OMG thank you for this video. Great job. Answered all of my questions instantly. I was thinking for the drain tubes I may use a clear bottle as a collector rather than drill holes.
Just got mine yesterday. Thought it would be a slam dunk after looking at your video for the install. Unfortunately, they've completely changed the mounting /rail system on the new ones. Why on earth they wanted to complicate it is beyond me. The new system is much more complex because of additional fussy brackets. What should have been an hour install took me almost four. Terrible change. Just a warning to new buyers. Had to rely on the instructions included, so you can image how easy that was.
I got mine last month and very disappointed. Because of the change, i’m unable to use my bed rails. I wanted to return but i don’t want to pay for shipping and restocking fee. If you like the product base on this video just beware that the hardwares and the mounting brackets are changed. I would not recommend base on my experience. Really disappointed.
Just picked up my cover this week before seeing comments regarding the rail change. One of the reasons I went with the MX4 was because it would allow the use of the OEM bed rails with tie-downs. Did the cover seal sit tightly against the bed top? It's difficult to squeeze the weatherstripping on the BAKFLIP rail.
Same happened to me. I am in the process of returning it. I also filed a compliant with my AMEX so hopefully I will get a full refund even with the charged back shipping/restock. In short, the design change (for cost reasons) I presume is a disaster and does not allow for use of the accessory rail as mentioned. Hopefully someone makes an install video of the new design and so folks can make an informed decision. I am staying away from this brand, but I did write BAK and asked them why the horrible design change? No response as yet.
I just discovered the same thing installing mine. Disappointed at first, but I’m wondering if having the factory rail mounted under the old bracket they used to use put extra levering force on the rail hardware. It can imagine someone strapping something down and the whole rail “peeling” off from the mounting hardware. I can still use my factory tie downs with the new system (albeit with less adjustability) while not putting extra levering force on the hardware.
@3:25 you were saying you didnt need that weather foam, can you explain in detail why you didnt use it? Mine came with 2 thin foams and when I used it, it looks like it let a gap on the window side. I used the thin long pieces like a highway on that part do I need to remove them?
"Rendered unfit for resale" is often cheaper than return shipping. I had that issue with an LED headlight bulb being replaced under warranty. I sent them a picture of clipping the wires for the plug off at the base of the bulb. Bookstores rip off the covers of books and magazines to be returned for credit and send only that back to the publisher, the "Stripped Books" and "Stripped Magazines" get destroyed locally. It's much cheaper to ship 100 covers than 100 books. BTW that's a much nicer hard-shell tonneau cover than I had for my Mazda B4000 pickup.
Has anyone measured the inside clear dimension of the bed when the cover is tilted all the way up.? Looking to use a mountain bike tailgate pad and need to know true inside dimension. Thanks in advance.
There is some leaking in a rain storm. The tacoma has ribs on the bed that prevent any water from getting to things. (That is mostly from not installing the drain tubes)
I just installed a used Bakflip I paid $300 for. Your vid walked me through the whole installation.
Many thanks!!
Happy to help. These sure are nice to have!
Awesome video! Way better than the vague instructions.
Thank you. Yes, those instructions were pretty terrible.
Thank you for the video it was very helpful with my install!
Great video. Easy to follow. I’m interested in whether yo decided to install the drain tubes as well?
Did you end up installing the drain tubes?
Excellent Video! Thanks for putting it together!

Thank you so much Sir
Did I miss the drain tube installation?

Hello my friend, thank you for the clip. How much does it cost?
Any word on how leaky the cover was?
There is some leaking in a rain storm. The tacoma has ribs on the bed that prevent any water from getting to things. (That is mostly from not installing the drain tubes)
Tacomas don't have a bed liner, the entire bed is a once piece molded composite. The fenders are an exterior cladding.
👍
I hope you have better luck than me. It leaks really bad along to sides because of the way the Tacoma is made.
So far the leaks are minimal. Enough that it can get the bed channels wet but not effect boxes in the bed.
