, go in -> get kill -> pentakill or go in -> die, nowadays she has such a cool and unique playstyle with picking up the daggers.
Unfortunately I'm really not that good with her hehe.

I still remember that the most kills in a game i got with Katarina, like 54 or 56, in a normal. It was her second version, but that champion was worse than Master Yi.
Killer instincts never gave an effect to your basic attack on activation as far as I can remember, it was just basic abilities (I'm guessing that was old inconsistent ability text).

I wouldn't say she is one of the hardes champs to play, as she can easily get back in the game and become a monster even if she gets a bit behind, but she sure does take more planning to be played correctly and has a fair amount of counterplay. She feels like a nicely designed champion both to play or to play against. Its really a bummer that she often gets bad patches and her win rate often tanks a lot even with small changes. Feels very volatile.
I would argue that if the enemy knows how to play against you then she feels extremely bad to play. Certain match-ups feel unplayable. But if they constantly make stupid mistakes or leave you unchecked, then she is a beast. On the other hand, anything that isn't an AP build on her feels very bad to play against. She shouldn't be the one to engage first, tank absurd damage and heal back to full and or kill everyone while having insane mobility.
My friend is a kata main, and I think, kata as an enemy and a teammate, is just an annoyance. A very, very, big annoyance...
rework kat was cool till they dumped the onhit effects onto her r. It doesn't match up with anything else in her kit and as long as they keep it, she will be impossible to balance.
i always felt her ult was too overloaded. the damage on three enemies is already nasty. then they add on hits and grievous wounds on top of it. why not give it lifesteal just for good measure?

I miss Voyboys tanky top Katarina way back when. That was hard to pull off and the only respectable way to see old Kat played.
Currently maining kat and it seems like a nightmare because 90% of matchups eat you alive and if you don't get ahead you're useless because you have no other utility but it's so fun to play her that i won't stop to be a kat main you need to be a masochist at least in the current seasons

I remember a game that i finished with 97 kills, i lost that game because the team was just trying to get me to 10 pentakills in one game at some point i finished with only 8 sadlly but the resets were just crazy and how simple it was to play her, it was the definition of smashing your head on the keyboard and getting a penta
Ps at high rank she wasnt that easy with her clear weaknesses but at low elo where players didny know how to deal with her she was just nutz

I only started playing after her rework and had 2 friends who main Kata and occasionally played her when I got her ARAM, and her strength increases the less organized a team is, like one of my friends made a penta with her in the first minute of an ARAM because the enemy team seemingly tried to become a single person, but the moment the enemy team stops hugging up to each other and you cant hit everyone with her daggers she starts to fall off. She is still very absueable in my eyes, like Im not the best player and can still look good on Kata, but she can also be easily stopped by something as simple as Singeds glue, and what I personally find very funny is how people who abuse her aggressively try to defend how much skill she takes while someone who mains her just admits how stupidly busted she can be.
Its takes skill to play a good Kata, I admit that, but it doesnt take skill to Kata at all.
Kat otp here. I really love these videos and was excited to finally see one about my favourite champ. I think what I like most about these videos are their unbiased look at champs throughout their lifetime. I remember being one of the first Kats on pbe in preseason 11 testing botrk kat and it was nice to walk thru memory lane. Ik people find this champ skillless when their mid runs it into her daggers levels 3-6 over and over. And tbh I thought the same thing when I picked her up in S9, but i think if you play just a few games on her you realize why she's only played by a few players (who only play her) her take on league is very unique, fun and rewarding. I've been struggling with her in the preseason but i think she's a major reason why i still play this game. There's nothing like the thrill of her strategy and execution she must take in team fights. One misinput is the difference between blowing up instantly or a 1v5 pentakill

As much as I hate her for her reseting abilities this is actually a great rework. It separates the high skilled katarina players from the low skilled ones. 💯

You have a few small details incorrect. For example, her splash art was changed before the original rework. i started playing in season 2 and she was already using the rework splash art but still used Killer Instinct as her W.

I want old katarina W back and the animation for the E. All the changes are amazing but there was so much satisfaction behind pressing sinister steel with the audio feedback, and the animation of teleporting with E. Now the E is more of just a fast dash with a strange animation that doesnt feel as snappy. Still one trick her tho

My memory of beta era LoL, was that you had to keep a CC up for the enemy Kat or you lost the team fight. But as long as Blitz for example kept his finger on the R key, she didn't do much. But then again, everyone was kinda new at the time, and I was certainly not playing with the cream of the crop.
I feel that the new blade retrieving version of Kat is a great design, that is somewhat tainted by point and click assassins that just do their damage instead of being reliant on someone stepping into a telegraphed red circle.
The ult is also a remnant of her old kit that revolved around it, now so much of the power budget is stripped from it that rooting yourself feels real bad for the damage that comes out of it. I am personally hoping that Riot can remake an ult for her that fits the high tempo bouncy mobility that the rest of the kit has now, maybe just placing a lot of daggers or something.
I miss S2 Kat :( so fluid and fun to play, obviously unfair for the enemy team, i think i got at least 10-15 pentakills in ranked S2 and S3.
I do think that Blue hair would look prettier on her, herce her Deathsworn skin is my favorite

Kata is by no means easy to play vs non iron elo players. Don't say:
She can oneshot people end game. This is what assasins do.
Her resets are op. Her resets are pretty good, making her damage output in a fight more consistant, or so she can exit the fight after killing prio targets. Like every other assasins can.
Her R does so much damage. The ap scaling on her R is less then Lux full combo, and takes a bit longer(2.5 full channel) and she needs to be on you for that whole time not getting cced. You can litterly just walk out of it. Lux can do it pretty safe while kata needs to dive inn.
Kata also needs to wait for the enemy to make a mistake(unless she has ult but they still need to walk up, or be low enough) or a ganks to acctaully do damage vs good players. Litterly just dont stand close enough to her if you are a mage or a adc without peel. unless you have dodges which makes kata useless as fuck, as all her damage is in her daggers, and ult.
Only good thing with her atm is that she applies on hit effects on R, E and daggers. Her damage feels alot more backloaded then most assasins. Unless really fed you useally have some room for counter play. Her being more "back loaded" and no invis or good engage makes her balanced cus she is an aoe assasin. If she had invis or or wall jump(like talon, not with daggers) she would be alot better. Sure she can jump on you from FOW Press E W Ult you and if you are playing a mage it might suck when she is fed, feeling like there is no counter play. But thats how its supposed to be, She is fed. and you didnt have vision. See her coming and she shouldnt be able to kill you( unless she has flash maybe) if she runs at you simply move away.
Kata does good cus people make mistakes, misposision, use and miss all their abilites, or get counterd by her. She useally dont win lane, her farming aint that great. She cant really trade or poke. She has no neutral game, unlike in my opinion other assians have, like zed, akali, fizz(maybe not), qianana.
I had the chance to play every version of katarina.
One thing to mention is that the very first katarina dealt A LOT of damage with shumpoo !
I don't really remember the effect on AA for the W. I don't remember it but I'm pretty sure it was shitty, like anti heal too. (for my 13years old ass that was shitty)
