If the parents didn't have any trouble with German bread, they might not have an issue with gluten, but with the addictives which are in American bread.
Thought that too
was the same with Donny's sister from PassportTwo
I heard it’s pesticides when people are able to eat bread outside USA
@@mimime3716 bleached flour, also. Pesticides are in german bread as well, just different ones. Also we don't have genetically engineered wheat.
Heard it might be Round up, which should be illegal. Damn dangerous stuff. Of course celiac disease is really a severe reaction to gluten and not what this is about.
Aw your parents just look like they've always belonged to Germany ❤😂
You know, only two Parties at US. There is only one for intellektuelle, intelligent people. What i want to comment. US, cool dream people, but not easy to found

Your Dad will be happy to know that Solingen has been known for quality steel knives and blades since the middle ages. If you go to museums all over Europe and look at their medieval weapons collections you‘ll find swords declared as made in Solingen by the museum descriptions. Also Solingen has „Klingenstadt“ = City of Blades as a additional name. Making knives is their specialty!
Me fecit Solingen
They are also known for making wonderful scissors. I have a collection of several stitching scissors from Solingen at home. They cut very well.

@@saschahinzmann8072 Is there any?
Is Solingen still a twin town with Blyth, Northumberland in the UK? I was born in Blyth and remember a new housing estate named in honour of Solingen in the early 70s which still exists today.
My wife and I were in Essen visiting a woman who had been with us in USA as an exchange student 35 years ago. We had such fun with 3 generations of her family: 14 year old son, her husband and her and her parents. We did day trips to Dusseldorf and Koln and had to force ourselves to go to bed at night as we talked about our lives, politics in US and germany and what we had done in the past. Conversations were in english until they choked up, then german until we choked up and with an occasional descriptor in french when no one could come up with the accurate word in either language. (wine and beer were were served, but no one imbibed to excess).
We felt we could have stayed for at least a year, were it not for our travel schedule. The sights were interesting, but yes, it's all about the people.
Miss you guys! Hope everything is allright
Sind zurück in die USA gezogen
With the drivers license I had the same experience as you Sarah, just vise versa. I lived in the US as a german foreigner for three years, and I had to do a driving test also. A few years prior to that, I flew over as a tourist and was allowed to drive a big camper van around the country without knowing anything about the US regulations 🤘😎
Yes! If you go an American state that has no reciprocity agreement with Germany you also can’t drive there. It’s such a dumb system. The countries should collaborate with each other at the federal level and not at the state.
Ok, I didn't know that that is state related in the US. In my case it was TX. As you said: some laws just don't make sense
@@HawkPats I assume its a risk thing.
A tourist for a couple of weeks whilst not knowing the rules will tend to be cautious. When they have been there for a few weeks there caution will go but they still will not know the rules.
A tourist may be twice as likely to be involved in an accident (made up figure I do not know what the correct figure is) but they are driving for only a few weeks.
My sister lives in Sweden and she was allowed to drive for one year on her South African driver's licence then had to do a Swedish driver's test. I don't know how they figured out that your driving gets suddenly bad after one year.
My husband was the same. He came from Switzerland. He had to do a written test and driving test. All my husband had to do was drive around the block 🤣. They were gone for 3 minutes. The lady doing the testing wrote "Very experienced driver" in her notes. When I lived in Switzerland I had a harder time. The man doing the test knew how Floridans drove 😅😅. We are crazy drivers. I was very careful though. The tester was actually surprised in my driving skills.

Sara, your parents are lovely people! I moved from Germany to the Florida when I was young and it was difficult to be so far away from family. I was very fortunate that my parents decided to visit once a year for many, many years. They had such a wonderful time with my two daughters and my mom often said that she was closer to my girls than to some of the other grandkids because she got to spent day and night with them. She helped bathe them when they were little and played the same Mensch aergere dich nicht game with them! They had the opportunity to attend pre-school and school functions. They participated in girl scout gatherings etc. My dad made friends with many of our neighbors. He planted plants in our yard that are sky high now and my daughters remember them very well. My parents passed away in 2020 and 2022 and I'm so glad we have those wonderful memories!
What special times you had with your parents! And to even have plants in your yard that were planted by your dad - a forever reminder of him. This is the hardest part of living abroad for me. I have struggled a lot with missing my family and I'm not sure it's worth it yet...would you say it is?
@@MyMerryMessyGermanLife It's difficult to say if it is worth it. I believe it's a really wonderful opportunity for your children to experience other cultures. Once my kids were older I visited Germany much more frequently which helped a lot to not miss out on so much. Also, some of my friends had family within the US that lived far away as well so I always thought that my situation wasn't that much different. If your family can visit frequently and you have the chance to fly home every couple of years I think it will help! Love your videos!

