- New Rear Control Arms For My Smart ForTwo 450 | Has That Fixed The Knocking?
Legends! Remember that time when my Smart ForTwo 450 went bang? I do ... thankfully Dad was on hand to rebuild the entire engine. But we didn't touch the gearbox.
The series is on the Channel ... But if you fancy more smart car woes ... here it is.
After a recent video trying to diagnose gearbox faults ... Dad noticed a knocking from the rear of the car and discovered the rear control arm bushes were totally broken. In this video. We replace them!

I agree 😊
I had Chicken, Pork doesn't agree with me 😂. Nice work "Dad" you never let us down or your son 😎.
☺️☺️
3:18 I'd recommend removing those axle tube bungs. There are holes further back that let water in and you can also get condensation in blocked off tubes. They need to be able to air and drain.
We had the same thought and have now cut notches in them to allow water to drain 😊👍
Cracking work keep noise free for while😊. It kinda reminds me of the doing control arms on my a4 b6 getting them all lined up. So there is no tension on them.
Excellent! 😊
Well done Pete and Jon you have both worked hard again and enjoyed the banter! Great to see a easy fix and the smart will be back driving at its best
All the best to you all Daniel
Thanks 😊
Excellent nice easy fix, that's what I like at my time of life Jon , 😁 👍
Thanks 👍
A other great video guys👌💪👌 love to meet you both, your dad go's in to great detail what he's doing 💪👌👌 love it ,thxs again, take care👌👌
Thanks 👍
dads better than superman lol
Absolutely
Hmm, just did this job and didn’t think to remove the X brace, I removed the rear panels/ crash bar/ exhaust instead. This makes more sense!
Next time 🤣🤣
Great video, guys. I was wondering, why are the front wheels set so far inside the arches? Looks like it could do with some spacers up front?🤔😀
Front needs some new shocks absorbers we think ☺️ I've bought them ... They just need fitting 🤣
Just get it welding the bk box £30 tops. Happy days
Ah the baffles in the exhaust are pretty knackered so it's going to be a new one in the end 😃
12:47 NOPE, there was definitely never another person who used to do it as well. lol
(well, ok there was a guy who used to help me out about 20 years ago who took a load of ideas I had, teamed up with 5 friends and tried to build a site better than mine but even 6 against 1, mine is still going and their site has been dead for 10 years except for a short reprieve 3 years ago).

I think the phrase we need here is .... "Don't settle for imitators" - others can try. They fail ;)
That 'stuff' is probably Coca-Cola, its a grate rust buster for bolts!!
Ah that's handy to know! We will have to give it a try in the future
Hi where did you order the arms from?
Ebay - 2 x Rear Lower Control Arm For SMART FORTWO 450
@@JonCoupland thank you.
Surely its lamb on Easter Sunday?
For reference I did pork ha ha ha ha ha
🤣🤣
From personal experience the paint/powder coat finish on those aftermarket arms is not good, so you might want to get some underbody wax (e.g. dinitrol) on them sooner rather than later. After a couple of years mine were so rusty with very deep pitting that I changed them again even though the bushes were ok. Also the genuine Mercedes fron disc shields I fitted three years ago are completely rotted at the bottom, so even genuine parts can be poor quality these days 😡
Great idea! Will be under sealing this car soon also 😊
Amazing that only took 40 minutes.
Dad's on it 🤣
Have the people opposite your dad got a MK1 Citroen C5? :O 2:34
They certainly have
Wo try that on a mondeo 😂
I bet it's not as much of an easy job? 😊
Why talk in inches on a totally metric var!! ??
It's just how I was brought up in ft and inches 😊👍
