A Long Lost Painting

- I found this excerpt of a painting I did around 2008 ? not really sure.
It was when Scott and I first started to film our paintings. I did this from a photo. The painting didn't come out in the end, so the video was never made. I am not sure if I threw it out or painted over it.
We have so many hard drives and when I was looking through one a while back I found this 19 minute portion. I don't have any voice over, it's just the close ups.
I thought I would post this because what else would I do with this. Ha.

You know it's really inspiring to know there are such amazing artists right down the street. Painting and drawing is very solitary work. That can be frustrating and a bit lonely but knowing somewhere another artist is going on the same journey is comforting. Love the channel! Been working my way through the backlog of videos.

Truly a gorgeous and mezmorizing clip. Thank you for sharing. Your sensitivity to color and value transition is so masterful. Watching how delicately you handle your brush and the care of every stroke you make has reinforced my need to s l o w down. So, so beautiful Susan. Very nice work. I envy your brushes, in my country the selection is incredibly limited, it's especially hard to find brushes with long hairs, the sellers last time were making fun of me when I asked for such and started to correct me that "if the hair is long it won't handle good and there is no such brushes"... I wanted to facepalm myself.
Wow, that is amazing what they said to you. They are very limited in their knowledge. I am sorry you can’t get better brushes. But, Scott uses a lot of old worn out brushes and palette knives
@@susanlyonfineart It is true! Some of the best brushes for some effects (especially impasto and dry brush) are cheap, weird, old and worn out, it all depends on the style.
😀I actually trim and shape bigger number brushes to make small number with long hairs. I trim flats to make dagger or filbert brushes as well. Also I use iron to flat-out old out of shape ox hair brushes.
So you are slow and methodical in this approach, do you work this way with all your paintings and drawings?

I am definitely a different kind of painter, but I can absolutely learn a lot from you.
What is the tool you use to measure the eyes and why do you use it?

At 12:37 I realized that there is virtually no different between the sclera of the eye and the skin underneath. How do you decide if you can get away with doing that? Most people, including me, would probably tend to overstate that transition. I heard you mention that you use the posterize filter in photoshop. Do you just use the same colour if posterize shows the same value for the entire region?
Squint and see how values are close together. The white of the eye is usually the same value as the skin next to it. Only next to darker skin will it look lighter, but it is still a warm tone
