Feedback on my Sonic Textures sample pack has been amazing, thank you all! Get it HERE drewgrit.gumroad.com/l/sonictextures Also shoutout you guys for the birthday messages too!
Hahaha that’s funny, I love that. I hope it all clicks in your brain soon my friend but either way I’m glad you found it interesting. Thanks for the comment✌️
My favorite way to add texture recently has been to take a variety of water sounds such a the ambient sound of rivers, pouring a glass of water, etc, then running it through Portal. You get some absolutely beautiful sounds this way. To take it to the next level I'll layer pre portal water sounds and layer it with a long and continuous arp melody, then run that through the an instance of Portal together. Gives me chills every time, it literally sounds like an alien water god rubbing your brain.
That is an absolutely amazing idea! Every time I see someone use water in music production it always sounds cool but I’ve never heard anyone run it through portal. That’s genius honestly. I do plan on getting Portal sooner or later, it’s just expensive. You might have inspired me to pick it up ASAP haha thanks for the comment my friend✌️
Big time, easily one of the most important songs in my life. I remember it so clearly as a kid, being mind blown by these cartoons making wild genre bending music😂 hits me just as hard today, I’m glad you can relate my friend✌️
Hahaha true tbh, normally I’m more energetic but this time I was focused on firing through as many points as possible in a short space of time. Glad you enjoyed it my friend💪
I completely feel you dude! They really are top TOP tier. I know they are highly regarded but even still I don’t think they are given enough credit. Definitely the type of breakdowns that require a few watches to digest it all😂
@@octaviannicholas5532 the one that plays in the clip? It’s him just demonstrating pitching around chord one shots, don’t think it’s a full so as far as I’m aware✌️
@@octaviannicholas5532 It's not the one in the clip but check out January, What's In Your Head, or Holding On by Disclosure for examples, they are literally just minor 7th or 9th chords pitched around on the piano roll but sound so good
You not only taught me different tips and tricks on how to layer texures in sounds, but you also masterfully hid all of this in an ad to promote your sample back in a way which I am not angry AT ALL. Good stuff, I am invested.
Haha yea sort of dude, this is first time in nearly 2 years that I’ve tried to sell something on the channel. And essentially it’s had to happen, I’ve got thousands of subscribers waiting for a next video but im earning next to nothing from RUclips so I can’t commit and give people videos full time. Like my last video got 17k views and earned £39 dollars in Ad revenue😂😂 So now im trying to sell a pack to fund going full time, and yea you’re right it is integrated in with a video but I actually want people to realise that! If they don’t realise I have to earn in order to give them more videos then I can’t give them more videos!😂 We will see how it goes I guess, thanks for the comment my friend, glad you enjoyed the video✌️
So true dude, it is like another dimension, that’s why I love it so much and think it’s so important to think about on top of all the other things you mentioned. More people thinking about texture help them make better music, 100%. Thanks for the comment my friend✌️
As an engineer, I got educated to dislike distorsion. I wanted to always achieve the purest, most pristine audio quality. That was my challenge then. Only recently I discovered that distorsion was one of these dimensions (we can call it texture) that allows to stack sounds but keep them all well defined and separated. Stack two pure sounds together and they may interfere. Add texture/distorsion to one of them, and your ears will be able to keep it apart from the rest. It seems you are just starting with sound design, but are on the starting blocks! Keep the good work and wishing you success in your endeavours!
Definitely, that’s the beauty of it! Texture is a universal technique that can find home in any genre when applied correctly, sick to talk to a fellow producer on the same wavelength man🙏
Dude do it! Take this as a sign to get creative with producing again, even if it’s just a low key hobby💪 you’ll not regret it and feel free to send me again you make my friend✌️
damn thats sick to hear dude, thanks for letting me know! So glad that has opened doors for you, hopefully more techniques that will do the same coming soon my friend✌️
@@MusicByLIFE seems so obvious once you know haha but equally no shame in not twigging you can do it earlier than now, that’s just the way music production works💪
I just love that you use Tyler as the first shot when talking about producers. I know everyone knows he produces his stuff but I think it’s truly unappreciated how detailed and precise his production is. It’s amazing and I’m glad he’s getting that recognition he much so deserves
Couldn’t agree more my dude! He’s known as a producer but is still somehow underrated. His production is absolute top quality💪 glad we are on the same wavelength about him haha thanks for the comment my friend✌️
Agreed bro, it’s literally my favourite plugin in my arsenal right now so the fact it’s also free is hilarious😂 shoutout soundly for making it for real haha thanks for the comment my friend💪
I’m glad you stayed to the end too! Place It by Soundly is sickest plugin in my arsenal at the minute so I’m glad you’re getting to enjoy it as well haha thanks for the comment my friend✌️
That’s such a nice compliment, thank you my friend! I can’t make more guys like me appear on RUclips BUT what I can do is make more videos so hopefully that’s good enough😂 thanks again dude!
