Always wanted a 4440 so for this past Christmas I bought one. Also have a 4450. 4440 quickly becoming my favorite. Something special about the 40 series. 26,000 is what I spent on myself for Christmas. New seat , alternator an hydraulic outlets she's operating perfectly!! It'll operate past my time on earth.
I still see a bunch of these beautiful iron horses running today a testament to how good this series of tractors were today they have become entirely to expensive and complicated
Plus Deere Dealerships won't let you fix them yourself, even though you own the machine outright. That's just insane. Don't know if any other brand has adopted this 'marketing strategy', but it seems to me to be a good way to lose customers !
Thanks for the memories. Thanks to an accident I'm a quadriplegic now and the only thing I can operate is my wheelchair but I grew up driving the 4440 from a young boy and into my 20s. The 4630 was our highest horsepower tractor on the farm but the 4440 had a special place in my heart. I suppose the countless hours I spent in it pulling the discbine in the hay fields has something to do with that.
Quad Range offered 16 forward and 6 reverse speeds. Powershift in alternate places, 1-2 & 3-4.basicly added Hi/Lo shifting to the Synchro Range. Great, solid tractors that were a natural progression for farmers that relied on 4020's as main working units.👍🚜
Good video and nice history. We own a 4450 w/mfwd and it’s been a spectacular tractor. We also own a 4240 my grandpa bought new in 1981. I’ve always wanted a 4440
The 540/1000 PTO is why this model sold so well the next model up only had 1000rpm PTO. The best thing John Deere did on the new 8000 series was the optional large 1000 PTO the small 1000pto and 540pto. Many times they are used for batwing mowers, disk mowers and round balers, for the ride & air conditioning farmers like to enjoy the bigger tractors even the flexibility of running an old auger on 540pto is nice.
Just a side note,,,,,,,,,,Quad range transmission had 16 speeds forward and 8 reverse, had that transmission on my 4030 and syncro range on my 4630. 4440 was a great tractor to replace the 4430 plus it had twice as many lights, GREATLY NEEDED. Always wanted a 4640 myself. Thanks for the video.
The 1979 4440 I bought new was a nightmare. Bolts were loose. Seat hydraulics leaked. When I would turn the heater fan on, the radio would turn all static. The back wheel fell off while I was plowing cause it never got tightened at the factory. When the dealer put the rock box on, they stripped the cast frame threads. Then JD finance went to 20% interest. Never bought another tractor again financed by Deere! Best economics lesson I ever got! Oh, and the air conditioning worked good only in winter.
In europe was the option given to get machanical AWD on them: 4040S and 4240S . Enjoy your videos! If i had a free wish: Forage Harvesters 5200 and 5400 from '72.
The optional seat was well worth the money. It could also be set to rock front to back. You wouldn’t believe how much better and easier the ride is with that seat. Also it seems the drawbar sticks out further. It’s much easier to see it when hooking up .
For what it's worth, Deere did continue the syncro/creeper trans in the 40 series. I've got a video of our 4240 with such a transmission on my channel. The 4440 was a wonderful tractor. I wish we still had ours.
2:35 The quad range transmission actually had SIXTEEN forward speeds and six reverse. My dad and uncle both had 4440s. One thing not mentioned was the much larger fuel tank - about 60 gallons compared to around 40 gal. on the 4430. That hydra-cushion seat was revolutionary and a real back-saver on rough ground. It's really hard to imagine any shortcomings of the 4440. From baling hay to plowing, they were a dream to drive.
My dad bought a 480-acre farm/ dairy in 1962. I was 6 years old. The old lady that sold it to him, her husband passed away, and none of their children wanted to farm it. So Dad got it at a steal. It came with a lot of farm equipment. My Dad was a John Deere man, but the farm came with 2 practically new Farmall IH560's. And an Oliver 770. And of course, by the time my feet could reach the clutches and break, my dad had me on one. In the 70s, he sold one of the Farmalls to my uncle and bought a brand new John Deere 4020. And then I thought we were in high cotton when he bought a John Deere 4440 with a/c cab. I loved farming with my Dad and Grandpa, who lived with us. But in December of 1982, I lost my Dad from a massive heart attack a week before Christmas and my grandpa on Christmas day😢. I wanted to keep running the farm. But my dad never made a will. So my hateful mother sold all the land except for 5 acres. I begged her not to sell, and I would even buy the land. But she made a will and gave everything to my sister. When she died, I didn't even go to her funeral! I was not her pick. I should have taken her to court and contested her will. (You only have a year). And to this day, my always unwed, ugly ass sister still lives in the old farmhouse by herself. I hope the old farmhouse falls down around her one day. I truly miss those farming days sitting all day on a tractor smelling the fresh dirt. But most of all, I miss my dad and grandpa.
I love the 4440. I chronically go on hayrides and I’ve been pulled by a 4440 multiple time at the farm I go to. I always associate it with this one hot tractor driver who looks like Adam Calhoun. So everytime I see a 4440 I get a funny feeling because I think of the hot tractor driver. I also see lot of sound gard tractors in my hood cruising up the streets n stuff
@@caseycouch1660 we have a 4555 and a 4955. Our 4555 pulls a box blade while the 4955 now pulls graint cart however it used to be on a baler. We imported it from the EU so it’s to European spec. Pretty neat tractor. We’ve also had our fair share of 4960’s
@@thatranger92 I have a granddaughter who refuses to run anything but a 4255, we found her 2 cream puffs. There’s a 2955 a pair of 4955s in the collection. The 4440 improved a very good innovative 30 series that had a few issues. Amazing how much work these tractors still do. 158 still a great loader too.

8 you better look again, there is only 6 reverse speeds in a quad range A,B,C,
My 1977 4230 with quad range has 16 forward and 6 in reverse. My 1972 4320 with synchro range has 8 forward and 2 reverse.
Owned 3 of them. Great tractors.

They weren’t common but there were 40 series with the synchro-range transmission. Neighbor had a 4240 4 post roll -guard open station tractor.
Please do a history on the M, 40, 420, 430 series of tractors by John deere. Do one like you did on the 70

Actually John Deere introduced THe New Iron Horse tractors with a special section in the September/October 1977 edition of The Furrow.
Super Tractor 💯❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Just try to find one that isn't totally worn out due to the heavy continuous daily use they were subjected to. A near impossible task.
Very true! Most of them out there are over 15k hours
FINALLY
Thank you for watching!👍🏻
Very interesting good job
Thanks for watching👍🏻
1 of deeres very best!
466 had way better torque than 404!
IF ONLY they would have changed to a Cross Flow head on the 466. That would have been a SOLID engine.
I got one pretty good tractor
😊
4640 is best
That’s Ralph joswick favorite
Why does it have a cage?
Quad Range is 16 forward not 6
Hardest starting highest fuel consumption of the other series. Newer and older

Still lettin er eat
You showed a 4240 more in the video than a 4440
ya it was the only 40 series tractor I had videos of
I guess the 2440 wasn't important enough to talk about
Most favored ?? Naw .. popular yes. Most favored is when people will pay . That's a 4455 according to auction prices.
its the most favored out of the 40 series, I agree with the 445 being a better tractor but i was just talking about the 40 series. thanks for watching
No the. 4640 is 😂
Take a international 1486 any day
But useless in the forest 😂
Amazing engineering!!
Fun fact, Jesus himself is John Deeres lead engineer...