Hello my friends. So cool that your parents liked being in Germany. 😊
To your question about meat: Our Edeka has both options for meat. The usual suspects are available pre-packaged, but they also have a counter with a lot more options. The thing with our particular Edeka is that all the meat from the counter is Bio quality, so it's a lot more expensive than the pre-packaged stuff. I guess that is why they have both options.
Memories:
As a child I grew up in Hamburg, in our section of the street there were: bakers, butchers, grocers (milk, butter, cheese, etc.) and a stationery and toy shop and a hairdressing salon. By the late 1970s to mid 1980s only the hairdresser, baker and stationery shop remained.
The other shops could not compete against the offers from Aldi, Penny and Co.
There are still a few bakeries, but many belong to a large corporation. Self-employed butchers are much less common and they are usually specialized. Today you can usually only find a butcher at Edeka, Famila and a few others, these used to be at REWE too.
Our Edeka butcher gives my son a Würstchen every time we come by. I like to buy from the butcher counter and not the pre-packed because the meat tends to be preservative free and healthier.

Yes! It was a little scary for them at first and they did feel camera shy. Kevin and I are so used to being on camera now, I forget how it's hard for others!
Liebe Sarah, lieber Kevin,
this was truly one of the most interesting and entertaining videos you’ve made so far. Would like to see more of your parents experiences here in Germany. I can say that I had a “tear in my eye”, because your dad reminds me so much to my dear American friend Mark that passed away two years ago. Mark and his wife Karen became very good friends to us over 12 years of knowing each other. They are living in Florida, we in northern Germany, but the mutual visits were always a blast. We learned so much about America and Americans, they learned about Germany and the Germans. I can remember the first time they came to us to Germany, after a long period of writing emails with and sending photos of our lives here and visiting them in their house, Mark’s wife Karen sat in our living room and said: “it’s funny, but I am thinking that I am sitting in a picture”. 😊. Viele Grüße von Markus.
Haha, your (grand-)parents got a much more German experience than most travelers from abroad. You've been germanized to an outstanding degree. Sara, wanna make a bet that you had multiple instances where a German word popped into your mind during a conversation with your parents instead of the English word?
Quark: yepp, *technically* a cheese, but more along the lines of taste like a slightly tangy yoghurt, with the consistency somewhere between cream cheese and a very stiff yoghurt. What I was really astonished at seeing in one of my subscribed cooking channels (Binging with Babish) that he recently used Quark in one of his recipes.
BTW: Quark is an awesome replacement for any cream cheese ingredients you might use in the States, IF you can get your hands on it. Any 'cheese cake' gets a really awesome taste from it. Same amounts, basically.
Depending on where you got your bread your parents are probably ok. Many doughs are allowed to leaven for two to three days before being baked. A good bakery usually does that. Store-bought industrial bread however use the standard rising agents, among them a turbo-yeast, that simply changes the flavor, but not the structure of the dough, and allows very quick formation of CO2. A long leavening process changes the gluten in the dough, making it much easier to digest, resulting in little to no side-effects. Many sourdoughs can even be eaten by gluten-intolerants whole-sale. Mind you, full-blown cilliac patients should still be careful.
Strangely enough, the mineralization of tap water is often better than even high quality bottled sparkling water in Germany. OK, ok, it's not the same taste, I agree. The different Sprudelwasser all do have slightly, but notably different tastes to them. But that also applies to local tap waters. I assume down in Bavaria the tap water must come either from deep wells, or even from glaciers.
"Haus" obviously means house. But in terms of a restaurant menu "hausgebeiztes" means it was 'cured in-house' ie by themselves instead of having it cured elsewhere. However, this was probably not a smoke-cured salmon, but cured in a brine, similar to pickling or marinating.
Same goes for anything else prefixed by "haus-XYZ" in a menu. These are home-made, not industrially prepared foods. Like 'hausgemachte Knödel" or "hausgemachte Spätzle" being "home-made dumplings" or "home-made Spätzle noodles".
In some cases you may also see "Hausschlachtung" meaning the meat comes from an animal butchered on the premises (under rigorous veterinary control in Germany).
Differences of solar panels: one is photo-voltaic producing electricity, the other is solar-thermal, heating water. My parents got solar-thermal plus a 2000 liter insulated layered storage tank. It uses purely physical, temperature controlled bi-metallic valves to get the specified water temperature into each layer, completely without any electronics. Water naturally forms almost non-interchanging layers of one temperature IF the differences in the temperature are marked enough. Even during the winter the sun is able to supply up 75°C water during a clear, sunny day. Which is sufficient to heat both tap and radiator water. A full morning of sun on those panels heats up the full tank even in the winter.
That however obviously doesn't provide electricity.
Yes, you guessed right! There were many times I couldn’t remember the English word for some things. I could only say them in German!
🤣
Your mum and dad are so cute! You got me tearing up at the end there - I hope they come back to visit soon x
This is so lovely having your parents visit and witness the culture and countryside.
Glad you liked it in germany. Glad to have pople visiting oure country. :)
So nice to see all of you together. That happpiness is really contagious. 😃Most of the gelato stores are closed in winter because they are family owned and it is still not uncommon that those families return to Italy in the winter. Also once snapped up that a lot of those families have their roots in one valley in the dolomites.
What a lovely video! Glad to see they enjoyed it here. You did a good job as tourist guides.
Jagee and Geboo as 'names' made by the very own grandchild comes only like an honor to every grandparent for sure. :D

