Watch a Charcoal portrait by Scott Burdick
I took this excerpt from a longer drawing video that Scott did in 2010.
I sped up some of the demo and had to take out the music because I couldn't put it on RUclips. I added free music.
Scott loves to have the models share their stories.
I typed out Donald's words about his life.

Thank you for the video....I felt like I was there with you visiting such a cool place and museums. Love every minute of it.😊
Thank You, I love hearing that.
I've done a fair amount of mountain climbing; going up is good aerobically but going down is far more taxing on the body. Susan, next time take along a walking stick or better yet two ski poles. Thanks for letting us join in. Happy New year.
I love how you described the effect of the paint on the energy of a painting!
@@christinahetzler1375 thank you 🌸
Susan, thank you so much for sharing; I so enjoy and look forward to your “Artist Diaries” and really do appreciate that you and Scott take the time to make them-I always learn from your generosity and am truly thankful for it. Btw, I have a brand new can of Krylon Fine Art fixatif and now I’ll be a bit more confident when it comes time for me to try it out, thank you for mentioning it-it’s seemingly small things like this that can make a significant difference to a young, aspiring, artist like myself. Thank you again. With much gratitude.

Thank you both for this delightful New Years Day audiovisual smorgasbord. This made my day! An extraordinary menu it was, including the surprise desert - a walk through the Pilot Mountain State Park. Lots of WOW moments as I was seeing so many amazing landscape painting possibilities . . .and then further inspiration during the chicken visit - such beautiful plumages, shapes and sizes -there's a whole series of chicken (and rooster) portraits in them there Gallus domesticus! Loved that little one with her feathery boots. To you and Scott, a bountiful and art-filled 2025!
Thank you Marie, Your comments made me so happy. We do hope to paint or draw the chickens soon. I have become very fond of them.

Thank you 🙂
Hi Susan. So one of your videos showed up in my feed a couple of weeks ago. I loved it and decided that I had to go back to your very first video and watch all of them from the beginning. Obviously, I just finished this one, number 42! I also enjoyed working with pastels, but the organizing and keeping them organized is a huge endeavor. If you have a good tip on sharpening pastel pencils other than using a knife, I’m all ears! Have you and Scott ever visited the Barnes Museum in Philadelphia? I’m in Wilmington, DE and the Barnes is really a must see!
Get a mini dolly to roll your stuff. I get tired also and take vitamin b12 under tongue to help fatigue. Loved the tips on portraiture.
@@kathleenlairscey5934 😊 thanks
Really interesting video, thank you 😀🇬🇧
@@timpalmerphoto thank you for watching ☀️
Really helpful video - Wonderful loose approach, which is what I'm striving for. I've been painting with acrylics for many decades and now I'm anxious to follow up on your tip to use heavy body gesso for white. The titanium white n the heavy body acrylics isn't stiff enough, especially when fresh out of the tube and tends to weaken the consistency of the other colors - Always very frustrating when attempting to paint thick strokes or use a palette knife. What brand are you using? I see Liquitex has a "Super Heavy Body Gesso. I think this will be a game changer. Thank you so much!
@@MarieGD1947 wonderful, glad we can help. Scott uses liquitex and golden paints . 😊
Susan, thank you for these videos. Those of us without family or not celebrating the holiday really appreciate spending time in the studio with you, and sharing your joy.
Hi Jan? not sure your name. Thank you so much for your comment, Scott and I like to think celebrate a little bit each day. Sooo grateful we have a passion to follow.
Did not know of Dewing so it was great to see some of his great work. Can kind of see the similarities to how Vanderpool handled the big shapes over the details. All tho from what I could see Vanderpool was designing the shadow shapes more where dewing seems to want to lean a bit more linearly.
@@deanwhite6064 definitely search dewing out. I am having such a great time videoing the working and reading the stories.
i loved hearing her story during the painting process! i feel like doing so makes the painting more meaningful and builds awareness that there is a person with their own unique story behind the portrait.
Thank you, that is how Scott feels also.
Loved the Dewing book demo. What a pastel master. Thanks for this, Sue.
I was watching a video about Vermer and a lot of these commissioned pieces by their patrons were used as pin-ups and kept in their wardrobes (pre-Playboy), that would explain the size. Do you think this is a valid explanation? Au Revoir chicken wranglers, I will bid you and Scott adieu.

I just begun to watch this video and am excited about two women artists talking about their work. I turned 75 in May!
Thank you for a wonderful hour and a quarter with Kathy Anderson. I think I had a smile on my face the whole time, she does bring out the glee, joy, and delight in a person. I think that is why she paints flowers, the warmth, color, and beauty flow out the end of her brush onto the canvas. Nancy's show at the Salmagndi Club, NYC and your Scotland trip both are in your Artist's Diaries, and I would encourage everyone to check them out if they would like to see more of the effervescent Nancy Anderson, and you teaching a workshop. Both of you are beautiful inside and out, and true artists that love what you paint. I am sure each of you had a glass of wine, so now I will go and have one. Cheers!
She does bring joy !! I will get her to do this again either in person or over zoom and make her get a microphone or get closer to the computer !!! I didn't show all the silliness of them trying to get her set up beforehand. I should of.. that would have been gold.
That was great Susan. I have become aware of how good Kathy is through your videos. I watched the whole thing while doing dishes and grabbing a quick lunch. Susan, thank you so much for sharing such personal aspects of yourself and your process with the artist community; it means so much to me as a young artist to have the benefit of your knowledge. I especially appreciate the honesty, integrity and vulnerability exhibited in your interview with Scott-it is so validating to know that no matter how accomplished one may be, to wholly engage in the arts means that we must necessarily be willing to subject ourselves to a constant struggle toward perfection with the understanding that we will never achieve it. Thank you and please than Scott for understanding how important your interview with him is and that there are those who both benefit and appreciate immensely from your generosity. ❤❤