Funny enough I almost bought it last night😂 it’s on sale on plugin boutique but I decided not to pull the trigger yet, I’m just not sure I need it right now but will probably pick it up sooner or later. Thanks for the recommendation my friend💪
Hahaha I have to reply to the homies bro, I’m out here trying to build a community. A handsome community haha thanks for being a part of the gang bruh💪
Another beautiful video. Simple, to the point, no fluff. Well explained, with named plugins and broken down effects chains while giving examples from popular artists with interesting sounds. You are the peak of music production education. Keep it up, I cannot give you enough praise.
Ah dude this is an incredible compliment thank you so much. All of the above is exactly my targets when I make a video so that’s amazing feedback! I’m currently in a weird zone of trying to increase upload schedule but maintain the same standard. It’s just so time consuming but going to give it my best shot. Hopefully you enjoy those future videos too my friend💪
@@drewgrit_ do whatever you think is best for the content, honestly I would wait half a year for content of this quality. Whatever you feel is best for your process. Keep it up!
That’s very kind man thank you! But hopefully I won’t have to make you wait that long between videos haha hopefully I can find a balance soon. I believe it’s possible so we will see✌️
Sorry dude only seeing this comment now! But yea haha rare is a good way to put it😂 the issue is I have thousands of subscribers waiting for next video but earn very little from ad revenue. Last video which has 17k views earned £39 haha so in a situation of trying to make money by releasing this Sonic Textures sample pack in the hope that I can then commit to doing videos full time and meet the demand. We will have to wait and see I guess😂 thanks for the comment my friend and glad you enjoyed✌️
The disclosure sample baking trick fits the planed chords/single chord that gets shifted around so well. You can sample the whole thing when its all layered, they sampled bits from tracks like that in old house music etc. back when creating variety from your own synths wasnt so easy and cheap. The sky is the limit with texture, just rely on those ears.
Love this! “The sky is the limit with texture, just rely on your ears” is the best way to describe it ever. Wish I had said that myself. Thanks very much for the comment my friend💪
True actually yea, it has that vibe! Also if you like that there’s a bunch more in the pack with the same vibe you would enjoy. Check it out if you’re interested, thanks for the comments, real good music convo my friend💪
Thank you so much dude, that's one of my biggest aims with every video so I am glad you think that! Explaining stuff as straightforward as possible so that beginners understand is so important to me. Therefore more of the same coming soon my friend haha✌️
In almost every production video i've seen on youtube the dude is trying to sell me on his sample pack or serum bank etc.. but somehow you perfectly explained the concepts while subtly working in how your pack incorporates what you're explaining. Well done Drew, you got a sale and a subscriber.
Hahaha thank you so much dude this is a sick compliment😂 everybody on music production RUclips has to try sell packs or sprinkle sponsors in the videos to make money to do this full time so I get what you’re saying! But yea I was trying to present the categories of texture (which I think isn’t talked about enough in music prod) through the video but also like a body of work exploring my passion for these concepts through the pack. I really wanted to push the idea of texture out into the world, so it’s like a pack with a bigger purpose! That’s why a comment like this feels amazing, thank you my friend🙏 also I’m doing 20% off to celebrate 20,000 subs so get that while you can today! It’s only for 24 hours with code “20K” Enjoy dude and thanks again for this honestly, I owe you one💪💪
Your Audio Textural Integrity on the subject matter of texturising when producing is unequivocally A1 off the charts, detailed as fk. 🙌 Dope video. Damn so on point.Achievement Unlocked - Your making Braille Beats!!! BoOM 🤯
Damn dude thank you so much, this comment is so awesome, you've made my day for real! I put 3+ months of effort into this video and pack, texture is a complicated topic haha so a comment like this makes it all feel worth it. Thanks very much my friend, I owe you one💪
@@drewgrit_ Bro. Totally welcome. Like seriously I could totally tell your video was made in such a high level accurate way. I saved your video as I was like this is dope reference. Now following to and only just discovered you. Like this was perfect as I'm currently making Ableton racks so found your video massive help. Yeah man respect!