Lovely grandparents❤, I hope they will have a lot of more chances to visit their lovely family in Germany and can explore more of our wonderful country.
Gosh, that's so sweet! And it's so interesting to hear how they experienced everything and what they thought surprising ❤
Back in the 1980s, I decided I'd like to treat my grandmother to a trip to the Swiss alps, specifically to Zermatt and the Matterhorn. She was unexpectedly extremely excited. On the day we left, we were just south of Frankfurt (where she lived) when I was driving at 160kph (100mph) when she suddenly blurted out that at our current speed it would take forever to get there. (BTW the trip was awesome.)
😆😆 too funny! Your grandma loved some SPEED!
Your parents are lovely! How clever of your father to get a useful souvenir! I hope they had a nice time, and come again soon.
Yeah wasn’t that a good souvenir? 😊
For those, that don't know what "Quark" is: It is an acid-based cheese product. So imagine sour cream, but thicker / more viscous, but not as thick / viscous as cream cheese. It is neither sweet nor savory by default. Which is why you can find it as ingredients of both main dishes, like "oven potatoes with quark and chives", and also as deserts like simply "quark with berries".
A lot of Germans put it on bread with jam on top or put müsli (typically a mix of cereals and berries/fruit) in it for breakfast.
In Austria, we mix Topfen with spices and all sorts of fresh herbs and spread it on bread
All cheeses do have (milk) acid. Cream chese or sour milk cheese might only have lactic acid bacteria.
But other cheese like Quark has rennet two. Only cheep products tody have no rennet. But that is a money decision of the company. It is allowed that it is called Quark even if it is not Quark.
Same with other fake products.
I never thought of it as cheese
@@sandraankenbrand well, it isn't cheese, but it is a cheese-like product. Unlike most cheeses, it doesn't use rennet, which is (usually) an animal product, but a mild acid instead. But it is still strained curdled milk, just like any other cheese.
We do have the eggs filled with candy, they are paper mache and often covered in nostalgic images. They were very common up until the 1980s, and while they still exist, they are much rarer. It´s also a thing to hide "Easter nests", little round baskets lined with green dyed saw dust to imitate grass and filled with chocolate eggs, bunneys, chicks, lady bugs, etc.
Thank you for this video. Your parents seem to be wonderful grandparents and lovely people. It must have been so hard to come to germany and leave them in the states. Even so in our modern world there is the opportunity to talk on the phone, skype and visit, I think leaving loved ones behind is the hardest thing about living abroad. At the end of the video, I shed a little tear for you, because they were leaving, but I am also happy, that they were with you and had so many nice memories made, to tell. I hope they had a good journey home and you will see and hear each other again soon.

