    Can't go wrong with a Hellbringer, can get it with the cadet bonus straight away can do many builds and Omi's are a hell of alot cheaper than battlmechs.

    I’d avoid putting newbs in assaults as they tend to get primaried, are too slow to compensate for position planning mistakes, and their tonnage is wasted on someone who isn’t properly using it.

    • @kennethfharkin
      @kennethfharkin 3 года назад +13

      Exactly. To slow to correct when making a positional error and too juicy a target when spotted.

    • @thorveim1174
      @thorveim1174 2 года назад +7

      On the other hand, dont put newbs in light mechs either. There have a very high skill floor before you are effective in them and don't get annihilated in one volley. You gotta learn the flow of the game before jumping in a light.

      I would say stay away from mediums as a new player; they are either too slow or don’t carry enough weapons. I would rather play a light or heavy instead but do agree that new people should stay away from lights until they learn the game. Stick to heavy and some of the faster assaults as a new player.

    • @honeytaters9889
      @honeytaters9889 2 года назад +1

      Newbies shouldn't use heavy mechs because those have the best power and speed balance and should only be played by veterans.

  • @PerfectTangent
    @PerfectTangent 3 года назад +20

    I perversely stuck to mechs that I found hard to pilot effectively, and with limited weapons choices. When I first started I tried an assault and found that my lack of skill was too much of a liability to the team: I was wasting my tonnage. Eventually I settled on mastering the Commando and learned positioning and vertical mobility with a stealth Phoenix Hawk (with either a PPC or light gauss). Ultimately I found that I greatly enjoyed piloting rather than soaking damage and pretty much stuck with lights and mediums. I think new players should find a mech they like and stick with it while they're learning the game, but then I've never been one for min-maxing.

    • @RedEyedModok
      @RedEyedModok 3 года назад +6

      Commando was my first choice as well. Nothing as great a feeling as taking out an assault or Heavy with a light Mech.

    • @BowChickaHonkHonk1
      @BowChickaHonkHonk1 3 года назад +3

      If you're feeling perverse, I have a suggestion I want to share: ASN-27, MRM30+10, 4 tons ammo, 1 JJ, ECM. XL265. All crit slots and tonnage used.
      It's low heat and low damage so you take ALL the cooldown nodes and skip as many heat nodes as you can. Ignore structure, instead max speed tweak and almost all of kinetic burst + hand brake. Strikes and UAVs (again, ignoring heat management).
      Don't think of it as an assassin. Think of it as a Cicada with 300-450m weapons and ECM. But also 1 jj.
      I got an 800 damage game and 6 kills with it once, and I'm not even that great :D

      Mediums and lights are where it’s at. After all, “low tier is fun tier.”

  • @deanclark8783
    @deanclark8783 3 года назад +17

    Personally I agree with three of the four, but I'm in the camp that a new player shouldn't jump right into an assault mech. It's not that the Madcat and Blood Asp aren't really good mechs (they are), it's that they aren't as forgiving of positioning mistakes and I'm assuming a new player is going to make some mistakes. I'd give the final spot to the Hellbringer Laservomit build and suggest the Madcat or Blood Asp as a best second mech to a heavy mech pilot who after learning the map designs and battle flow wants to venture into assaults for more presence and firepower on the battlefield.
    I think a minimum mech speed of 81kph will help new players recover from their inevitable positioning mistakes and allow them to stay alive longer to learn more in a shorter amount of time.

    • @ShimmeringSword
      @ShimmeringSword 3 года назад +3

      Another alternative, considering they were recommending ballistic assaults, would be to recommend a heavy that can do similar. A lot of new players will struggle to properly play an energy mech with all that heat management. But a UAC heavy mech can have mobility, armor, and steady heat minimal DPS.

    • @deanclark8783
      @deanclark8783 3 года назад +1

      @@ShimmeringSword Yes, good point. I didn't mention a ballistic heavy because most of my ballistic heavies are inner sphere mechs that I think I would have struggled in had I started out with them. I'd encourage the route I took of leaning heavily on the medium mech class (and not being afraid of running away from a fight when outgunned) until the player becomes more confident of what he or she can and can't do on the battlefield, then chooses either heavier or lighter mechs to hide flaws or enhance parts of the game in which they excel. The Vulcans and Vapor Eagles are great starting mechs that are very versatile.

