- Tribute to the late Swedish musician, Esbjörn Svenssonn. Piano Solo on “Did They Ever Tell Cousteau?” (Album: Seven Days of Falling Band: EST)
Originally planned for a week ago today, June 14 (I freely admit to not getting it down in time). One of my favorite solos of all time on any instrument.
Notes:
E tends to be an unusual choice of root for a piano song and especially for a piano solo (He slays it of course).
E is foundational on guitar (similar to C on the piano), which presents some cool opportunities for harmonics, open strings etc.
A few of the licks went out of the range of the guitar. To compensate, I reworked a few measures here and there an octave apart. Can you hear where they are?
Some licks felt almost tailor-made for six-string. Others were a nightmare (but a fun challenge).
I originally pictured it with metal tone, which worked great for a some parts but not others. In the end, light overdrive and phase felt better. It also fit the vibe of his effected piano (compression and flange if I had to guess… but not sure).
Pardon the slight blur - The sun was blaring and the light was not at its best for filming. But sometimes you just have hit “record” when inspiration strikes..
The guitar had to feel just right - a neck with fluidity and ease but enough resistance for these jazzy chromatic lines (including some that are very unique). After several test runs on different axes, this one of a kind ESP USA Eclipse fit the bill.
Other gear used: Jam Pedals Double Dreamer, Dunlop Phase 90. TC Electronics Flashback delay. Orange Rockerverb 100 mk111 DAddario.
Esbjörn Svenssonn left us on June 14, 2008. He’d been taking part in his other great passion besides music: Deep sea diving. This song, and it’s title reflect that.
RIP ES
A magician...........been following since '88..........😎😎

Brilliant.
EST is so amazing. Sadly passed away way too soon. So able to create music with mood, emotion and yet crazy chops. So great to see this!
Ok Al Demola Skolnick you rocking it 🤗
I never comment in your videos but this is really impressive playing. Thanks Alex for sharing your talent and making me listen to Esbjörn Svensson.
Thanks so much. I recommend this album, (7Days of Falling) and From Gagarin’s Point of View to start

This is beautiful! The piano is the first instrument I learned to play, and I never thought I'd hear a guitar sound like one!
Thank you 🙏🏼 In fairness, he makes his piano sound a bit like a guitar (via pitch effect & compression), so that helps me be able to meet him halfway 🙌
Hello Mr. Skolnick.
Amazing and awesome!!
Congratulations!!
Best regards from Chile.
🤘🎹🎸🎹🤘
amazing stuff Alex
I saw someone post this on Twitter by a fan/ exerciser (whatever that is) and the playing is great, but that beat just hit me in the soul. Wow. I'm checking this out if it's on iTunes. Awesome Alex.
Thank you. To me that’s the best part, beyond the joy of playing it myself - turning folks onto great music they might not have been aware of. Enjoy!
@@TheRealAlexSkolnick It's just unreal. I've shared with with everyone I know (yes, that was me blasting it on Twitter to my -17 followers) but I had to tell someone. Brilliant fella, keep it up!!
Edit.. I did purchase it on iTunes. 🤘🏼🙏🏻
Excellente idée de repiquer Esbörn Svenson sur la guitare 😎
Merci 🙏🏼
Beautiful!
Excellent as usual!
👏👏👏👏👏🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍👍👍
These videos never disappoint Alex - really enjoyed the viewpoint you created on Les Paul. Take your time toward the continuation but, please make it happen!!
That was a welcome surprise Alex, I also will be looking this up on piano 🎹 very Impressive playing & always a pleasure to listen. ( Love ❤ the new couch) Many thanks for sharing 💋🖤🦋( 2:46 really caught my ear carrying the song out ...👍)
Thz Master Alex
Hi Alex! When are you going to visit Argentina again? I admire you a lot, hugs!!
Sun flare not an issue, just keep jamming 🤘🏽
🙌🏽
What a fabulous and versatile guitar player you are Alex. Piano on guitar. Have you ever seen Tina S play Beethoven Moonlight Sonata 3rd Movement? I have been a fan of Testament since your first album.
Thank you. 🙏. I’ve seen some of her clips, not that, I’ll keep an eye out.
@@TheRealAlexSkolnick Hello Mr. Skolnick, here is the Tina S video: ruclips.net/video/o6rBK0BqL2w/видео.html
That was pretty neat, thanks for sharing! Was that some hybrid picking in there or are you just being really quick with the picking hand?
Mainly picked, but a few notes plucked with fingers for feel, so hybrid yes
@@TheRealAlexSkolnick Awesome, that run at about 1:50 is really smooth. Great stuff.
🤙😎🤘
The Master. I am going to get a LTD As very soon. Alex can I send you some awesome Beers?
Estas a otro nivel.Yo como guitarrista,a años luz de distancia. Pero cuanto más veo tus videos más ganas de tocar y mejorar tengo.
What is your best advice for new guitarists so I avoid developing bad habits?
How different does it feel to play a piano line on a fretboard? Sounds amazing!
Thank you. Some lines feel similar to jazz guitar lines but some are very, very different.
This is great man! I'd love to see the tabs for this one. :)
Thanks! I did it all by ear, tabs would be too time consuming. But I welcome anyone who wants to tab it and will answer questions
@@TheRealAlexSkolnick are the drums being hit through your board and replay, or do I hear a relay effect directly from the soundboard for the drums, or controlled by the drummer?
is the transcription available?
Its not written, I just played by ear (but may write it out at some point)
Wow, the piano effect is real, but sorry I prefer the black souls solos
That’s ok. But the reason I’m able to come up with solos like “Souls” is because I study a
Lot of other music such as this.
@@TheRealAlexSkolnick Thanks for answering, you are a legend for me, a reference. Yes yes, I know, I have followed you all my life, I play the guitar as a hobby (I recently discovered your channel) I am 54 years old, I saw you (and recorded) at the clash of titans in Milan (1990?), just to say that, expressiveness and dynamics of the souls of black solos are unique, for me reference and should be studied,
