No big ego, no complicated terms just simple explanations, no massive lists of unfamiliar tools. Just a modest man setting explaining something I would have previously thought to be well beyond my skill sets. He has shown me if I was physically capable I could do this, I think I'll see if my teenage grandsons want to build it with me for their fishing. Cooper has a fantastic role model.
I can't describe how much I enjoyed to watch this video! It was educational, inspiring, exciting....and he explained things in an easy way to understand. My respect to this boat building man!
Thanks Sam. I have wanted to build a boat for myself for many years, but have thought I never had the time or experience. After watching your video on the Poliwog I have been encouraged to build my dream.
By far the most informative video on stich and glue boat building by one of the foremost masters of the technique. I say it could have been longer. I think it goes hand in handwith Sam's book. Thank you.
Thanks, I needed that! I'll be building a boat over the next couple years and I've had some lingering questions that you answered verry well. Though my boat will be built using an inner framework and it'll be powered with an outboard, the process will be surprisingly similar in all other respects. It really helped to see someone doing the proceedures as opposed to just reading about them in a book and looking at pictures. I'm now looking forward to it instead of being aprehensive about it.
Still a great video in 2018; simple and informative. Stitch and glue building method seems to be becoming more and more popular. I would love to build one of the Devlin duck boats as well as a Tolman skiff someday!
i bought the plans for a little bigger boat from Devlin boats . . . had a couple of questions, and even found a mistake in a plan, wrote to Sam and he was SO helpful . . . I can't wait to get started . . . this video is the reason I got involved. thank you sam!!!
Great explanation and instructions of building a boat, no matter what shape of a boat you build, is an excellent procedure for a good finish , I’m very thankful for your teaching.
Thank you sir. My son and I are about to build a boat from plans and your video was very well done and easy to follow. Again, thank you for sharing your love of boat building with us. Mark
Wasn't aware that he was from my hometown. Lots of memories boating on budd Inlet and out in Boston Harbor. Helped my grandpa restore a wood dinghy when I was a little kid. Might have to look into some of his plans.
I thought this was going to be a wood boat but a fiberglass layer was put on it. They always say how easy it is, but lets be real. This guy is an expert and like anything, its harder when you try yourself.
WOW this was a very informative video on stitch and glue boat construction. I been watching alot of videos on building plywood boats and none of them are this good. You truly are a master boat builder. I ecspecially like the end of the video when your'e rowing around. That boat move around the lake like a fish in the water. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of boat building with everyone. Keep up the good work.
I don't know if I would actually build a boat but this has been one of thwe most interesting and informative videos I have seen on youtube, Just EXCELLENT!! Thanks
This is a really well-done video. As simple as this boat is, its still a pretty ambitious project. It just makes me appreciate how much harder it would be to build a larger boat.
Bought "Guppy" dinghy plans off Sam's website a week ago, and am super excited to get started. I have wanted to build a Devlin boat for quite some time now. Thanks for putting this video up for a little help with the process.
Sir you are so naturally corny it's precious.. I had to watch the video several times for new shop set up ideas and wood worki planning and execution skills. Nice work !
Wow what a Great Video! Nice Clear Consise Tuition, what more could you ask for. And many thanks for the Feet Inches & Eighths explanation Boat plans and Lofting don't seem so Daunting Now Excellent !!
That is one of the best You tube videos I ever seen! Informative without too much talk, easy to follow and excellent graphics. Well done. Now... please, please, please do one for a wooden speed boat.
lofting???? you got to be kidding me.thought that was a lost art..i have been building boats for over 40 years,,have lofted many boats,,from 18 to 55 footers..when i started boat building all boats were wooden and all were ribbed and planked... all keels and stems were hand cut and fitted.good to see someone still has the skills to craft a boat from scratch a nice boat, great vid..
I am going through the beginning stages of my first boat build. I have recently decided to use the stitch and glue method. I figure out that this method would be simplest for my first build. The type of boat will be a center console skiff fishing boat. I will be a little difficult than the row boat you just did but it is what is needed for my inland lakes I fish with my son and daughter. I will try to post some vids of the process. Wish me luck.
A mini master class on stitch and glue. Thank you!! Please don't ever remove this as I (and I'm sure others) come back to it for a reminder of how it's done.
Thank you for creating one of the best boat building if not one of the best DIY videos I've ever had the pleasure of watching. Unlike too many videos on RUclips yours was presented at the right speed, had all of the information required to do the job, and most of all your voice wasn't like listening to fingernails on a chalkboard; some people have terrible voices and don't know it. I'm looking forward to watching all of your videos and hopefully attempting one of your projects.
@25:30 You can use Ethanol or Isopropyl alcohol, it will dissolve the Epoxy but it's not very good in dissolving oil or fats. Especially Isopropyl alcohol is very weak in dissolving oil. Your oil skin should be fine. And after it, you can still use a hand cream.
Sam I've always enjoyed your inovative boat building and this video is excelent BTW. White vinegar is the best non toxic way of getting un cured epoxy off your skin
Thanks for making this vid. It is the best I have seen. I like the fact the tools are so basic, the only thing I don't have is a circular saw, because I don't like them. So straight forward.
i apreaciate this vidio. i was encouraged to make my own boat just like the one u make and it was a success. had fun making it. i want to make another one but i want to use the same fiber glass sheat that u were using. the only sheats i found were from home depot. they were 8sqft sheats and thicker than the ones u had and when i cut the strips for the seams, the thread would run out of it. where can i buy the same stuff u used please. thanks
a truly excellent video very well explained in a language we can all understand well demonstrated n a brilliant little boat at the end sir thank you very much
I've been to Sam's shop and property outside of Olympia, Wa. The boats are great and hold their value very well. Some re-sell for more then the original cost.
is there a way I can get the specifics (plans) to build this boat? I would greatly appreciate it. By the way, this video is awesome!!! thanks for sharing.

