  • In this video, well install and configure ESXi 7. First, we'll connect to the ESXi 7 ISO Image and install ESXi using the default installer.
Then, we'll configure basic settings like IP address, Hostname and SSH using the Direct Console User Interface.
After that, we'll connect to the ESXi 7 host using the Embedded Host Client to configure Networking for iSCSI including Jumbo Frames.
Then' we enable the Software iSCSI Initiator, configure Port Binding and add Dynamic Discovery for our iSCSI SAN.
Last, we're going to configure NTP by IP address.

This was extremely helpful as I am setting up new vmware esxi 7 hosts by myself for the first time, thanks!

A ton of info in a short amount of time. Very well done. I'm trying to decide between ESXi, xcp-ng, and Proxmox - or maybe stick with VirtualBox - for my R & D environment(s) at home (of course) for testing my "Software defined Everything" for the 2 cloud books I'm writing. This gave me a lot of the foundations and a lot to think about. My background is mostly with AWS and GCP with some ESXi through the console and a fair amount through the PowerShell cmdlets. PowerShell was needed for "lift and shift" conversions and transfers after the company I was working for got sold to an aggregator of cloud-SaaS software companies.

Thank you for the great tutorial. Now I need to set up a second host to access the same freenas iscsi storage. I think I have configured them both correctly, but the vmotion seems slow. Do you have a video on that?

Why do we need another vSwitch? I am NIC teaming and my uplinks are taken, I can't add another vSwitch. I keep getting there error The VMkernel virtual NIC adapter vmk0 has multiple physical uplinks. when trying to add the vmk0 (management network) into the iscsi port binding.

out of the box my ESXi could see only the iSCSI from the default kernel interface, even if I had only one physical link per virtual switch and kernel interface. After a long day of research, inspired from this video, I disabled the software iSCSI adapter, restarted the server and for each port group Override Failover order set to Yes even if I had only one interface for each port group. Then I enabled back the software iSCSI adapter and follow the steps indicated in this video. The result was successful but I had to add static targets because the list was not auto populated even after enough time. My concert is that while is working fine now, the No port bindings shows again in the properties, so in case I need to add another connection I probably have to repeat all over the procedure.

how do I install VMWARE tools to ESXi so that it can be installed to VMs?

You don’t install VMWare tool on ESXi (host). Tool need to be installed on VMs only, but you will need to have downloaded the ESXi iso that has tools integrated into it. There’s different ESXi ISOs, some with some without tools to download.