      100% agree about the Hellbringer Laservomit with ECM. I originally played MWO in 2013, rocking the Jenner, particularly fond of the JR7-F. When I returned to MWO 5 years later, the Jenner no longer a competitive mech. Based on a video from BlackHawkSC, I tried the Hellbringer. That was a solid choice.

      I'd generally agree but at 64.8 KPH the Blood Asp has the capability to relocate reasonably. In terms of the NASCAR tactics used so frequently that extra speed is noticeable.

    Despite being very good choices, I tend to gravitate my recomendations for new players towards mechs that are not on top of the meta. Mad cats mk II, Blood Asps and Veagles tend to be called by players as primary targets as quick as they see them. Also, there is the part where players may not know what they want to play and your first mech should provide some versatility, kind of like try what you like before moving on. For that reason I recommend Sun Spiders, those have high mounts, ECM, and can do direct fire or missiles very efficiently, those are good lurmers, good atm carriers, good ballistic and good ppc boats with ecm, all in one single mech. Also, they tend to draw less attention from the enemy.

    • @fiendishrabbit8259
      @fiendishrabbit8259 3 года назад +3

      My recommendation would be a Crab. They can splash damage so easily and they're so tough that nobody targets crabs first (as long as you try to make your legs a hard target), meanwhile they dish out so much laser damage.

    • @ghoulbuster1

    Bushwacker is really good startermech. Good Armor, many options with a good amount of firepower. For heavys Marauder, warhammer and Hellbringer are quit easy to learn and also with alot of options to test different playstyles. Mediums and heavys are in my opinion the best classes to start.

    When I started years ago, I picked the Jenner and Shadowhawk to start. This was back during the initial mastery/skill system that required you to master 3 variants of a chassis so I had a JR7-F, D, and K, and the SHD-2H, 2D2, and 2K. Due to the build variety of these mechs (having both energy, missile, and ballistic variants), it allowed me to realize that I LOVE dakka mechs, high mounts, and simple one/two-button builds.
    If I was to recommend just one chassis that can cover these multiple builds, it'd be the Warhammer. The only thing that it really doesn't cover well is missile boating, which honestly I think is a bit less forgiving anyways outside of boating ATMs/LRMs, which the VGL-3 can do. MRM can be done with the Catapult/Wolverine/Archer but the Cat/Archer have obvious weakpoints, and the Wolverine mounts are left-sided which is a detriment to an inevitable NASCAR. I haven't played Streak boats in forever so I can't give an opinion on that.

  • @KruxisV

    Surprised to see no one recommending the Linebacker-H 6MPL build. Fast, one button to fire, decently survivable, shield arms to encourage twisting, lasers are hitscan, decent mounts, and then you have omnipods to experiment with later if you want to. Very simple and effective build. Hellbringers are great as well, as others have said.

    My recommendation for newbies. Was Blood Asp A, as it may be a big investment. But it gives you a large machine, with good high hardpoints for peeking. As well as as a being an omni mech offering vesitility.
    JJs, for clifs, and CT ecm, for anti missile. Old school ran it as a quad ppc in the left torso, machingun(no ammo) right (to make a fake hardpoint so no one know which side is armed.) and all the heatsinks.
    Rapid Fire ppcs are Rude. 2 flamer mechs overheated while trying to melt this fridge on legs, and died of point blank PPC hate.
    It can be energy or AC boat, noting its versatility. Meening whatever updates come.. its covered.

    Been playing MWO for 9 years. I think the best new mech for a newb is a medium. I started on the Blackjack. There are several variants but they have high mounted weapons, can take jump jets, and have decent hit boxes. I still play one with an AC20 and two medium lasers. I now play lights (Flea and Locust) and mediums (Assassin, Blackjack and Viper). Lot more fun stalking lone missile boats than head to head slugfests... all my mechs are custom builds. I tune them as I go. After all these years, weapons, MC and money are not an issue so I swap out weapons and other equipment until I find something I like.

  • @Raythe
    @Raythe 2 года назад

    Alternative picks:
    1: Firestarter over wolfhound. Since the patches, performs better, has jumpjets, and has more flexible build options. A/K or even H.
    2: Bushwhacker. Great hitboxes, brawls, mid range, Decent speed and convergence. Very flexible hardpoint and build combos.
    3. Crab. specifically the 27B, 27SL (for jump jet maneuvering), or 27 for AMS support. take standard engine, and zombie your way through fights to more learning experience.
    4. Direwolf. specifically as an introduction to Omnimechs. if you can think it, the Direwolf can usually be built with it.

