Today's episode guides you through the beginning of understanding and learning to play "alaap". The word "alaap" is frequently used in both Bengali and Hindi, which translates to having a conversation. In music, the meaning is not very different. Alaap, is the first part of a recital on a raag, where the artist explores the possibilities of a raag, teasing it's rules creating melodic lines using notes and time excluding rhythm or beats. Even though alaap is usually taught after one has achieved a certain musical maturity, this series is to give you a basic idea of the design of alaap, along with a short approach for playing as a beginner's guide.
