Late on Christmas Eve,1914, men of the British soldiers heard German troops in the trenches opposite them singing carols and patriotic songs and saw lanterns and small fir trees along their trenches. Messages began to be shouted between the trenches. The following day, British,French and German soldiers met in no man's land and exchanged gifts, took photographs and some played impromptu games of football. They also buried casualties and repaired trenches and dugouts. The truce lasted for two days. When their superiors found out, they sent some soldiers away to other places, some ran to not have to fight any longer. The rest were shot right there and then for refusing orders to fight against those they had made friends with.
I don't think you realised that it was Floor Jansen who sang the outro at the end credits. She is of course the wife of Hannes!! ( de drummer van Sabaton ).
I said it before you migrated this over and I'll say it again. You gave this the perspective of somebody who's been there and done that. Not a lot of reacters do or can. Thanks very much for getting it and sharing it. If soldiers in one if the most brutal wars in history could set aside their differences why can't we? Thank you for this reaction, and your service!
Had a neighbor when I was very young, who lived just down the block. Mr. Bartholomew was a WW1 veteran and had been in battles like Vimy Ridge with the Canadian Army. He smoked a pipe with a stem made from bullet brass from that battle. He said that even then, all those years later, he still saw it all in his memory. What had been seen, could not be unseen. He was a kind and friendly old gent, and I count myself fortunate to have experienced his presence.
If in one trench "Stille Nacht" is song and less than fifty feet away the horrible enemy starts to sing "Silent Night" in their trench, while distant church bells call the people of the village to church...
The valkyries that came to collect the souls that day, looked in amazement, that there where so few to collect. They then sang a song in stead. (cue: Floor Jansen: 'Aha! ah aha ahaha ahahaha.. aha a ha aha.. ha!')
You were actually correct. A lot of soldiers in the western front had a lot of trouble fighting the next day. Because they realised the soldiers they were fighting were not the monsters they were made out to be and they actually had way more in common with them than not.
A lot of these soldiers didn't go back. They couldn't. They had to be transferred to other battlefields, other units. And armies, from both sides, made sure no other truce happened. And as this was the first year of war, people still had space to join together, the longer the suffering, the less they could. At least this is what I understand. Still, a beautiful time in a painful but Great War.
This truce wasn't authorized by the military command on either side in fact it was a spontaneous act where the German soldiers took the initiative. After the truce many soldiers on both side refused to go back fighting which is very understandable. However it was far from popular among the leaders and some were even executed for not obeying orders.
maybe y already know this info: This is a true event that occurred e occurred on and around Christmas Day 1914, when both side stop the sounds of rifles and shells exploding faded, in a number of places along the Western Front during World War I. In favor of holiday celebrations, during the unofficial ceasefire, soldiers on both sides of the conflict emerged from the trenches and shared gestures of goodwill. They share foods, wine, picture, cloaks, their life before the war and burry the fallen soldier. And like in the MV has showed, some where on the frontline even have a small football match. The saddest part is they end up shooting at each other in the next morning :((
and later in the war all soldiers which were there become order to move to very dangerous parts of frontline with high deathrate. Because the Leadership doesn´t want such situations.
Way late to the part but never too late to find a masterpiece. Not one to buy fangirl merch but I immediately ordered a "Christmas Truce" tee. Wore it Xmas in spite of cold weather. Perfectly said.
reat Reaction, for more on this topic there is a decent movie (2005) "Joyeux Noel" (Merry Christmas) shows the German, French & British (well a Scottish unit) , sadly when word of these events got out many units were punished and relocated to other sections of the line were the fighting was more savage. and then they made sure on holidays they would launch attacks and such. but the war took a turn and got more deadly esp once GAS started to be used in 1915 some soldier tried to repeat the event of 1914 but were shot .
Aah! The Kakhi Chums cross and the big Christmas truce in St. Yvon - Ypres Belgium West Front in 24 th of December 1914 ! Massive momment ... Heroic ! Sabbaton did their Christmas miracle ... Great successors of Iron Maiden !
What an AMAZING 🌟CHRISTMAS🌟 Song by SABATON. The lyrics and the MUSIC inspire You. And the Video, Unbelievable. It's also a piece of History. You can learn a lot. It's very...... EMOTIONAL 😢😭 And at the end the Voice of FLOOR JANSEN, makes it extra Beautiful... 💫 This a Gift for Christmas. ☃️🎄🕊️ We are all..... We are all..... We are all..... We are all..... FRIENDS🤝🤝 For Me The CHRISTMAS SONG of the Year 2021...💫 A little PEACE 🕊 and LOVE ❤️ for Everyone 🌹 WARS are TERRIBLE... Let's all think a little bit about 🌟 CHRISTMAS TRUCE🌟 during the CHRISTMAS Season, this is so often FORGOTTEN!!!! I love your beautiful words. You know what you're 🌟💫 talking about. Thank You this was AMAZING. Love and Peace 🕊 🇳🇱🙋🏼♀️
Great reaction man!!! Your take and understanding of the real story, and the conflicted feelings that must have been are greatly appreciated! As to the song itself, well, Sabaton worked some absolute magic on this one, far beyond the visual production value. The thematic elements - with plays on other melodies - are astounding. Each note, sound, and drum hit was obviously carefully considered. Art. Plain and simple.
Late to the party but I only just recently heard this song. Your reacton brought tears to my eyes, because obviouly as a veteran you can relate to this story. Too bad everyday can't be Christmas wherever there is war. I turn this song up so loud when I listen to it because there is so much truth to this story.
I have no experience with war, thankfully, why can't we just talk shit out. Violence doesn't solve anything, never did, never will. And yes, I have respect for the soldiers, and I like to hear the stories and watch the movies. But I don't understand it, I always come back to the question: Why couldn't they talk it out? Naïve I know, sheltered for sure. Just thankful I have never had to experience it for sure
Sir your reaction to Christmas Truce was incredible and very moving. I love listening to military veterans in my country England. But to hear you talking about being in the American military and you opening up about what you and other veterans saw and know as someone who never served, is very humbling and emotional. I know that you was in the U.S Marines as I have seen many reaction videos on my favourite band Sabaton from many you tubers who react to videos and have there own site. Sir take care of yourself and please stay safe. Much love and respect to you Sir. British Sabaton Fan 💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🏴🇺🇸🇺🇸
Fu... you brother. Your face, your eyes, your words speak the language of love. Great reaction. Greetings from Germany. Even if my "English" isn't good. All the best for U and your family.
How many people did it take to create this... I can see Floor Jansen being asked to sing the outro, and someone thinking about the credits and saying "you'll have plenty of time".
This will sound crass, but, the first guy outta the trench either had the biggest balls in history, or, was so mentally gone he said screw it. I wouldn't have been first. No way in hell. I mighta been 452nd. I know the piano regrets leaving. RIP Wagner piano.
1:54 Black Sabbath - Warpigs ( 1970) ! ...they understood it already...and not the crappy "girl with the cloth""official video, which it isn't..it is clickbait

