  • Kevin O’Connor and Chris Vernon answer a listener-submitted mailbag question about Paolo Banchero, Seattle native, potentially leaving Orlando if a Seattle team is added in potential NBA expansion. They then discuss generally the expansion process, how to make newer teams better, and why the depth of the NBA’s talent right now might make this a more interesting time than previous occasions for expansion.

    You guys should do a mock expansion draft where one of you is the gm for Vegas and the other Seattle and pick your 8 protected players on each team then draft from the pool. - Excited Las Vegas nba fan

    A few notes: Charlotte was competitive within its first five years, making the playoffs in Alonzo Mourning's rookie season. From 1993-2002 they never finished below .500, and missed the playoffs (barely) three times. Had George Shinn been a better owner, they might have been the first among their expansion mates (Orlando, Miami, and Minnesota) to win a title. Orlando made the NBA Finals in 1995 (when they beat both Michael Jordan and Reggie Miller in one postseason) and ECF in 1996. Miami took a little longer to get there, but after Mickey Arison bought the team, and hired Pat Riley, they completed their turnaround. Since 1997, they were in the lottery only twice until they won the championship in 2006. The T-Wolves made the playoffs eight straight years beginning the second year of the Kevin Garnett era, just eight years after their founding, and made the WCF in the last year of that run. The Raptors made the ECSF within six years of founding.
    NBA franchises take longer to ramp up after expansion than NHL or MLB because star players are more impactful in the NBA and teams don't get a lot of them in the dispersal draft. Hockey and baseball teams have bigger rosters and have better chances of landing impact players in their dispersal drafts. They also have a larger pool of players through their respective minor leagues. Maybe the route for expansion would be to have the teams enter the G-League first, and then enter the NBA after one or two years of G-League play, with the option to move some of their players as direct hires.

      I really like the relegation system they have in Football in Europe. It keeps teams on their toes at all times (of course, there is always those owners who doesn't really care but that's a topic for a different day).
      One thing I remember when the Vancouver Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors were accepted into the NBA, they had a lot of constraints put upon them that really limited their options to compete. Their first draft, they were limited on their draft positioning, they also had limitations on their spending and on the revenues they get from the league in their first 5 years (I think). I hope they just take those restrictions off and let the new teams compete at a (relatively) equal level than the existing ones. Heck, they can put them in the lottery also and let them fall where they fall.

    • @willingexile3374
      @willingexile3374 Месяц назад +2

      The draft limitations on picking first in the first four years were put in place because of how Orlando got to pick first in 1992/93 especially since their odds for the latter were so low. One solution would be to weight their odds with a sensible formula and let the process go on as usual, as mentioned.
      The spending/revenue issue is sensitive because these new franchises dilute the profitability of the league. Another way to approach this is to allow the new owners to spend as much as they want within the rules and take on the risk of less revenue, and maybe lower the number of restricted years to maybe three at most.
      Relegation is a fun idea but probably not viable for the NBA. However, the NBA should review the profit-sharing model of the league, so stingy owners are not rewarded by receiving greater revenue share and still field crappy teams.

Rhode island , Delaware or Maine jk I'm from New England so I had to try. Cali has four teams why not give New York another team or Chicago another team. Kansas city what about New Mexico or south Carolina? Mexico city is a team Adam silver wants to expand outside USA. Canada could get a second team like British Columbia or Vancouver again but Seattle Las Vegas should be first two teams for sure.

    Every year, everyone wants trades and roster moves that simply don’t exist because the talent doesn’t exist. Expansion will make the entire league worse and you guys all need to stop pushing it.