I really appreciate that bro and feel free to send me Ableton racks youve made, would be cool to check them out! I played around with making my own a while back. Its great fun💪
Sonic Differentiation is also a very important part to this. If everything is textured there won't be enough contrast. It's about taking all the types of texture in and making sure each elements has something different. Make sure you realise 'smooth/clean' is also a texture. Another really important thing to know is Found & Foley sounds can be used as a drum layer or replace the drum entirely. Like a tree branch being shaken or someone walking across gravel put it through Battery or Shaperbox etc. With distortions really study the different types like tube, Transistor, Magnetic Tape, Transformers, Bitcrush, Wavefolding, Wavetable... & how they effect sounds. Digital is easily best for pure textured sounds (under 5% wet digital distortion for less obvious effects), analog saturation types are better for denser, warmer & harder hitting sounds
Totally agree sonic differentiation is crucial! The reason I even made this video is because I hated the fact that most of the time I heard people talking about texture was one specific type. Which is tape saturation and don’t get me wrong I love the analog style tape sound but there’s so much more. Drum layers of foley is another great technique and worth exploring, I feel like I’ve heard it a lot over the past few years so I’m a little tired of it but still a great idea. Very insightful comment dude, good to have you as part of the conversation, thanks for the comment my friend✌️
@@drewgrit_ Cheers man! Yeah I've felt the same with there being a lack of info on this, thanks for shedding light on it for the average person. I've kinda become obsessed with the topic because it's the one thing that you always hear in music yet it never gets mentioned. Almost as if it's a pro producer thing & no one wants to share the secrets. There are bits and pieces I've found including the process of making Mezzanine where they would record drums to vinyl. The guy who helped produce it called Spike Stent had an interview with Sound on Sound (the 1999 one) and goes into great detail about his process & creative mixing. He talks about using guitar pedals, the mpc3000 & tape to achieve sonic differentiation. Really interesting read
@@drewgrit_ another topic that you could do a video on is Creative Convoultion. I've realised how great it can be for unique drum sounds. You can put texture foley IR's through a plugin like Audiothing - Fog Convolver to almost imprint the dry drum sound onto the foley texture itself. So it instantly volume shapes texture to the envelope of the drum sound as well as Frequency. Anything you can think of metal, glass, rock, water, will all change the timbre and texture of drum sounds. It's pretty crazy how powerful this technique can be if done well
Yoooo dude that’s mad you’ve mentioned Spike, the mix Engineer who taught me Studio production at university worked under Spike! So he talked about him and his techniques a lot haha I actually mention the engineer Stan Kybert in my PS1 video. His real name is Jan but Spike gave him the nickname Stan instead😂😂 so yea long story short, I’m a big fan on Stents work too, I’ll check out the vinyl idea ASAP!
I’ve actually spoke about creative convolution in my PS1 video as well, but you’re right there’s a lot of potential to make full dedicated videos that explore it in depth. Such a powerful technique, glad we are on the same page about it💪
Nice work. Also, if you record background noise, you can use a split to stems/separate to strip this sounds down even further, select what you like, or EQ the sounds and apply effects to each little bit the way you want.
Yea different genres work on different techniques but the exchange of techniques across genres is what pushes music forward! That’s what makes the music production community great. Another thing to think is people are at different stages In their journey, 3 years producing vs 20 producing is very different. So anyone making discoveries along their journey should be celebrated. More learning means better music (in theory) haha thanks for the comment my friend✌️
Have spent the last few days wondering what is it that my song currently on studio needs and it's THIS, THE TEXTURE. You read my mind with this video, thankyou so much mate
Yo yoooo that’s incredible dude, I love that. Sometimes you just need to see something to make your brain click into gear! Good luck with the studio and if you’re in need of texture my sample pack is a great utility box of texture to get you started, have a look at that if you’re interested💪 thanks for the comment my friend✌️
Thats awesome, I wasnt aware Decimort2 did that! Ive been curious about getting it for a while but havent pulled the trigger yet. Thanks for reminding me and giving me more reason to buy it😂
Great video and concept, I love how you broke down the topic of texture in a comprehensive and easy to understand way. I’ll be getting this sample pack and can’t wait to use it in my productions 🔥
Sick, thats awesome to have you onboard. And cool to talk to another gorillaz fan, they are easily one of my biggest inspirations. You are right though, they dont get enough of a shoutout even though they are very famous. I might make a full video on Gorillaz soon, thanks for the comment my friend✌️
hahaha thank you dude, im trying to take it seriously and commit to full time but need enough money to support the channel. So hopefully this sample pack helps that, ideally id like to get videos out every 2-3 weeks. Thanks for showing interest my friend✌️
Thank you very much, I try to keep my videos short and sweet so that they are digestible and don’t waste people’s time. Glad you enjoyed this one and hopefully you enjoy the other ones too, thanks for the comment my friend💪