I have a stupid question... are you allowed to talk about your seven years overseas? We were a specially trained group of 19 people (not for the us), we were not allowed to have dogtags or any other identifying item on us. To this day we're not allowed to talk and it's consuming the few of us that are still alive... Are you allowed to talk?

As a fellow veteran can I just say you are the first reactor to get the real story depicted here. Thank you.

Full body chills when the piano starts and when Floor sings the outro.

Also congrats on letting the credits play. As others have said that's the one and only Floor Jansen singing.

FLOOR was doing the singing in the end credits
So that's why the credits showed "Floor manager'! (I'll show myself out)
@@Bartjo32 Hannes surely?😝
Sabaton - we need someone who can sing a majestic/ soprano outro during the credits .
Hannes - i know someone
let the message be carried over throughout all the "christmas truce" reactions ;D

I've read somewhere in other comment section that the soldiers involved couldn't go back to battle each other and got moved to another division
and later in the war all soldiers which were there become order to move to very dangerous parts of frontline with high deathrate. Because the Leadership doesn´t want such situations.
@@spacepsycho6612 that's awful 😞

All true , the cross is still there in the fields of Ypres France
1:50 the piano plays a downward version of "Carol of the Bells"
Thanks mate, it brought me back to the Paschendale cemetery I visited in 2020. I just sat there in silence and cried
I stumbled on your channel a few months back... gotta say I think you are a very educated person. Thx for your input 👍

Sabaton 🥰🤘🤘🤘 This song hits hard 😭
The visuals kinda really happened during WWI, at Christmas opposing sides played soccer together.
Give credit for all the trench builders! What a production, eh?
This will be the next #1 Christmas carol from now on!
Another powerfull song, it makes me cry like no tomorrow. What a masterpiece.
You are very good at what you do. Thank you!