    Wow, this attracted some comments eh? I can't help but chime in, myself! Copy/pasting what I posted on Reddit:
    I'm really happy to see the VGL-1 get some love, as it's my favorite VGL. Though I prefer 2xLPL + 2xLRM15 + lightTAG (or 2xLPL + SRMs, or 2xLPL + just about anything really). Clan XL, can go fast, reasonably armored. It's a little big for its tonnage, but how much is that actually going to matter in tier 5? It's a great choice.
    The VL-5T is also an excellent choice. If you must run an IS XL, get it in a small, fast package that is hard to hit. The -5T is all of those things. I worry that newbies might be too cautious to really use and abuse the VT's mobility to maximum effect... but it's at least a reasonable bet.
    I wish I could say the same for the WLF-2. Though I love my WLF-2 (it's a just plain better version of my perennial favorite the CDA-2A), the fact is it has basically the same strengths as the VT, but more weaknesses. It's larger. It's doesn't have as waspy a waist as the VT. Yeah, it's significantly faster, but in tier 5 how many newbies are going to be able to hit a smaller mech going 115 kph vs a larger one going 130? The extra speed is not a significant advantage in tier 5, IMO.
    I agree with all the reasons the MCII-B is awesome. However, I would say that you need to give it to the right kind of newbie. Not everyone is a born Assault player. But for those who are the MCII-B is, well, probably the most meta mech in the entire game. Who doesn't like that? For a newbie I might toss one of those (ridiculous 2 ton weight) JJs and buff the engine up to a 350. But that's a minor quibble. The recommendation is solid one, even if the details might be slightly different.
    Overall, I am surprised to see how Lights and Assaults are now becoming more recommended for newbies, instead of the historically favored fast Heavies/durable Mediums. Very interesting. Is this a reflection of how the game meta has changed in the last two years? Would a newbie with the VT outperform a newbie with a boring old HBR, or Powerhouse, or 6xMPL+3xJJ LBK? I do not know...
    If anyone has given all of the above to newbies and asked them how they liked them, I would be very curious to know what was said. I have given the RGH-PH and LBK builds to one newbie, and he liked them - especially the -PH. But a sample size of 1 is awfully small!

  • @ratofnihm
    @ratofnihm 3 года назад +2

    HBR is a hell of a starter mech too. I would probably take it as a heavy over an assault, just because those high quality assaults get called out and focussed pretty hard even in the scrub tiers.

    I respect, but kinda disagree. I can't recommend lights or assualts in most cases. Concepts needed for their survival takes some learning. I think it is essential for a new player to find mechs that have great survivability while still being decently mobile with forgiving builds that offer one or two weapon groups. Things like bushwacker X1 with 2 UACs, EJag or Crab laser vomit, thunderbolts with laser vomit or laser vomit with backup missile system, or maybe Quickdraws with same philosophy. Most of these all offer bonuses to survivability with Jump Jets and/or ECM. Always recommend the hellbringers also that offer a great mech with high mounts that also offer a build any build option out the door as a "first mech" if selected.

Nothing will turn a new player off this game then getting popped early in games...nothing!!! Trying to tell a new player that they just need to get better at positioning to not get popped so early will make them run like for the hills like a biblical flood is coming. I love the mech choices, but would take light engines in the IS mechs and compromise some firepower. I did this for my uncle who was slow to get used to how to move and position in the game (and lets face it PGI's map walls that hang you up dont always help) having mechs that were a bit more robust helped him stay in games longer and work up slowly, but now he is averaging over 300 match scores and 400 damage on most games. Not too shaby

      The side torso hitboxes on a Wolfhound are miniscule, if you're playing an IS light mech you need every possible ton of weapons to be competitive. Also XL engines mean you are faster and need to fit fewer heat sinks - which gets you more weapons. Simple example - AC20 Urbanmech with STD60 vs XL100

  • @NoNamefree123

    I disagree with one thing. BAS is easier to disarm because whatever you do, your torso weapons are visible from every angle, no matter the distance to enemy. Many players will target those specific points and no amount of twisting and covering will save you. On the other hand in MKII you can twist your torso or just wiggle to spread the damage. In my experience, even with less armor / structure on MKII arms in comparison to BAS shoulders I can keep my weapons intact longer on Diamond Shark platform.