Wow honestly I’ve been getting a bit bored of music producer content of just making beats and whatever but this is such a breath of fresh air 🧡 definitely gotta try experimenting with texture now
Dude thank you so much! Exactly why I started RUclips was to try bring a bit of fresh air to the music production side of YT. I totally get what you mean about “just making beats”, that’s why I chose to explore techniques instead. I feel like there’s more to be learned that way💪 glad you enjoyed and feel free to send me anything you make with the texture ideas, thanks for the comment my friend✌️
I was looking for more conceptual and abstract way to see things and this is the type of content I was looking for. There is this intuition between life experiences and music, there is a connection. This abtractness is what is responding with tangible language for us to associate
Hahaha this is the second time I’ve been called aitch on this video but nobody has ever said it before😂 maybe it’s the new camera angle idk haha either way I’m glad you enjoyed the video my friend✌️
I’m an idiot. I was meant to explain in the video that I called myself Drew Grit because I was always using the word Grit/Texture when producing. I feel like that’s my thing. My interpretation of musical texture is what I have to offer as a producer. In the same way that Decap has Knock and Timbaland has Bounce etc. That’s why I made this Sonic Textures sample pack as my first proper pack. Hope you guys like the samples, and even if you don’t pick up the pack, I hope you learnt something cool to try in your own music from the techniques in the video. Thanks everybody, Stay handsome✌
@@piroswat4685 that’s awesome my friend, glad you gained something from the techniques in the video. Feel free to send me any music you make with the info💪
Man, you're not an idiot - quite the reverse! I'm now like eight years into mixing. This was the first video I've watched from your channel, and it blew me away by the greatness of the content. More of that good stuff please!!!
Hahaha I hear you for sure. It’s been tough trying to work part time jobs and make videos full time. That’s why I’m trying to finally earn money from the channel with the sample pack so that I can spend more time making videos. The hope is videos every 2 weeks from now on, just depends on how this pack goes tbh. We will see I guess. Hopefully back asap my friend, thanks for the comment✌️
Love that dude, glad you found what you were looking for! When I had this video idea I checked out what was already on RUclips about texture in music production and I was honestly amazed at how little there was. There still was a couple good ones but in general there was still a lot to be said. That’s what I was aiming for with this video. Also thanks for the “goat” bit, too kind my friend😂
@@richiefloresgitg haha less mid is a win for sure😂 and that’s really cool that you consider yourself composer rather than producer, that’s sick dude. Keep it up✌️
Yo, I just wanted to take a sec to say how stoked I am to have found your RUclips channel. It's really rare that I find such in-depth videos about this particular genre of music and production. It's very obvious that you put a lot of time and effort into it. Keep up the good work, from a new sub
yo yooooo im stoked to have you onboard my friend! I see this channel more like a community and having people like yourself is exactly what I want haha thank you for appreciating the effort that ive put in to the channel and I promise I will be bringing more videos for you asap dude, pleasure connecting with you💪
I have to agree! It’s so good but also I think it’s that standard marketing tactic in the plugin world of giving away a plugin that definitely should be paid so that you get the company some exposure and also makes people think if that’s what you’re giving away for free then your paid stuff must be even more amazing! Thanks for the comment my friend✌️
Thats good to hear man, I really should pick it up soon. Definitely on my list of things to do asap. Thanks for letting me know it is actually worth it dude, much appreciated💪
Tons of resampling using saturators, distortions, eq, tape, preamp simulators, paralel comps, etc even puting an La2a without compressing you can get some vibe. But you need to do it lots of times, carefully until you start to feel harmonics floating around. My trick is to hear cars noise outside, if they seems to fit perfeclty the song, sound design is done hahah
Wow that’s interesting about the car noise, I love that idea haha also you’re so right about resampling! I think it’s the most powerful too in the world and truth be told a decent amount of producers don’t really experiment with it much. I honestly believe it’s the best way to level up as a producer. It unlocks the next level for sure. Thanks for the comment my friend✌️
Cheers mate. Great video, for those who are inclined to recording guitars with VSTs/midi drums, snare buzz (I use the free Plugin Boutique VST) is an awesome effect to add, makes things feel a lot more real, especially if you're going for older styles/sounds.
Glad you enjoyed the video! And very true, I absolutely love that snare buzz plugin from wavesfactory, it’s so useful exactly how you described. Thanks for the comment my friend💪
Hahahaha yesssss man thank you so much💪 this is literally what I set out to do when I make a video so seeing you repeat that back to me is confirming I’ve achieved what I set out to do! Glad you enjoyed and more coming soon my friend💪
Thanks very much, you might even be the first person that has pointed out I talked about different genres! That was very intentional so im glad you noticed haha variation is important💪 thanks for the comment my friend!
