My memory says to me that the truce started in 1914 because the soldiers in the German trenches were on Christmas Eve sang "Stille Nacht" which the British soldiers recognized as "Silent Night" and they sang together in the silence.

This was made possible because "the cannons went silent". Due to extremely wet weather both parties were having problems to get shells to the artillery positions.

Yes Hannes their drummer almost got blown up by the grenade ( Not a real one lol ) Is the husband of Floor Jansen. He's a really good drummer and great father to their two children. Floor added her dramatic vocals at the end credits.

Yes this did happen - watch the Sabaton history episode as there are letters and journal entries that are heavily featured.
At your leisure, check the live version, it's so emotional.
The aria is performed the Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen

First off, Great reaction as usual.
sabaton craming more storytelling and substance in a few minutes than many full sized Holywood productions... they tackle PTSD, horrors of war, brotherhood, historical events...

Like always, Pope and Patriarchs asked for a Christmas seize fire. But the political leaders didn't want it, they hoped the war would be over in a few weeks, but it already lasted four months, so wanted to continue no matter what. But in the trenches the soldiers obeyed the calls to seize fire. This spread all along the front. While the shooting stopped, they could hear each other, celebrating Christmas, relaxing, laughing, singing Christmas songs. Where the trenches were very close (sometimes only twenty feet apart) they started to sing together, came out of the trenches and met each other. Even football games were organized. This happened on several place along the front line.
Military leadership had big trouble to get the men fighting again.
Warfare changed a lot in the last centuries, WWI was the first in extended trenches, gas attacks, and a front that got stuck in one line without moving much, only massacre on both sides for years.

True story, as always with Sabaton. A series of widespread unofficial ceasefires indeed happened during WWI around Christmas 1914.

    How The Christmas Truce started:
Late on Christmas Eve 1914, men of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) heard German troops in the trenches opposite them singing carols and patriotic songs and saw lanterns and small fir trees along their trenches. Messages began to be shouted between the trenches.

This truce wasn't something that was ordered from above in fact it was a spontaneous act. The German soldiers began singing carols which was heard by the British and French soldiers who also began singing. Yes did play football/soccer and exchanged gifts and ate and drank. After the truce many soldiers on both sides refused go back and fight which is very understandable. However it wasn't popular among the commanders in fact some actually got executed for disobeying orders...

Sadly, I believe that we lack the humanity for anything like this to ever happen again😪
One of my favorite Sabaton songs.
I realize that You Tube sometimes blinds you to comments with links so I will second anothers suggestion of Nanowar of Steel "Valhalleluja" A Christmas classic as we all know Santa came out of legends of Odin.🤘❤️‍🔥🤘
And Viking longboats were put together with wooden pegs that could be unassembled for portage and reassembled once again on the other side.
    🥰🥰Much love from a Canadian Dear🇨🇦

True story. The most iconic football game in History. There is a cross still in place right there where it happened.
How sad that a man of your agedoesnt know about this. I learned it in 5th grade,in school and I'm 70 now.
MARRY CHRISTMAS TO THOSE WHO WERE THERE.

I don't think anybody has said it yet ... Her Highness, Floor Jansen, sang the end credit vocals. Hannes -- the concussed blond soldier -- is Hannes van Dahl, who is Sabaton's drummer. Floor Jansen is his wife. ••• PEACES!!!

It's very hard to understand how difficult it must have been to continue the battle after this truce. I heard once that people purposefully tried to miss the shots, because killing others is not normal to people. I don't remember if it was about this war of some other battles, but surely it can be almost any older battle, where you saw the opposite soldiers.
This song and video are so powerfull.

During WWI it's reckoned that only a small percentage of soldiers actually killed anyone else. After the Christmas Truce in particular, the soldiers were moved about on the front line because they wouldn't shoot straight at each other.

A great parody metal song featuring a Christmas / Odin mashup. Hilarious.

I told this in another reaction of Christmas Truce. I say it again. Christians have sth you can't take away or make us not believe. We have the strength of forgivnes. You can intimidate us but you can't never, ever, take away our believe of forgivnes. That's why the muslims hate us so much. Because we have God on our side. Don't forget! / Micke P
