De La Soul and the other artists associated with the “Native Tongue Family” were a phenomenon that changed hip hop in a positive way. Less about ego and more about the music itself. RIP Trugoy and thank you for the positive vibes.
Their sounds came from their environment. Anyone that takes a trip out to where they live Long Island.. quite, peaceful working folks... it ain't the same at all- bunched up clusterfu*k living in the project's... it's a big difference in upbringing, anxieties and thoughts... survival instincts - competition- on high in project's- it's why so many different styles of hip hop came out of New York... the variety of neighborhoods.
@@castopoe Take another listen to “Straight Out the Jungle” LP. HipHop pioneer Kool DJ Red Alert oversaw that album with a young Q-Tip involved too. They had a house flair but I’d still say they were true HipHoppaz from the Ol Skool.

I remember when "3 Feet High And Rising" was released. The album was flashy and stood out. So, I decided to buy it and listen to it without knowing what I was going to get. I wasn't feeling the album at first. They didn't sound like Rakim. They didn't sound like Public Enemy. They didn't sound like LL, KRS One, or NWA. They had a somewhat different rap style and they used the kind of samples producers and DJs don't normally use. But over time, I found myself listening to that album over and over again from start to finish. To me, "3 Feet High And Rising" seemed like a noticeable turning point in Hip Hop music which ushered in a new sound and influenced new artists like A Tribe Called Quest, Latifah, Monie Love, and Gang Starr. That album was a masterpiece. I've been a big fan of De La Soul ever since and is glad to finally be able to stream their older music on a regular basis. RIP Trugoy my brotha.😞
I first heard both Magic Number and (Tribes') Bonita Applebum the summer before first year of college at someone's basement party! I actually begged and harassed the DJ to play both songs again 3x's! It felt like Hip Hop was on the cusp of rising to higher heights creative genius. What a summer that was! But later that Fall........... De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Jungle Brothers, Brand Nubian, Monie Love, et al were the soundtrack of my college years among my circle of friends. They were the soundtrack of my life. Ive seen this on much music in Canada. I think it was part of "Looking for the perfect beat" which was a doc that touched on more dance oriented stuff (not rock).
I was in elementary school when this era went down and I really hated gangsta rap and found it horribly obnoxious. It was also by far the trendiest music at the time so it was all I knew and associated with rap. But I was shown these guys about a decade after 3ft high came out and it completely changed my mind about hip hop. I’ve always made a concerted effort to differentiate between rap and hip hop when it came to de la, native tongues, and all those inspired by them. I went from hating rap to consuming all the hip hop I could find. Even now I don’t hate rap but I still only respect the rappers who respect hip hop. Which to me is more about the construction of a classic than just the bars, which ofc are their own art form, but mean little outside the confines of good production. Even now I don’t care to listen to NWA, etc but I still respect it as a raw form of hip hop. But native tongues is where the classics started as far as I’m concerned. Midnight marauders still the greatest hip hop album in my book, alongside a couple dozen others from 91-94. Golden era will be missed. And it’s very sad how de la’s arc went down when you look at how much money some of even the most terrible rap artists make today.
I had the EXACT same experience in reverse, Nirvana got me into loving Heavy Metal which I hated for the very reasons you stated for hated rap. I went down a rabbit hole that has led me to further genres I couldn't have imagine. What De La did for you, Nirvana did for me.

I’m just curious because I’m a beat maker and I’m into liner notes etc… I know Maseo did “Me, Myself and I” for sure and I assume Paul did a good number of them but I’m just curious about this stuff. Paul is maaaad underrated- especially when you account for his Gravediggaz stuff and how he actually assembled and named that group- not RZA as many think- no disrespect to RZA of course. It’s just impressive that Paul dis most of the Gravediggaz beats in addition to his De La and Stetsasonic stuff. #RIPDonNewkirk as well!

I’m more of a HipHop head but I do like some rock (Queens of the Stone Age, Nirvana, Chili Peppers..) can you recommend some other rock bands I’m surely missing out on? I’m having trouble finding good rock since Foo came out. I liked Portishead and Esthero and Beck and Gorrilaz but not sure if they’re classified as rock. 🤔 KT Tunstall is cool but I like a more hardcore sound.

De La Soul was just fun music, and Arrested Development effectively communicated a different perspective to my cracker ass that I had not appreciated prior to that point in time. I turn on country and rap (as well as lots of other kinds of music) these days.