Thank you so much im glad you enjoyed it💪Also I have good news for you! Im doing 20% off the pack for the next 24 hours to celebrate 20k subscribers so its the perfect time to get it, enjoy my friend✌code is "20K"
i can't say for certain that i've used the _exact word_ "texture" at some point while describing music, but i've definitely used "chunky", "thin", "crunchy", "crispy", and "buttery", so i feel like we're on the same wavelength (no pun intended) hear (pun intended)
Definitely dude! That’s some of the subgenres of texture so we are definitely on the same wavelength. You’ve been textured up for so long without even realising😂 texture gang all day haha💪
Hahaha thank you so much! I really try cram as much good info into these videos as possible so I’m glad you’re enjoying it✌️ hopefully you enjoy info in the other videos too! Welcome to the channel my friend💪
Hahahah absolutely love that, brain explosion is a big compliment😂 and enjoy using the techniques in your music, feel free to link me any music you make with them. Would be sick to hear💪
Haha that’s interesting, I try to make the videos nice and casual so it feels less like a lesson in school and a bit more relaxed. Never considered it like this but that’s cool to hear😂😂 thanks for the comment my friend and welcome to the channel💪
The mkgee gig was fantastic but actually this video dropped before the mkgee album even came out and the gig was much later than that. But yea true mkgee definitely uses texture to define the aesthetic of his tracks. So much tape processing on that record especially. Thanks for the comment my friend🙏
Yeooooo indeed big man, NI forever💪😂😂 always love getting a comment like this because I know how class it feels to come across a video and hear our accent, because like it’s so rare obviously. Gives ye a sense of pride haha cheers for the comment mate💪
This is a fantastic video. From the editing, to the techniques, and the hiphop references. This is the level that I hope to achieve with my own content. 10/10
Thank you so much dude! I put so much thought and effort into everything you just said so hearing feedback of 10/10 is incredible💪 i owe you one and good luck with your content my friend✌️
Good to see ya back, don't know how you choose your subjects but texture is one of the least understood topics in the producer community. (at least from my experience on youtube) glad you shine a light on it. It can literally distinguish one artist from another
Hey Kayden thanks for the comment and it’s good to be back! I’ve literally spent months making this pack exploring texture and how I came up with the idea was literally just from thinking about what’s missing in the Producer community like you said. It felt natural to try get producers thinking about and incorporating texture in their music if I could. Hopefully it makes a difference but I guess we will have to wait and see😂
love the idea of the pyramid man! never thought of it that way. texture's always something that i have a lot of fun with in my music though. it's honestly one of my favorite parts haha. definitely brings everything together. anyway, great video as always dude!
I was quite proud of the pyramid description bro I can’t lie😂😂 and for sure you’ve been layering your music in tiers like that without thinking about it, your productions are top quality man✌️ i appreciate the support as always man, much love for real
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it! And that’s ok don’t worry, I feel supported either way, it’s the thought that counts😂 and yea definitely more videos coming for you soon my friend✌️
Wowwww thank you so much that’s an incredible compliment. I feel honoured😂 hopefully more videos you’ll like soon and if you’re enjoying this texture idea you might like the sample pack I’ve made exploring texture too. It’s took me 4 months to try capture all the different types of texture in a pack but I’m glad I did it! Thanks again for the comment my friend, has made my day✌️
No problem at all dude, I am to use stock plugins and free plugins so that the techniques in the videos are as accessible as possible. And then if i ever have to use a paid plugin i try my best to recommend a free alternative thats pretty close to the paid one. Glad you appreciate it my friend💪
Yea definitely dude, i used to do that a lot but it is the most basic way of achieving this sound so it can often sound basic if you get what I mean. After a while i realised theres a lot more that goes into replicating telephone/ speaker effects. Such as subtle distortion and saturation. But yea youre right, the way you described is a great starting point, thanks for the comment my friend✌️
Thank you so much dude! That’s exactly the two things I aim for with every video haha good info in as short amount of time as possible, to not waste people’s time💪 so I’m glad you see it that way, makes me feel like I’ve done it right haha thanks for the comment my friend✌️
Thanks dude feedback like this is amazing. My main difficulty when filming videos is trying to find the balance between “is this explanation too long? People might get bored and click off” and “is this explanation too short? Are people not going to understand because I’m not going into enough detail?” So hearing that it’s worked is amazing, much appreciated my friend✌️
Glad you enjoyed and I’m sure you’ll enjoy the plugins too, easily some of the most creative and enjoyable plugins I’ve used! And ayyyy shoutout Scotland, my Celtic cousins💪😂😂 thanks for the comment my friend!