Have you seen my DIY sup project mate? ruclips.net/p/PLAQXLUUtHVUDPyM1_H3GzbqHmXkaMTafn You can build one of these in your garage.

Just saw this today and wanted to thank you for your demonstration of boat building. Great job and a beautiful boat!

That looks like a great little boat! Thank you for sharing your process with us.
Man I wish I had a bigger garage. Nice video, fun and educational.
Awesome instructional. Thank you for the time you took to make this video!
Mr. Devlin is a fantastic teacher. Thank you sir!
Thank you Mr Devlin. Well explained and illustrated. You make it look so easy. From Perth, Western Australia.
This guy is probably a good father to his child.
I have a feeling you're right
A most excellent and informative video! I'm sure I will watch it several times before my boat is finished.
Still a great video in 2018; simple and informative. Stitch and glue building method seems to be becoming more and more popular. I would love to build one of the Devlin duck boats as well as a Tolman skiff someday!
Absolutely awesome build. Best one I've seen yet.
I have learned something new today. I have never seen the stitch method used to build a wooden boat. Genius! Thank you, sir.
An uncommon method...stitch & glue, but it looks affordable and does not require any special tools or molds. I'm liking it the more I watch it.

After I build my new shed, this is project #2. Greatly appreciated!
This is a really detailled and well explained video. Thanks.
It would be also nice to see how you build a boat with old materials.
This is one of the first movies i watched before starting to build boats. Great!
Wasn't aware that he was from my hometown. Lots of memories boating on budd Inlet and out in Boston Harbor. Helped my grandpa restore a wood dinghy when I was a little kid. Might have to look into some of his plans.

Thank you for sharing your skills! Truly beautiful little boat.
Superb training video!!! ...I finally understand "stitch and glue" boat construction... Well done sir, and thanks for taking the time.
Do you happen to understand how to make the layout formula a bit easier to understand? Thank you

Love old school craftsmen bud. Nice job!.
My hats off to you Sam. By far thee best video I've seen. Thanks.
Presumably you can use a router with a chamfering bit to put that 45 degree angle on the keel edges.
presumably yes...
@@samdevlin4655 Presumably a high speed router can remove too much material than desired

That was awesome!!
Thanks so much, you are the Number !
Excellent video; clear and concise. The use of 3D images from the drawings overlaid on the actual parts makes this very easy to understand. Well done.

How do one build a boat from scratch without using anyone design template?
Are there basic rules?
Greta video and a good Teacher. Many thanks

This is THE VIDEO to watch. excellent IN EVERY DETAIL.
thank you...the fastening of the wires answered ALL my worries. ..
Awesome! Thank you for posting this very video.
Nice looking little boat. I'm not sure if you would get away with calling it a "Polliwog" here in the UK nowadays.
At least he didn't call it a Fanny Pack!
Outstanding video, this was very helpful, thank you so much!
+Walter DerCunningham Swindlers! Have sent garbage, and money have not returned.
This was an awesome video. I can totally do this!! Will these plans work if you special order longer sheets of plywood? I would like to build a 14'.
You can patch pieces of wood together with a butt joint, and epoxy another patch piece inside the hull.
there are larger boat designs at devlinboat.com
Great video. I've built several cedar strip kayaks and canoes, but never plywood and never a skiff. This may be my next boat project.
awsome im going to be ordering the plans and by the way you totally rock the mario bro look
How was the skeg attached?
Best how- to boat building video I have seen yet by the way.
رائع ! غاية الروعة !!!
magic JOB !!!
