- The new next generation Xbox Console is in the works and might even be revealed officially later this year. Microsoft is now changing tact and considering going down the Nintendo Switch route with a hybrid console but one that will also represent the largest technical leap in a generation. How will this even work? Is Microsoft on to a winner here?

"Biggest technical leap". I really believe MS is about to put out hardware that has a dedicated smaller A.I. chip that works with the BIG A.I. Azure or Colbat cloud chips they just installed in their servers to stream assets to the local hardware just the same way cloud compute works with Microsoft Flight Sim. If this is the case, it's not gonna matter how powerful the PS6 will be 2 yrs later because cloud assist will always be more capable.

@TheNivektube Your trolling needs work. That's old cloud. MS didn't install their new A.I. chips until late Fall 2023. They're getting ready for the future. Besides, Flight Sim wouldn't run on either console without cloud streaming. Try to get a clue.

again, for the 100th time, we are waiting on 1st quarter financials, but in the 4th quarter, Xbox kicked the holy shit out of Playstation. 7 billion dollar profit to a tiny 237 million profit. consoles don't matter. Profit however does, and Xbox makes a whole lot of it.

Great video, Gaz. The hybrid approach would be amazing; though I am primarily a PC user, I must admit I absolutely love my Nintendo Switch. Over the last few years, the Switch has felt a bit dated. (The games are brilliant, but look a bit yucky, IMO) - A hybrid device with the Game Pass library would be an absolute game changer for Xbox. I'm kinda bored of the whole Next Gen = Better Graphics and a slightly better controller. I would love to see Xbox take some risks.
Yeah same here; something more distinct from Xbox that takes risks is something we should welcome.
I like the idea of Xbox allowing other storefronts on their consoles, especially Steam. Not sure how it would make sense from a business perspective (Rand pointed out some concerns on the XB2 podcast lately). But if they could pull it off, I think it would absolutely huge for gamers. It would make me truly excited to own an Xbox alongside a PlayStation. Xbox would become the obvious console of choice for fans of indie games.
In terms of things that would differentiate Xbox from PlayStation, that is the most exciting idea I have heard.

A console generation used to be around 5 years until the PS3 and 360 made it longer. Nothing wrong with a 5 year hardware cycle, tech moves fast and if you have forward compatibility then really all we're talking about is more of the PC market but with small form factors you'd call a console. They can do a handheld now and also a new console in 2026, there's your multiple SKU plan. Hell, maybe you go full hybrid and put a eGPU in the dock that you sell on it's own.

I guess an approach could be to release a dockable handheld which gives the low-mid tier experience on the TV when docked (like the series S), and maybe a more powerful console like the Series X.

Most of us buy a new phone every 2-3 years so they will most likely also buy a console-upgrade every couple of years if it was available. Console generations are too long in my opinion.
At that point though it would be FAR more cost effective just to buy a PC. I don't think most consumers would bite, and phones are on cheap contracts.
Couldn't have put it better.. Xbox has unofficially become the market leader.. So what would a yet to be publicly understood market leader do?.. Lead.. Lead on software.. Lead on hardware.. Lead in new avenues.. Cloud, Server building and its software.. AI.. Sony simply aren't on the same level.. They are adapting now.. But they aren't big enough and overly reliant on their hardware selling to survive... Xbox consoles could die tomorrow Xbox would still live on via everything else.. This was the whole point to make Xbox a safe an reliable platform for decades to come.. A loss of a pillar due to shifting trends is no longer doom.. The loss of sales of PS5s would doom that brand and platform.. Nowhere to migrate to survive as a platform holder.
Now this is done Xbox is secure. its pillars can now be strengthened.. Consoles now have several uses in different environments mobile is currently dependent on cloud and game pass ultimate to access that feature.. Its not as viable as a dedicated device.. We can take this to its logical conclusion and apply this same thinking to their other pillars new and old.

You do know you only need to worry about compatibility if you are moving to a new architecture. Like them going cloud hybrid x64 ARM mobile based. So no they won't be making a traditional console. They will make low powered devices like a streaming stick or just put it in the controller.
Ms could go down the same route as asus rog ,a hand held pc with xbox game pass front end but could be docked to boost performance upto or beyond the series x.❤ the show g.
If they want to get into the Japan market more a hybrid console is the way to go.