It's so heart-warming to see your parents and mostly the interaction between the kids and their grandparents. Unfortunately, all my grandparents are gone now so I remembered the time we spend as kids with our grandmother. As my maternal grandma is from Korea, we visited her in the summer holidays for five weeks and it's such a beautiful memory. I have a little sister who - when she was 2-5 yo - was shy to speak Korean and couldn't understand all. So I often had to translate what my little sister said to my grandma and Korean relatives and vice-versa. The story how your kids translated German for their grandparents reminded me totally of how I did for my grandma/relatives and my sister.
I really like your videos. It's so interesting to see how the process of settling down in Germany is for you with children and I can improve my English. Also for me, as my mother is from Korea and lives here for over 30 years it's super interesting how it could have been for her - though she moved here as a student and had the kids (me & my sister) after living here for several years.😊
So interesting to see the view of older/more experienced people in life, very interesting
How wonderful to see your parents, they are lovely! I do LOVE that your Mom loves quark because my Mom absolutely loves it too. Hope your Dad gets to return and drive a lot faster on the Autobahn hahah. Regarding Aldi & Lidl: They do have headquarters in the different countries too so they import some products but because countries are so different in foods and tastes, they do produce own products as well and work with other local companies/brands. When Aldi or Lidl opens up new stores here (it will be the same in the US), they usually have people from Germany teach the employees.
Okay good to know about ALDI and LIDL! And I love that your mom also loves quark. 💕
The term "Quark" for the elementary particle in physics was taken from a novel by James Joyce (Finnegans Wake), as a word without any meaning in English ("Three quarks for Muster Mark"). Coincidentally a German word for that white cheese already existed.

Hi Sarah, congratulations on these great and lovely parents! 👍👍 They really are the prototypes of grandma and grandpa. I immediately took them into my heart. I wish for you and your kids that they could come visit more often - if they want to. Grandma and Grandpa are a very important part of the family, especially for the kids. I remember them from my youth! Maybe Kevin's parents will stop by sometime. It might have been interesting to see what they didn't like about Germany 🇩🇪. 😊 Sarah - thank you for this video. 👏👏👏
Lovely people. ☺ And thanks to you they got some insights that nearly no tourist will ever see. ❤
those are some very lovely parents you have! it seems like they really enjoyed their probably long overdue familytime :)
Your parents are adorable! 😊
As for ALDI in the US, the Store Brands are the same, yes, and some is imported.
However, ALDI's thing is to go to local producers and demand a certain quality level, while guaranteeing a high number of purchase from the producer. So the ALDI Brand name is the same, but it is often produced locally.
Exactly. When I lived in Berlin, the eggs at Edeka, Rewe and Lidl came from as far away as the Netherlands or even Austria - yet the eggs at Aldi came from the very next village outside the city, only some 20 km away from my place.
Okay good to know!
BTW Edeka also exports from Germany to the States. Thats funy if your in an store in the states and see two on first look same Haribo winegum products with slightly different colors and if you read the rearside you see the one is produced in the US and the other in Germany.
Where are you????
You haven't posted on RUclips for months!
Hope all is well with you and your family❤
Back to USA
Very sympathic people and a great video!
Great Video. Your parents are very nice and open for new things and experiences. 👍
Jemand hat deren Facebook Account übernommen und postet nur noch alte Sachen.
Für wie blöd hält derjenige uns eigentlich?
We’ve always dreamed of retiring to the Alps so this was truly a dream come true!
Soviel dazu.
Das ist in der Tat sehr merkwürdig!
Alles nur Show...
I grew up in Northern Germany in the 80's. We used to get real eggs, carefully pierce a small hole in the top and then bottom then blow the egg out into a bowl, then we'd paint the empty shell. I don't know if it's a German tradition or just specific to the town I lived in but we love doing this as kids.
It is a tradition all over the place, also in Austria. We then hang them on twigs which we put in a vase - the tricky bit is to time it quite right so the twigs bloom on the Easter weekend
Eier auspusten is an old easter tradition ;) Moin from northern Germany :)
@@hotwykinger6889 Nice info. We brought the tradition back with us when we moved to the UK in 1991. Now all the grand kids do it too :)
How pleasant ordinary life can be. Thanks for sharing. Hope they made their way safely, just over the "pond"
Nice, I'm glad that your family was able to spend such a relaxing Eastern in Germany. I think we have a lot more in common than what separates us. Of course, many things are a little different but also recognizable. I found the cuckoo clock in the background the funniest, but also very cozy with you. Thank you for sharing this. I wish that you discover many more beautiful things in Germany.
Greetings to your parents, Axel ❤
As a German I enjoyed this video soooo much!!!! 😊 Thank you for your impressions, guys!!! I'll definitively subscribe, give thumbs up and share!!!!
Wirklich immer sehr interessant. Wenn aber gar nichts mehr kommt, wäre schade.
At 31:35 the grandpa said "Danke". As a german I thought I heard it wrong :D
Soo sweet 😊👍
I liked the whole conversation!
Your parents are so sweet, nice that you could show them your home and Bavaria, that you had time together to enjoy. Always interesting to hear new opinions about experience someone made in Germany. Cheers and thanks for the video ;-)
Slight correction: "gebeizt" is pickled, not cured and NEITHER is raw. It is just not cooked through heat, but chemically it is "cooked" - the proteins are broken down, to make it more digestible and extend the "shelf life".
Curing is done by using a lot of salt. Either in water to create a brine or directly applied to the meat.
Pickling is vinegar based, with other ingredients, that can give more flavor.