Good stuff man. I really like using the MPC plugin air flavor pro. It offers a lot more features than just adding in textures like vinyl and tape and it let's you get super in depth fine tuning everything. My favorite way to add texture to all my beats!
Very true dude, Burial is the best of the best. I don’t know if youve seen guy called Hollow Ground Productions on RUclips? He’s sick and has like a 4 part series on making music like burial, definite good watching for anyone interested in learning about burial. Also you jogged my brain my mentioning disclosure and burial, I’m pretty sure in an old interview like 10 years ago they said they added vinyl crackle under their tunes to sound more dirty like burial, and I think that was the first time I heard of people intentionally adding noise like that! I think anyway, I could be remembering that wrong😂 either way thanks for the comment my friend✌️
on this topic, you might wanna check out this free plug-in called "Textures" made by Clark Audio. its cool because it can add layers of texture (categories like foley, mechanical, nature, soundscape, tape, vinyl) that react to the actual sounds of whatever tracks you put the plug-in on through the controls of the high/low pass, wow rate/depth, reverb which make it sound more organic and less static. worth checking out i think. anyway, another great video, please keep it up
I actually did try to get this plugin about 2 months ago but whenever I went on the website and put my email in, it never sent me a link to download it. Tried it a bunch of times but no luck😂 which is a shame because from what ive seen of the plugin, youre right, seems great! Ill try download it again soon, thanks for reminding me about it. I owe you one my friend💪
hahaha thank you very much dude, an accent and some music production techniques is all I have😂 glad you enjoy my only two strengths lol more of the same coming soon my friend✌️
This is called timbre. Everything you described here is timbre. Texture refers to how many musical elements there are in a piece of music and how they relate to each other. For example, you have melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic texture. So how many melodies there are, how they interact with each other, how close they are in pitch, how high or low they are. This is how you describe melodic texture. With harmonic texture, you might refer to whether the chords are playing together, or arpeggiated, or you could refer to how rich the chords are (just an interval or an extended 13th chord or something), or how spread out the notes are. With rhythmic texture, that's stuff like how the different textural elements intertwine with each other, polyrhythms and polymeters being a good example, or maybe something like beat music from the 60s where everything almost always lands on the pulse. Texture is how all the parts interact with each other and what they're doing. You're talking about some interesting stuff here that's useful to think about, and I get why you used the term texture, it sounds like it's the right term for this. But it's not, and this could cause confusion for anyone who's trying to learn about theory/production.
I love this type of conversation, thanks so much for the comment. This is the type of topic I would love to respond to in video form because it would be much easier to explain with speaking rather than typing but I will try my best. You are right my friend, that is timbre and timbre is a word that I LOVED until I spent more time in production spaces and realised a lot of modern producers arent using these classic music theory terms. Music production has built up its own lexicon of description words and phrases. Which is perfectly fine, all language grows and changes definition. And if you think about the definitions of timbre, texture and tone. They were decided a long time before recording studios and DAWs. Music production is allowed to pave its own path for how it describes things. But yea you’re right in an ideal world it would all line up but in this scenario people have to learn that they can mean different things depending on the context. Also in terms of confusion I dont really think that will be a problem. What is more important is that people have had light bulb moments watching this video when I described things such as “speaker texture” because it is far more self explanatory and easier to digest. I could have said speaker timbre, digital timbre, vinyl timbre, tape timbre, atmosphere timbre but I dont think as many people would have had that light bulb moment. Plus producers are not using timbre in that context, I have never heard “cassette timbre” said by any producer ever. And better yet, I think that there is argument for saying my use of texture does match the music theory definition. As you said, the definition of texture “refers to how many musical elements there are in a piece of music and how they relate to each other”. My tape texture refers to how the technology relates to the instrument with the argument being the cassette player is an instrument too. The idea of the “the recording studio as a musical instrument” has been explored by many people in the literature of music production. The line betweeen instrument and technology is blurry so really the problem of timbre versus texture lies within what an individual person defines as an instrument. But I do hear you 100% Also I think tone and texture has remained more relevant because they are more obvious in definition/ self explanatory whereas timbre isn’t as clear for just hearing the word. Even the pronunciation problem hurts it widespread use, the last 5 times I have heard people say it, each has had a different pronunciation. Such a simple factor but I do think it contributes to why not as many people use it anymore. Anyway I hope you read through all that instead of just jumping to the end and typing a response without reading. I really tried my best to write a good response haha Thanks again for the comment, intelligent music conversations like this are the best. I have really enjoyed this. Feel free to reply and I will hopefully get back to you soon my friend!
good video edit: finished the video after commenting this, very good video you don't bullshit and i have like 20 plugins and concepts to fuck around with. thank u brother.
