Kia ora, such amazing birds - instantly fell in love with them since visiting your beautiful country for the first time in 2008. We also saw lots of them when returning in 2010 and 2012. Hopefully we'll be able to return soon 👍 Stay safe and healthy, best wishes from Germany to all you Kiwis
The flight looks fast and far, but it ‘only’ flew around 180m in the 25 seconds before landing. The initial heading was directly away from the hut to the tree line (11 seconds, ~80m, 60° heading) and then turns to 100° heading for 14 seconds (~100m). It looks like this is just on the tree line just below the main track, and probably visible from there (especially if you know you’re looking for a kea making a fuss).
I just saw this video on a national news/political commentary show here in the States. I immediately recognized Luxmore Hut from my many years in Te Anau. Man did this put a smile on my face! Can’t wait to visit this special part of the world again once the borders reopen and appreciate those cheeky Keas in person again!
Impressive! Well worth the hassle! Beautiful footage while the Kea is flying. I had to watch it again, that in flight footage couldn't have been better if it had been done intentionally!
Keas love to chew on stuff - they'll shred the windshield wipers on your car, and have a go at the rubber seal around the windows, too! Pretty funny to see... at least when it's a rental car.
Keas are jerks. I watched one rip apart a leather motorcycle seat (I was in a bus and wasn't able to intervene). To its credit, the bird looked like it was having a jolly good time.
Great video ! :) I know those birds can fly and are danger (Kakapoo cant fly , but can be danger too). How the bird so elegantly flew above the ground holding in his beak not so lightweight device , hmm. Well , i know adult kea parrot are strong , but on video parrot so elegantly flew..
Hilarious video! Good lesson in it though - in an area with keas, never leave anything lying around that you don't want taken. A Scottish guy (I think) lost his *passport* to a kea a few years ago!
An amazing video could be used to study the birds flying ability hope TVNZ paid a royalty payment for use of the video on TV tonight this this video will get millions of views on here soon watch this space
When I was in New Zealand, I was told a story about someone who, at a roadside pulloff, threw his car keys to a kea to watch it play with or attempt to eat the keys. Apparently, that was pretty entertaining until the kea flew off with the car keys!
Great heist caper movie, could probably do with some judicious editing, some parts in the middle seemed to wander and the camera work seems a little "close", a lttle constricting. Speaks to our obsession with materialistic acculimination: nature "strikes back" but the story of the boy who lost his treasure and embarks on a journey of rescue and self discovery against the dark forces of nature also harks back to classic tomes, eg the theft of Mjollnir. Overall a classic in the realm of "found footage", 4.5 out of 5 stars.
I am proficient in the Kea language so I can translate for you. Act cool Jim, just siddle up to it. GET IT, GET IT! I've got it Bob, book it! I'm behind you Jim, hey try to get me in shot! Nah, hang on that bit of cloth is in the shot I'm gonna have to remove it lets land here. Now, how do you change the settings? Is that better? Jim, you're shooting into the sun, turn around How did he find us? Leg it!
Adorable! & one of the earliest lessons you learn about kea. Don't leave ANYTHING out, if they can't take it, they'll investigate by dismantling. They're so amazing, so entertaining, such wonderful birds (but maybe I'd feel differently if I was one of those people who've lost a set of keys to these mischievous parrots) 😝
Honestly, if Keas were affected by rubber, they wouldn't exist! LOL, they are almost like puppies for a tourist. Adorable, come when you call them and destroy anything they get access to. Usually, they spend most of their time searching for food. When tourists just feed them they have to find other things to occupy their time and it's usually mischief.
Respect for the kids that somehow managed to chase down this flying marvel.
It’s a tagged owned bird I’m
Guessing
Not an Owned bird. Keas are wild
It’s an always legal way of droning 😃. Even close to airports and sth 😊
Dunno about owned. But it certainly is tagged, metal band on its leg, kinda a giveaway. Those are generally placed when bird is still a little chick.
@@mirthenemrys
This tag allows scientific research..it is inert, non-electronic.
Please tell the story of how that little dude managed to track the bird and find the camera… amazing. Great vid.
I read they heard the sound of the bird poking the camera

Bird: Hmmm this thing is tough... but if I aim it at the sun, maybe I can burn out the sensor
They used to pick out the rubber on your car windscreen where we used to go skiiing, also steal and wreck your shoes if you left them outside.

So glad you kept the original audio as is. It is great to hear the wind passing over their wings. Good job getting the camera back!
If a Kea can't destroy it, it is pretty well made. Best advertisement ever!
Impressive! Well worth the hassle! Beautiful footage while the Kea is flying.

Yeah might as well call this footage "last moments of your life from a bug's perspective if you're caught by a bird"
It's almost like the bird with tracking bracelets did it intentionally huh?
Do you want to compete with a Kea regarding flying performance?
@@peterebel7899 Me?
@@mattpeters4700 The rings are inert...not for tracking electronically...just to be read when the bird is in the hand...or the bush?
Just amazing. Thank you for sharing these incredible images. Massive props to the boy who finds it at the end, too!

The flight sequence was amazing!
Being able to fly is the ultimate superpower
No: controlling the matter is.
Actually it is possible to do it for hours at a time, just like birds do, by only shifting your body 🤙

Damn. Now I want to be a bird instead of a horse.
The footage was amazingly stable, given the camera operator's attempts to eat the camera. I hope that the kea was okay after eating the rubber.