Quark is a Ferengi at Star Trek Deep Space Nine 🤣
When you order a "Halver Hahn" here in Cologne you don't get a half chicken. You get a rye bread bun with matured cheese and mustard.
First WELCOME TO MY COUNTRY I really hope you will have a great time ❤❤😁😁 LOVE FROM BAVARIA you are so WELCOME 😃😃👍👍
Thank you so much!
Loved your Video, my regards to your parents, I hope they enjoyed the stay here that much that they come back soon! A lot more to see here in Germany. Also the northern parts of Germany have their own magic.
Die werden nicht nochmal kommen da sie ihre Kinder überzeugt haben wieder in die USA zu ziehen
Sehr schönes Video- Hat mich gefreut deine Eltern kennenlernen zu dürfen.
I miss you too😢. All the best for you all in America! I hope hearing from you once again on this channel. Few sentences would be ok, just to know that everything is ok.
They are already moving back to Amerika
Vielen Dank für dieses wunderschöne Video. Lasst es euch gut gehen.
Sie werden sich es auch gut gehen lassen jetzt wo sie wieder zurück in die USA gehen
@@TheDude237why are you everywhere
@@pianoandeden Just to inform everyone. There are still people which subbed new
Mny Thx for this video -
SO wonderful people!
Love it!
Fantastic! My parets were alrady too old and weak when I moved to Germany. But my sister and niece have visited me twice. It may be time for inviting them now again! Thanks for remembering me about it!!
Solingen is very well known to have a centuries old tradition of producing swords, knives and scissors. Nowadays they are usually machined but there are still some artisan producers.
Oh good to know! I’ll have to pass that on to my dad.
The only left artisan knifemakers in Solingen, which are not custom makers, are Klaas and Hartkopf afaik. Böker is kind of an industrial producer and unfortunatly a few of the better ones with a real long history went out of business in the last few years because they couldn‘t find anyone to continue their business e. g. Linder and Hubertus
@@myknife_life with Böker being somewhat widely available in the States, that would be an interesting factory tour for any knife-lover visiting Germany from the US I think. Sarah's dad may have to look into it next time!
Even in The Netherlands Solingen is famous for knives and cutlery. I have a kitchen knife block from Solingen, Zwilling J.A. Henckels
So great to get to know your parents, they seem very nice and open to another culture. It sure looked like they enjoyed their time in Germany.
You and your parents are so heartwarming. Love! ❤
Seems like you had a lovely visit! Nice of the weather to cooperate as well. Safe travel home