Thanks dude, thats exactly what I aim for so thats sick you noticed that! My theory is as little plugins as possible to achieve a sound and try my best to use either stock plugins or free plugins. Its a win win because it challenges me to produce with minimal tools and makes it simple as possible for viewers. Actually so happy you noticed😂 thanks for the comment my friend💪
great approach to the modern age of music-making and the plethora of stuff that comes with it. setting boundaries helps so much with creativity. looking forward to more videos@@drewgrit_
Big time dude, limitations definitely lead to creativity! I’m a big believer in that so it’s good to chat to someone else on the same wavelength. Until next time my man✌️

@@0box0man0 😂😂😂😂 well I’m happy it blew your mind even if you were confused dude💪
Pretty straightforward. 🤷🏽♂️
You might have inspired me to pick it up ASAP haha thanks for the comment my friend✌️
fine I'll get portal jeeez

You not only taught me different tips and tricks on how to layer texures in sounds, but you also masterfully hid all of this in an ad to promote your sample back in a way which I am not angry AT ALL. Good stuff, I am invested.
Haha yea sort of dude, this is first time in nearly 2 years that I’ve tried to sell something on the channel. And essentially it’s had to happen, I’ve got thousands of subscribers waiting for a next video but im earning next to nothing from RUclips so I can’t commit and give people videos full time.
Like my last video got 17k views and earned £39 dollars in Ad revenue😂😂
So now im trying to sell a pack to fund going full time, and yea you’re right it is integrated in with a video but I actually want people to realise that! If they don’t realise I have to earn in order to give them more videos then I can’t give them more videos!😂
We will see how it goes I guess, thanks for the comment my friend, glad you enjoyed the video✌️
instant sub man loved this video and the way you broke it down
Thanks dude, welcome to the channel! More videos you will hopefully enjoy too coming soon✌️
Texture is key to add a new dimension along other more straightforward ones (levels, pitch/frequency, panning, ...) - very nice wrap-up! Well done!
I love the wide application of this principle. It's applicable for everything from house to trap to dubstep.
Definitely, that’s the beauty of it! Texture is a universal technique that can find home in any genre when applied correctly, sick to talk to a fellow producer on the same wavelength man🙏
i stopped producing a couple years ago this video randomly popped up in my feed and lowkey convinced me to try it out again

When you brought out the Zoom SampleTrack, that first Chord was like instant Discovery-Era Daft Punk. That was the coolest thing.

So he talked about him and his techniques a lot haha
I actually mention the engineer Stan Kybert in my PS1 video.
Such a powerful technique, glad we are on the same page about it💪
That soundly place it plugin is a GEM 😮😮😮😮
Honestly one of the best plugins I’ve ever used and that includes paid plugins, it tops the charts and it’s free haha have fun playing with it dude💪
Nice work.
Also, if you record background noise, you can use a split to stems/separate to strip this sounds down even further, select what you like, or EQ the sounds and apply effects to each little bit the way you want.
very true dude thats a good tip, thanks for contributing that to the texture conversation my friend✌️
I love seeing beat producers getting excited about simple things that are essentials/nothing special in another electronic music genres.

Hopefully it makes a difference but I guess we will have to wait and see😂
@@drewgrit_ I'm sure it will, or at the least the contribution has been made already right ;)
love the idea of the pyramid man! never thought of it that way. texture's always something that i have a lot of fun with in my music though. it's honestly one of my favorite parts haha. definitely brings everything together. anyway, great video as always dude!
I was quite proud of the pyramid description bro I can’t lie😂😂 and for sure you’ve been layering your music in tiers like that without thinking about it, your productions are top quality man✌️ i appreciate the support as always man, much love for real
Dope video, real insightful
thanks dude, im trying my best to showcase sick techniques for people to play with so im glad you enjoyed it my friend✌️
feedback is always over looked!
love recording guitar feedback :)
another sick video thanks man
That’s very true, i totally agree! Feedback can be very cool and thank you very much my friend💪
These are the best free plugin tips ever!
Thanks so much my friend! Glad you enjoyed them and have fun playing with the plugins💪
love this vid man, if i had the money id buy ur pack, keep making vidss pls!
