Ravi Shankar style Sitar have low pitch string

Ustad Vilayat Khan's Sitar has a totally different sound because of construction and the number of sympathetic strings allowed to vibrate in sympathy with note played. This type has no upper, "Toomba" gourd, nor Bass strings like the Pandit Ravi Shankar model. Having the Bass strings allows wonderfully vicious meends to be pulled. The Ravi model usually has the great buzzing, ringing overall presence. The VK model has it's own unique and wonderful sound too, with an enchanting tone. I've played them both, and these thoughts only reflect my own experience
