that is by far the best manure spreader ever made i used one of these for years and other than replacing bear claws that thing was indestructible and it worked great
We used one of those New Idea spreaders you spoke about early in the video. It was used primarily to support a dairy, some heifers, calves. It was 95 bu (I think?), with three beaters - two spike that broke up the load, one paddle beater at the rear to throw the material. It had a chain/bar mechanism on the floor to pull the load back toward the beaters. It was ground driven, one wheel driving the chain/bar unloading mechanism, the other wheel driving the beaters. Two hand levers at the front could be reached from the tractor seat, one for the chain/bar, the other for the beaters. The first one had notches to control the speed at which the chain would pull the load toward the beaters. The second one controlled the drape of a large chain link across a drive sprocket on the drive wheel. We pulled the spreader with a Case VA, about 28 hp. In the Winter, one very full load every day. It was loaded with a carrier on tracks - shovel the gutters out with shovel, run the carrier on the tracks behind the stanchions, then run on track out the door, over the spreader for dumping. If the fields were too wet, the manure had to be stockpiled, the pitched into the spreader in the Spring. The spreader was also used to support 500 chickens - 6-7 loads every few weeks. This was all hand loaded, forks, shovels. Yes, "cleaning out the barns" was my job - shovel the gutters clean, into the carrier, then out to the spreader.
I sure could've used that back in the sixties. I know all about handling manure by hand, first onto a flat deck wagon or a stone boat. Then fork it off in the field and go back for another taking a stook of 10 bales along back in. Horses were used to pull the wagon and stoneboat in those days. We never had any kind of a decent chore tractor.
I ran across this video and it brought back memories of about 55 years ago. I wish I had a dollar for every pound on manure loaded with a pitch fork. I'd be a rich man now.
The 4440 Is truly a masterpiece. My farm has one and it works perfectly. We used to use it on a manure spreader, but we got rid of our cattle. Those tractors are unstoppable... Unless there's a fire.
I believe what we have here Ladies and Gentlemen is rare sighting of a bigtractorpower standing at the edge of the field! LOL Great video as always Sir!
Had a780 and loved it ,but switching to liquid manure decided to sell that speader. Thanks for the video so I can show the younger crew what we used back in the 80’s and 90’s.
I used to have to do that with an open station tractor. Not good. Every once in a while, a stray piece would make it's way toward the seat and you wouldn't know it until it hit.
Pretty cool to learn about what they made at the Welland Works, I've never been there, but apparently it's only a few minutes from the beach I go to in the summer. I think the Welland Works had something to do with the Dain company that Deere bought out in the 1900s, as well.
That’s awesome to see that tractor out there spreading them anywhere I must take a while though the spread her to cover that field and I do have to say there’s a farm down the road from me whenever they are spreading manure on the field there’s something about the smell I just enjoy about cow menu or maybe I’m weird or something
Box spreaders do not cover a bunch of ground. This farm had two spreaders covering this field as it was going into corn. Often on a larger field a farm will spread on it all winter in the off season to get it fertilized.
i have a nice simple NH195 chain floor twin horizontal beaters and it does all our 150 cow/calf operation needs, usually a week to ten days by myself, saves hiring in a crew (which there isn't allot of these days). put these little spreaders up beside a 32ft Bunning Lowlander for shits n giggles eh.
In a zoo the monkeys fling their poo at people like that spreader did when you were behind it filming. Does that type of spreader work with wet manure as good as it flings the dry stuff like today?
In my experience with a new holland 185 no they don't work to good for wet slop as soon as you lift the rear gate you have on but pile on the ground before you can even get the pto going.
Iowa state motto: "IF YOU LOVE THE SMELL OF PIG SHIT, YOU'LL LOVE IOWA!" There is a study on how many tons of manure per animal herd that depicts the human population equivalent. The stats are staggering. The water quality in western Iowa is of great concern. Many farmers practice eco protection with buffer zones and bio-reactors. On our ranch the majority of our crop is hay. However, our ponds are taking a beating from our neighbor's run-off. Nitrates and phosphorus are the larger part of the problem. North of our ranch a farmer was busted for cow manure running off into a creek and pond due to the mass killing of fish. They're not worried about cancer in humans in Iowa. My wife just went through her third cancer surgery in as many years. Now nitrates are being blamed for head and neck cancers.
Dahlmasen in my personal opinion no. Everything’s got a throw away eco bollacks engine. Good that they are turbo charged but they have such a small displacement and such a high boost not to mention all of the particulate burners and the electronics to regulate emissions. The metal as well seems to be of worse quality, in my personal opinion that is

Wow, what a flashback for me. Growing up we had the exact same setup. A 4440 with chrome stacks pulling the exact same manure spreader.
Wow that is very cool.

In this video I did know how to control my eyes between the spreader and the 4440, both are so awesome.
It’s a great combo.
Legendary tractor.
The 4440 is one of the all time greats.
That sounds great with the straight piped exhaust.
You are correct.
Haven't learned that much about spreading poop since we visited Congress in school.

Love the old equipment working they were a reliable spreader we still have ours working on the farm thanks for sharing
Very cool. I was excited to find a 780 in action.
Something tells me that 4440 might have a little more under the hood than the factory 130 ponies. 😉
Nice to see that those old John Deere tractors still working
Love the 4440
Great tractor.
bigtractorpower true mate very very good
Was one of the first cab tractors I learned to operate as a teenager
I need that spreader to do a couple passes over my garden ! Great video.
It would get it growing well.
I go back to when Deere was making the 34,40,54 manure spreaders.Remember the tandem axle 660 & 680 introduced in 1977

The tractor is in very nice shape and sounds great. The kid behind the wheel seems to be in a rush shifting and speeding
It was a nice 4440 with some get up and go in the field.

My favorite tractor. 4440
One of mine too. Solid tractor.
Nice tractor!

That boy don’t look more than 13 drivin that tractor. He’s a heck of an operator. Old 4000 series tractors sure sound good with a straight pipe
He was very focused on his work and did a good job.
13 seems to be the age, that's when I started operating on our farm too
Looks better with out the lights in front. Thats what distinguished it from the 50 series
We ran for years a John Deere 4030 with soundgard cab pulling a 450 Hydra Push spreader.

I was working on a 1/64 scale 4440 when I was watching this video

Awesome video, I ran a 780 behind a Deere 4450 for 13 years. I own a Pik-rite now but it’s not as good. They cheapened it up.
A 4450 and 780 are a perfect 1980’s combination. What do you run your Pik-Rite with?

Not far from
Dyersville.
Audio track from a combine or a baler during the drone footage?
The audio is the spreader and the 4440. The drone was flying right over my head as I was filming in the ground so you hear a bit of the drone buzz.
Spreading' it on pretty thick there. LOL
👍👍
I think that you should come up with a new video, it's called smell a vision lol

You dont really see farming either atleast where I was around Shreveport.
I like finding classic implements to feature.

Jesus de Santos first one I’ve ever seen with them.

It’s a bit more difficult to cover spreading but I like to feature all machines.
I was told a farmer here in southern MN invented this idea and John Deere bought the idea from him the Hydra push idea
From goodhue. I think oreily is their name
It'll take days to spread that field.
They had two spreaders going so I think they would get it pretty well covered in a short amount of time.
There is a farm to my north that uses a 8760 and a 12,000 gallon liquid manure spreader B.T.P....The smell is beyond description!!.