    I religiously recommend the roughneck or the cataphract
    theyre hilariously beefy for their weight class and they allow you to really get that stompy mech feel without being so huge and lumbering like an assault
    theyre still tough and stompy but smaller and so more forgiving for positioning mistakes, as well as cheaper

    If you had to pin me down to pick 4 mechs for a new player one in each weight class, I would list the Arctic Cheetah(light), Shadow Cat (or Arctic Wolf omni) (medium), Hellbringer (heavy), and Blood Asp(assault), with Hellbringer and Arctic Cheetah being my recommendation for first two to get.
    All of these mechs are Omni mechs which allows a new player the ability to experiment with different weapon types so they can sample a larger array of the game at a lower C-bill threshhold overall which I think is important as new players don't have a lot of C-bills to throw around after the first mech purchase or two. All of these mechs have good to above average profiles, save for perhaps the Blood Asp (but then almost no assaults have a small profile), and all of them have good to great weapon mount placements for their functions.
    They also all come with an ECM variant (which would be the one I recommend buying of each type) which can help provide some "training wheels" to new pilots as they learn how to use positioning on the map or within the main battlegroup. The ECM can help to cover mistakes a bit, buying them some time to hopefully make adjustments. Also Clan tech tends to be more flexible to out fit due to lighter weight, smaller components in general (especially heat sinks) so it's a bit easier to learn on. Anyhow, my 2 cents.

    • @ndr2q
      @ndr2q 3 года назад

      I know this is late - but I wouldn’t really recommend an Atlas as a beginner mech.
      I love the Atlas too, I’m a legendary founder and have played an Atlas since the beta. It can still work as a ‘tip of the spear’ tank or a brawler in an organized team, by torso twisting and using your giant arm hitboxes as shields, to protect your torso. But I think it suffers a LOT in PUG matches against newer, more heavily armed, and more slender assault mechs. It just doesn’t really have the hardpoints or the thin design/hitboxes that make modern meta mechs so good. The Atlas also IMO suffers a lot from the power creep of MWO, as one of the oldest mechs in the game, its limited hardpoints are outdated now, and it really isn’t particularly excellent at anything, other than soaking huge amounts of damage.
      I think the Atlas is just TOO big, too slow, and the giant wide boxy torso is too easy to focus fire. It’s also very hard to track fast targets with the torso weapons, but the new buffs to torso twist speed and max pitch should help.
      I think learning to play a Atlas really requires a lot of coordination and communication with your team and knowledge of the maps, to know when to push and where, and how to get the most out of your Atlas. You are also highly dependent on your team following you in, to capitalize on the giant distraction/wall you create for them. If your team doesn’t push, or starts NASCARing away, then you are likely to die without achieving much.
      For those reasons, I think it’s a pretty poor choice for beginners. Despite its iconic status and immense reputation in the fluff.

    I tend to agree with avoiding lights and assaults at first. They're unforgiving to new players for either a lack of armor or mobility. A medium or heavy, preferably with armor quirks, will allow a new player to get used to the mechanics and flow of the game without getting owned (and therefore frustrated) as often. Ditto for rotary autocannons or massed AC/2 builds that require face time with the enemy, as a new player will use that opportunity to sustain way more damage than they need to.
    The Vapor Eagle may be the best of all worlds, combining firepower and mobility, but there is something to be said about the tanky-ness of a roughneck or an orion.

    My number 1 and 2 mechs for new players are Catapult K-2 with 4ML and 2 AC-10's. The K2 is a super durable mech that has a low profile and is relatively nimble. It can dish out the damage and take abuse as well. The other is the Quickdraw 4G. MRM 30/40 with 3/4 ML. Super basic again. A durable mech with only two weapon groups to worry about. I have seen with new players that they tend to push in too deep and can't get out again. In Lights they die really fast because they don't yet know how to play the class and with Assaults they think you can stay all day and not die because I'm in an Assault right. The two heavies i mentioned are forgiving to players who may push in a little too deep. The whole point is to allow new players to stay alive long enough that they don't just quit the game because they die too fast. It doesn't take long to graduate out of those mech's and move into a more challenging class once you grasp the fundamentals.

