ABOUT THIS VIDEO- Welcome to the Rag Yaman sitar lesson series! Here in lesson # 25, we'll begin learning the alap for raga yaman. What is alap? Alap is the very first unfolding of the raga in performance and development. It’s a very reflective and meditative form that has no metric meter or pulse. The alap is fully improvised but it still follows a structure.
The reason that we are working on the alap last is because in many ways it is the most challenging part of this music. To play alap you must have a confident, commanding understanding of the raga to be capable of elaborating solely on the melody. An alap can be anywhere for 10 minutes to one hour, depending on the performer's capacity and mood. Traditionally, alap is not notated and is taught in a back and forth style from teacher to student.
With all this said, it’s going to be a fun and rich experience working on alap in rag yaman with you. Enjoy!

Nice lesson
What i dont get is what about the chalan here? I thought the chalan would be the movement of development. But here at the beginning you go to Sa and then down to pa and ma, while in the chalan you went to ga and re and so on!?
So what use is the chalan then really?
Paramahamsa Yogananda ki jay.