Nah, I bought the Series X just about a year and a half ago , just by when the pandemic was about to be over. A new hybrid sounds cool, but not enough for to spend more than 400 bucks just to play on the go. This will be good for people who haven't bought a Series X yet and want a handheld feature.
If Microsoft knock the new console/handheld out of the park then a short generation will be forgotten .

In fairness MS have always innovated in hardware, the Kinect as much as people did not like it was amazing tech and is still used today, the surface when it first came out inspired a whole new line of PC form factors, their mice and keyboard have always been great and the Zune was amazing. MS has great products, but shite marketing and they dont have the killer instinct like Apple or Sony to block journos or publications etc etc.
Oh and Hololens for fecks sake, amazing tech.... again.... too early for their own good and not geared towards consumers.

The term play anywhere is screwing xbox over

I think Xbox is trying to capture a hype train that isn’t really there. Maybe they have more evidence than I do on demand but the steamdeck, legion go, Asus rog ally have a combined sales of 5m units (being 1-3 years on the market. They are also expensive. DF just had on their latest direct that to get series s power levels on a handheld today is not even possible with decent power consumption with current die sizes and amd hardware. That means you’re looking at a minimum $400 handheld with barely series s power levels.
Who is this for? Especially at the latter half of the generation when half series x/ps5 are struggling with new games. The other caveat is cloud. GeForce now and even ps5 streaming (currently only available on ps5) is way above series s performance even with streaming latency. If ps enabled streaming from the cloud on ps portal it would be in some regards a better performance handheld at half the price. It is said that people mostly use their handhelds at home and the use case for a handheld where there is no internet is like a 10 percent use case for most if that.
Will be interesting to see how ms manages a series s level handheld and the greatest leap in a dedicated console. That sounds like a wider sku gap than we currently have.
The leaked official documentation from the ABK trial suggested said that next gen is planned for 2028. Therefore, suggestions about a 2026 date seem not only highly speculative, but also running counter to the best available evidence.
A mid-gen handheld with Series S specs makes sense, because it wouldn't inflate the workload for game developers. By contrast, a 2026 next gen would exacerbate the already headache-inducing Xbox development workload. Having just got the hang of developing for the Series S + X, devs will have an additional SKU (or multiple SKUs) with radically different architecture. Devs are already complaining about the low install-base and complicated hardware setup of the Xbox platform.
Compare with Sony's approach. Devs are now getting familiar with the PS5's architecture. The PS5 Pro will add very little extra work onto their plate. They can just target the PS5, and then enable some extra graphical power on the Pro. If Xbox went next gen in 2026, the amount of work required to port to Xbox, which is already bloated, would get inflated even further.
So, not only does the 2026 next gen rumour run counter to the best available evidence (official documentation), it also seems like it would exacerbate Xbox's problems with the incentive for 3rd party developers to make games for their platform. Thoughts?

Consoles will forever upscale resolution to run it at 60 frames and remain at 500-600 dollars. The pro is going to be magic in the eyes of the ponies but in reality it’s still a weak console.

devs are lazy. that's the long and short of it. Xbox gives them great technology, and they are too lazy to use it. the gaming industry is circling the drain just out of laziness.
Time is money. Devs, like all professionals, do not work for free. They are paid by publishers. Publishers do not fund time-intensive projects unless they expect to return a profit on all the time (i.e. money) invested.
Its not that theyre lazy its "time". Why spend a lot of "time" on a smaller piece of the pie. Having said that. A handheld series S would be fire. There is a huge library already. Also if it sells like crazy developers would take notice of a whole new crowd of potential buyers to their software. Thats a huge win for microsoft. Also stop parity clause. If you want extra framerate thats what X is for. They need to differentiate the two more so. The latter half of this year is going to be filled with a crazy amount of 1st party games. All those ports they did were just a taste. I think part of the strategy was "Hey its getting better on this side". Come check us out now. We are no longer "Xbox has no games".

Nope, PS5 barely reach 60 fps on Rise of the Ronin, a PS3 graphics game. Those 30 fps xbox games will run 360p 15fps on PS5, 540p 15fps on PS5 pro.