    I have to admit, I just skipped through the video, but I find some of the mechs not being a good choice for _new_ players.
    VL-5T is one of my favorite mechs in the game, but the combo of running, jumping and twisting is something that new players find difficult. I had several new players in my unit trying them out and it took them quite a while to learn it and getting used to it.
    Light Mechs:
    new players should be carefull playing light mechs because you usually need a bit of understanding on what is going on. Harassing with wolfhounds is great, but only if you understand how your team and the enemy team is moving. I would maybe say "try a kitfox" if new players ask for an easy to play light mech. ECM, AMS, staying with the team, and omni mech for experimenting a bit, which makes it always a good choice for players who don't have that much cbills.
    Mad Cat mk2
    Not a bad choice, but the big advantage of this particular Dakka Mad Cat are the arm actuators, which is something new players usually don't feel comfortable with either. It might be a good mech to learn it I guess? Nevertheless, the ECM bloodasp is the better choice in my opinion.
    In general: new players do profit a bit more from ECM, because especially in the lower tiers the ECM confuses the enemy a lot. Thats just my experience from having a look at new players in my unit, but I think it is difficult to ask top players about good mechs for new players.

    Phil buddy, I respect you as a Mechwarrior, content creator and MWO influencer, however, these recommendations miss the mark completely, IMO. The No. 1 priority for a new MW is to get familiar with the game as fast as possible, add skill points and upgrade their PSR. Therefore, the emphasis for new MW mechs should be the following in no order: ECM, tankiness, damage output, supporting team roles for the outset. Therefore, no light or medium mechs. Always a preference for mechs with ECM and AMS if possible. The weapons that have the best chances for easy high damage potential are the MRM and LRM - I can hear the boo birds now. The easiest weapon to use is the laser - point and shoot (don't forget to trace). That said, I'd go with a Hellbringer (lasers and ECM), Catapult (LRMs and BAP), Marauder (MRMs) and Thanatos (ECM and AC10s). All other weapons take some learned skill to make effective. Add JJs and there is another variable of complexity. For now, I'd recommend JJs as a maneuvering item (get over rocks and cliffs), not an attack item (pop tarting). These 4 core mechs will satisfy the above criteria. Lights are specialty mechs, unique in play style. Assaults are for leading the charge, soaking up damage for the team and have minimal maneuverability. Both are too important in their roles within the team for noobs to pilot, IMO. Now, if we must have 1 of each, that's another matter. Lights need lasers and ECM, the Mediums should be fast and/or tanky with Streaks on it - Artic Cheetah or Hellspawn, although the Centurion is pretty stout - and the Assault would be a Marauder IIC - it is more defensive than a MC IIC and not as vulnerable. A new MW can add mechs and weapons as their skills improve - PPCs and UACs, eg. SRMs mean you have to get close. Another consideration is AMS which can really boost your match score, but you'd need 2 or more and there are not that many designs where you can get that and still fit within the above criteria. I'd also recommend that a new MW play every mech until they win, use earned skill points, then move to the next mech. Recycle when you get to the end of the hangar. I did not follow my own advice and had a dreadful time getting into the game. Finally RUclipsrs' recommendations helped me move forward. Lastly, don't you think the COVID beard is a bit cliché? LOL

    Fairly expensive builds though. It's going to take weeks if not months to earn the c-bills for these.

    new players should not be in assault mechs period the warhammer 6r, crab or bushwhacker and a urban mech r60 with 4 mg a large laser and a med laser, an archer 2r or 5s there all versatile and easy to play if you must have a clan mech get a mad dog b instead of the archer all the mechs you listed are good but for a new player they are difficult to use and could cause a new player to be discouraged

    Best 4 mechs for pro players is the adequat name of the video. New players with speedmachines that depend on twisting and posistioning??? New players are conserned with finding the way and aiming straight. Poptarding vapor eagle don't make me laugh or the lootpiniata MC Mk2??? Here is what you do as a new player
    Assault: Blood Asp B dakka ecm
    Heavy: Hellbringer Laservomit ecm
    Medium: Hunchback iic lrm
    Light: Arctic Cheetah mg,lasers ecm.
    After you learned everything you need on those chasis you can come back here and try out those mechs.
    You are welcome!

    There should have been the BASP uacs, because tier 3-4-5 are all blind and ECM means free farm.
    Also wolfhound is a weaker duplicate of the vulcan

      2erppc-3ac2
      2ppc-3uac5
      3uac5 1uac10
      That uac10 uac20 is just weak

      2xUAC/10, 1xUAC/20 is actually decent. Nobody wants an 80 pt double tap.

    I mean the video is two years old, and I love your content. I dont really agree with Vapor Eagle for new players. The complexity of throwing in jump jets, and honestly even as a veteran, ATMs are unwieldy. SRM, MRM, or LRM would be easier for a new player. The other Eagle build is fine. Sniping is a good recommendation for a new player.
