Hiking the Cumbria Way - Day 2 - ending with a SUMMIT Wild Camp!

- This is day two of walking the Cumbria Way 2024. It was a long solo backpacking day with a cracking wild camping spot on top of the Wainwright 'Great Calva' at 690m in the north of the Lake District National Park.
I left Bays Brown Campsite at 9:30am and started thru hiking towards Mickleden past the Langdales Pikes. Towards the bottom at Mickleden is the start of Stake Pass towards Rosthwaite Fell. This is a really nice ascent hiking alongside Stake Gill on the Cumbrian Way.

After the summit (478m) I made my way towards Derwentwater stopping at Flock-Inn Tea Room, Rosthwaite for some lunch.
I stopped again at Keswick to watch England play Denmark before heading up to the Northern Fells.
I decided to go slightly off piste and summit camped on Great Calve (690m) a short distance from Skiddaw House.
A tough end to a long day, but it was well worth it for the epic views of the Northern Fells and watching the sun set.
The backpacking and camping gear I took is listed below:
I buy my 3F UL Gear tents from Camperlists who stock all variants. All prices includes VAT and Duty and they're all genuine unlike many copies on AliExpress and Amazon.

How very entertaining and lovely to watch ♥️
Beautiful walk, epic scenery, well done on covering that milage, I wouldn't do those long miles these days😊
Andy top video has always your a absolute 😊😊machine but down to earth and love what you do thats why we watch your videos
The Flock Inn also make a very nice scone with clotted cream- and huge cuppa teas! ☺️ deffo worth a visit!
HI Andy, brilliant mate, we stopped at the Flock Inn on the trail a few weeks ago and had the homemade lamb pastie with relish......how bloody nice are they. You should have tried the huge bowl of homemade ice cream too.....that was mega.
Loving watching your trip, brings back some great memories. I couldn't have done it in three days though, I'd have been bolloxed! Haha
I had the same lamb pastie! 😋
I’ve the exact sleeping combo! It’s an amazing setup. Beyond comfy and a real luxury when camping yet still light and small enough for backpacking. Side sleeping no issue at all. Highly recommended.
Didn't notice the Zenbivy before. I love mine.
I love it!!!
6:12 amazing F15 👍🏻
They were flying low through the Langdales too. I got some amazing photos!
Great skill banging 27mls as well as recording your hike. Doing the route in three days is certainly a massive achievement, well done Andy
Great job Andy
I love my walking poles they help me out so much
Fantastic Andy, what an epic 2 days so far.
Dungeon Ghyll fav place in the lakes
love all your videos. you're my fave go to for reviews for new gear. you were also my very 1st backpacking you tuber i came across. :)
Beautiful video hope you enjoyed your trip ❤
Great vid thank you 👍

Awesome man hope getting out for a camp on the weekend
Another interesting great video Andy. I've just this month forked out for a new Rab Neutrino sleeping bag and it is very warm and comfortable, but after seeing that Zenbivvy system it looks unbelievable, very jealous of that! You can tell they've really thought it through. Cheers
Hiya Andy ..Great video on one of my fav trails ..In 3 days is some going massive kudos....The food pouch you are using is it decent and if so where from ...cheers..keep on going👍🏻😁👍🏻
Great videos again but banging out those miles for us mere mortals is way too hard. Would be nice to point out some camp spots after 15 mikes etc
Loving this series mate! Keep them coming. Andy, what mic do you use?
Hi Andy great couple of videos, planning on doing the cumbria way soon. Can I ask what size zenbivy that is , they do a reg, large and XL also which foot box is it the fast footboy or convertible footbox and did you use the 25 degrees or 10 degrees one, would the 25 be good in autum do you think
I’ve got the 25F version with the standard footbox. Mine’s a large with a wide header. The 10F would be a great 3+ season set up 👍
@@BackpackingUKThanks Andie, by standard do you mean the version with the drawstring in the footbox ?
Nice video as usual. I feel you with the extra long days haha. Just the way it is with family and work. In an ideal world, doing these things in more days would be better for the body and overal immersion but I do also like the physical challenge these big days bring. How do you find the rapide btw? Been looking into it but reading mixed reviews. Atb, Sam.
The Rapide is unbelievably comfy. I cannot fault it for comfort and the weight and pack size are really good too. The only negative would be it struggles under 0 degrees.
Cracking vid.. thanks for scouting it out for me for my trip in July. Did you find Woofs Cave in Langstrath valley?
No, I had no idea it was there!
@@BackpackingUK even when you know where it is, it's still hard to find 🙂 I remember the first time I found it... five of us must have walked past entrance 4 or 5 times and had basically given up and found it staring at us in the face.
If you ever go near Langstrath valley again, I can highly recommend the food in the Langstrath Inn (normally requires booking and has a very nice pint of wainwrights) or the Hikers Bar Annex to Scafell Hotel
Andy great video and massive achievement. Did you buy new boots or were they the same as the WHW? Asking as those Ultra 4s have poorer reviews and I thought you had the 360s? I did it in X Ultra Pioneers and they were fantastic.
WHW was 360’s, CW was Ultra 4’s 👍
Awesome stuff, the Cumbrian Way is on my radar with a similar approach to yours of longer days. Would you do such long days again or would you take a little longer over it?
I'm always pressed for time with home and work life. Fortunately I'm fairly fit so I can cope with the long days. However, in the ideal world, I would have taken an extra day for both the CW and WHW. I think most people take 2 extra days for both.
Hiking and wildcamping...depends on where you live! Don't know about you, but I just remember Clarkson's F15 vomit flight... don't think high g-forces are for me. You? Q. What did your gramps fly?
I'm fairly sure he flew a Meteor (amongst other planes) before leaving the RAF to go and fly for British Airways. It wasn't a jolly, he once has bullet holes in his plane!
I did it in 3 days last year myself. I camped just off the path before the hostel. I didn’t even realise it was there until the next morning.
From the Keswick side it's completely surrounded by trees so you wouldn't know it was there!
Which size Mo pack are you using here Andy? How was it for comfort?
50L and size medium (I’m 5’8”). Don’t go thinking it’ll be comfy with 15kg in it, you’ll be disappointed. I’d say 10kg, 12kg at an absolute push all-in.
That's really helpful, many thanks
Hey Andy! What weight are you hauling in the pack? About to do the Herriot Way and need to lose weight. Cheers…
Approx 10kg all-in, West Highland Way was 15kg all-in.
@@BackpackingUK cheers 👍🏼 Hope you like the ZB system…have exactly the same and it’s great. Expensive, but worth..
How many hours did that 27 miles take?
Probably around 10 🤷🏻♂️
Brilliant! Great job of getting the message across 😊. 🫡👍🏼👏😊