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it! And that’s ok don’t worry, I feel supported either way, it’s the thought that counts😂 and yea definitely more videos coming for you soon my friend✌️
Great video, man! Thanks for all the tips
Hey no problem at all dude, im glad you enjoyed the techniques! More coming soon my friend✌️
Quality content Bro 🔥
Thanks dude, trying my best so that means a lot! More quality vids on the way soon, hopefully you’ll enjoy them too✌️
5 minutes of pure gold 🙌🏽
ayyyyy thank you so much, thats an incredible compliment. I really appreciate that my friend💪
Idk how I haven’t found you already but this is one of the more interesting production videos I’ve found in like a decade lol, good job dude.
Thanks again for the comment my friend, has made my day✌️
Thank you for mentioning mostly free plugins ⚔️♥️
No problem at all dude, I am to use stock plugins and free plugins so that the techniques in the videos are as accessible as possible. And then if i ever have to use a paid plugin i try my best to recommend a free alternative thats pretty close to the paid one. Glad you appreciate it my friend💪
You don’t need a whole vst for a mic effect. Just use EQ - cut high/low totally and boost mids.
One of the best informative videos that i seen in a while Straight to the point.
Thank you so much dude! That’s exactly the two things I aim for with every video haha good info in as short amount of time as possible, to not waste people’s time💪 so I’m glad you see it that way, makes me feel like I’ve done it right haha thanks for the comment my friend✌️
simple and straight to the point thx for the tutorial man these techniques are so good
Thanks dude feedback like this is amazing. My main difficulty when filming videos is trying to find the balance between “is this explanation too long? People might get bored and click off” and “is this explanation too short? Are people not going to understand because I’m not going into enough detail?”
So hearing that it’s worked is amazing, much appreciated my friend✌️
I have been waiting for a channel like this
Damn thanks dude, glad I’m fulfilling that search for haha more videos coming soon my friend💪
Great Video Man! Very informative. Loved it! 🤘🏻
Informative is my goal so thats good to hear. Thanks for the comment my friend💪
Of course! @@drewgrit_ 🤘🏻
that place it plugin.. damn. downloaded it right away lol
Definitely dude! It so cool its unbelievable haha feel free to send me anything you make with it my friend💪
Awesome vid, thanks so much for the heads up on the free plugins! Love from Scotland ❤
Glad you enjoyed and I’m sure you’ll enjoy the plugins too, easily some of the most creative and enjoyable plugins I’ve used! And ayyyy shoutout Scotland, my Celtic cousins💪😂😂 thanks for the comment my friend!
@drewgrit_ Top man- all the best!
Good stuff man. I really like using the MPC plugin air flavor pro. It offers a lot more features than just adding in textures like vinyl and tape and it let's you get super in depth fine tuning everything. My favorite way to add texture to all my beats!
Oooooo very interesting, I’ve not heard of this. Sounds really sick, I’ll check it out asap my friend, thanks for the recommendation🙏
Yeah man, love this! Disclosure are openly inspired by burial but I'm sure many others are too. Highly recommend anyone and everyone checks out burial
@@drewgrit_ haha no problem. if there's a way you wanna tell me to, i'd send it your way
Good idea actually! I’ll try again and if that doesn’t work I’ll get back to you, cheers dude💪
alright, gotta download some plugins
Hahaha damn right dude, those mentioned are easily some of my favourite plugins, enjoy my friend✌️
Came here for the iconic accent; left with a wealth of knowledge 🙏
hahaha thank you very much dude, an accent and some music production techniques is all I have😂 glad you enjoy my only two strengths lol more of the same coming soon my friend✌️
Awesome advice Drew! I’ll be sure to try some of this out 😊
Thanks very much my friend, glad you enjoyed. Plus feel free to send me anything you make with the techniques, would be sick to hear✌️
But I do hear you 100%
Also I think tone and texture has remained more relevant because they are more obvious in definition/ self explanatory whereas timbre isn’t as clear for just hearing the word.
I really tried my best to write a good response haha
Thanks again for the comment, intelligent music conversations like this are the best.
Until next time my man✌️
Awesome video super information dense. Definitely going to be applying these lessons to my current project
Thank you dude and I love that, definitely link me the song when it’s done, would be sick to hear it my friend💪
Amazing video! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Thanks very much! Sharing knowledge amongst each other is what the producer community is all about. That’s why I love it so much. More vids and techniques coming soon my friend💪
Wow I've never understood this better as a beginner thank you so much this realization blew my mind
Damn that’s amazing to hear! I’m so glad it connected the dots for you and good luck in your journey of music production my friend💪 hit me up anytime if you have any questions

Thank you dude, I always aim to give good info in as short as time as possible! No point wasting people’s time in my opinion haha i appreciate the comment my friend💪
It’s your accent bro. It makes whatever it is interesting.
