The one that impressed me the most was the 4840. OMG, someone still owns a cultivator and knows how to use it😳. So many chemically cultivate today, it was so nice to see an actual cultivator in use. I did notice that 5020 was a row crop version too. Nice videos.

Yeah I'd say most farmers dont know what a row cultivator is anymore. My family farms organic crops so the only wasy for us to weed is to cultivate

So much classic, vintage green iron! I love it. You pretty well captured the high points here. There are lots of these things around our way still -- 5020s, 4555s, 4955s, even an 8100 just like this one (but factory exhaust) just down the road. Cousin's husband has a 4560. The 4760 here is just exceptionally beautiful. Great video as usual.

Would you consider doing a segment showing and explaining about different types of tractors and their applications. Wheatland, row crop, high crop, orchard, vineyard etc. I would find that very interesting. And maybe even some specialty machines for one use only. Potato harvesters, wheat combines, cotton pickers, walnut harvesters, tile plows etc.

The 4840 was the one I use to drool over as a kid growing up on a farm in South Africa. My father had 16 John Deere tractors, most in the the 70 to 90 hp range. From 2120, 2130 and 3130. Very good tractors, we worked them hard, very hot and dusty climate to!

Enjoyed it. We had a John Deere 6030 on our farm and I thought that had to be the limit of 2WD power. Then I saw the 500 hp. Honey Bee. It was built by the Honey Bros in Frontier Saskatchewan. They pulled an 80' Friggstad chisel plow with it. It was never for sale; only used on their own farm and recently is shown at fairs. It has a Cummins V12 and a 13 speed trans. Two very big wheels off an earth mover do all the pulling. Dualled of course. You might consider following up on that and doing a video. I think they built 2 of them and still use them on their farm.

@@leebob86 Oddly enough at 12 or teen years is not usual on a family farm. I don't think big city folks realize how fast and mature a young teen on a farm can be. Its funny how parents worry about their kids at 16 or 18 driving a car! Hell at the same age that guy or girl has driven farm equipment. That is 10X more challenging and can cost over $200,000+

It's kind of an evolution thing. In the 60's there were no 4x4 tractors and now I don't think you can buy a new tractor without it. Same with cabs. A weather front was like a luxury option then but can you get a big tractor with no cab today? Same thing with pickups. We never had a 4x4 in the 60's but we got by. Now everyone has 4x4 pickups. Times are changing no they've changed!!
Now I need to rest. I'm feeling a little queasy after seeing so much green stuff on a Sunday morning 😛

The JD 5020 was just an upgraded 4020 on “Steroids”. The 4020 & 5020 were so rugged and well made. They could be neglected in Preventive Maintenance and if the Battery was able to start them up you could roll out and do your chores. Actually these were some of JD best mid to high power tractors. So well made. Just like there old Grandpa JD “D” as so many are still chugging along.... I’m very angry that Our Presidential Administrations from the late 1970’s have let Our Farmers and the Farm Equipment Manufacturer’s down. I would have to say my favorite in this video would have to be the 5020. I spent a lot of time on one as a teenager. It had a cab with an AC unit that didn't work. Hated it in the middle of summer as it was like sitting in an oven with the heat that poured through the hydraulic levers in the dash. It was nice on the frosty morning after a couple rounds of working it. Did a lot of cultivating with a 3 point cultivator(24 foot I think it was), that was fun as it was a little heavy for the tractor and it would do wheelies when coming out of drainage ditches since you had to lift for them but it would land smooth on the big balloon tires it had on the front. Scared me the first time it happened.

I didn't know it at the time but i was told that the john deere 4000 low profile with the power shift transmission was a rare tractor. It came off of a pecan orchard and it had big low profile fenders and under slung exhaust. The exhaust was ran under the tractor out the back from the factory so it wouldn't get knocked off by the tree branches on the pecan orchard. It was factory ordered that way. I was told that it was actually rare and was worth a little money. Especially with the power shift option instead of the synchro transmission. I never even thought about it all those years grown up runnen that tractor on the farm. But after i read about it being rare i got to thinken about it realized that i've never seen another one.

just goes to show that farmers farmed all those years without hi-tech taking over, the real days of farming. todays society has lost an art i grew up on case 2wd tractors actually having to steer and we got it done every year in the same timely manner

Lot of people say the 6030 was way underrated as far as horsepower. I have read the were more in the 250hp range and could be turned up to almost 300hp...

Great video! I am wondering why the exhaust pipe on the 4760 is on the side and the 4955 are not. Most of the older John Deeres have the exhaust in the center of the hood. I thought that the JD tractors in the EU had the side mounted exhaust but I see some in the US was this an option or a later model of the series?

It still amazing to me that until the 80's, there were few FWD tractors, most farming was done with just 2wd.

1983 was the bench mark year where FWA started to gain market share over 2wds.

@@bigtractorpower thanks for correction on FWA / FWD, I was pretty sure they didn't make front wheel driven-only tractors!! Maybe the Kirovets K700 but when would you switch a Russian tractor like that to 2WD on purpose!

I like them all their John Deere. Back in the late 60's a neighbour bought a new 5020. That was the talk of the coffee shop. The older farmers shook their heads and woundered why the hell would anybody need a tractor that big.

What does everyone think the maximum horsepower should be with 2 wheel drive?

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  4 года назад

It can be 500 hp. Just have to tie it to the ground.

    • @thevox1075

That requires weight, which would lead to compaction.

    • @captaindee6130

@@thevox1075 But power requires weight for traction in all configurations -- 2WD, FWA, 4WD, whatever. So compaction is always a concern. But yeah, I agree that going that big, especially on 2 axles like the Fendt 1000s, would result in atrocious axle- and individual wheel weights, and no amount of reduction in air pressure is sufficient to avoid compaction at some point. I think it would be really difficult to put the power down on any 2WD in challenging conditions with much more than 200 hp without resorting to some extreme tactics, like LSW 1400 rear tires or something.
