I admit, I had my reservations when I heard Chris Hemsworth was going to play Orion Pax/Optimus Prime. But once I saw the movie, all that doubt I initially had was washed away. He turned out to be a damn good choice!
And let's just be supportive honestly. Chris Hemsworth is becoming one of the most fun actors. His role in Extraction movies and Furiosa were seriously really good. And as Orion really proves how much good of a voice actor he is
Celebrity casting in Transformers can be a hit or miss such as Orson Welles (G1 Unicron) and Hugo Weaving (Bayverse Megatron 1-3) who were uninterested of Transformers but took it seriously in their performance respectively and got paid for it.
I wasn't thrilled at first I went "oh great a full Marvel cast"that coupled with my initial reaction to that infamous first trailer had me against chris as Oreon pix but as I sat there in the movie theater I couldn't help but root for him and D and completely forget who was voicing him getting lost in his performance He did great
I love how Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry start out sounding like themselves (though Chris mimics an American accent), but as Orion and D-16 become Optimus and Megatron, their voice sound more fitting (Chris' voice even sounds just as deep as Cullen's the moment he becomes Optimus, Brian's more growly voice gives off an angry vibe that fits Megs).
3:28 If I had a nickel every time Chris Hemsworth plays a character who became worthy of a powerful item after making a heroic sacrifice and spin their weapons to deflect enemy attacks, I have two nickels. It isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice.
Something I felt in this movie that I didn't get in other shows was that the voices felt more natural. I don't know how to describe it but it's like the actors are there.
Yeah its like TFP again, the acting just feels more connected. Though it might just be me but Earthspark's voice acting can be a bit clunky, course that might just be cause Megatron and Optimus there kind of have their Va's accents.
@funnyfunnyvalentine7991 How the f was he terrible? He is a younger Optimus before he became leader. He will not sound like Cullen right away! He still embodied the spirit of the character so no, Chris was not terrible
People talk about Orson Welles as Unicron, but what I like the most about celebrity voice acting was getting Leonard Nimoy and Robert Stack as Galvatron and Ultra Magnus. Those were pretty good. Judd Nelson as Hotrod was pretty good too, and I will defend that
The only issue I had with Buscemi playing Starscream was that they didn't cast Jeff Bridges and John Goodman as Thundercracker and Skywarp. I also would have accepted Brendan Fraser and Adam Sandler to complete previous movie trios that Buscemi was a part of. I'm kidding...mostly.
@7:59- Funnily enough, Starscream's VA from Transformers Prime (Steve Blum) actually did additional voices for the film, including the race announcer. Seems like a bit of a missed opportunity to have him reprise the role.
I feel like what makes Chris’s casting work is that he doesn’t attempt at making a Peter Cullen impression. Instead, he makes a spin that’s clearly his own unique style yet still has enough of the warmth and charm we associate with the character. It also helps that he worked with Peter on getting the heart and soul of the character down. Thus, he was able to accomplish the same great things as did David Kaye and Garry Chalk when they were Optimus in their respective shows. Also, controversial opinion time: I actually really like Jake Foushee’s voice acting in Cyberverse. It’s like night and day when you see him in both Cyberverse and the WFC Trilogy. I think the poor guy gets too much hate. The voice direction in the latter series is to blame for that aksksksks. 😭
@@littlemisstfc interestingly enough, I also like Jake as Prime in Cyberverse. I think his tonality works perfect for the show. However, I’m not a fan of him as Prime in the WFC Trilogy.
Hey, there’s some celebrities I’m cool with playing Transformer characters most notably Dwayne Johnson as Cliffjumper, Peter Dinklage as Scourge and Steve Buscemi as Starscream . I even thought about it maybe Hugh Jackman playing Jetfire
As long as the voice fits the character and personality they are going for, I’m fine with it, think of David Kaye as Animated Optimus, Peter Cullen will always be the definitive Optimus Prime because the definitive Optimus Prime is an old, wise, but strong character who represents leadership, courage, and wisdom. Animated Optimus is a character who is both young and rather inexperienced who has yet to learn all the traits that make a definitive Optimus Prime so Peter Cullens voice just wouldn’t fit that version of Optimus, so it only makes sense that a younger sounding voice be given to that version of Optimus, David Kaye was an amazing young Optimus because he managed to still sound like a leader, but one who is still learning all the definitive traits that make Optimus who he is
For how much they spent on celebrities to do the voices... it would have been nice if they all bothered to record in-studio together, & they personally would enjoyed the experience better. & if Scarlett couldn't make it, well, saving $8M would have helped on the back-end. Brian Tyree Henry was great as usual, & was the best value of the VA budget. Lawrence Fishburne, Jon Hamm, & ... Steve Buscemi also acquitted themselves well. Keegan Michael Key prolly would have done it for less, so kudos to his agent[s] getting their cut, but I wish KMK had altered his voice a bit to sound more like the Bumblebee movie version. Thanks for the video!
I 100% agree with you. As long as the performance is great, then that's all that matters. Although, I would also love to see more traditional voice actors be cast in these big animated movies. Bringing more light to their wonderful talents Side note: I feel like celebrity casting also kind of shows that animation is being more of a big deal in Hollywood and not "just for children." Because a lot of people I know still think that way and it drives me crazy, lol
Tbh, I really don’t give a damn about celebrity voice acting as long as they do a good job a the role they’ve been given. And Transformers on is certainly one of them (except for the Mexican dub of course).
I was a little iffy about Steve Buscemi's performance as Starscream, but it makes sense to me now for an older actor to play him because Starscream is significantly older than the miners in the movie.
I feel like kevin micheal keegan would have been better as a young ratchet or ironhide but he did a great job in recapturing the child like energy bumblebee has
As with most people, I did expect a bad job from the casting, in the same vein of casting celebrities for the name. Which is kinda funny as star power didnt exactly boost the numbers for the movie. But honestly its not like Paramount made the best first impression with the first trailer drop for Transformers One, so I think many clamored onto that point. However, the movie was better than expected in tone and narrative, and all the voices chosen do a great job. I especially like Bryan Tyree Henry with his voice change from D16 to Megatron. I like how Chris was not trying to do a Peter Cullen impression, or Chris as himself, but sounds as the naive plucky sometimes short sighted protagonist that was needed. They both have great chemistry in the writing and voice work, like Im suprised they werent in studio. As far as aged Starscream.. honestly I just take it that this Starscream is older. Which is a fun dynamic to have with the Decepticon high command, Starscream being the knocked from grace, more experienced in leadership one, Megatron being the fresh young blood that stirs the masses.
I get why the producers wanted a celebrity cast for the film but I still would’ve preferred actual voice actors for animated media, wether they’re well-known or complete unknowns

I think people have a hard jugement on the casting is because Chris and scarlet where in the mcu how turn their character into literal clowns and so think the actors are not that good but Chris proves that he is not just celebritie he is a great actor
Ok not all celebrity castings are bad but the issue you seem to overlook is that most celebrities casting are based on profit. Chris was great as Orion/Optimus but that it because he takes the character and story seriously while certain celebrities (The Rock) are just in it for money and do not give any bloody effort. They are just playing their default setting instead of actually playing the character they are cast in and that is why most people do not like most celebrities casting because most do not bother to put in the effort. Sorry if i got heated and i hope I did not come off as rude, but as a TF fan I was very worried that Chris and the cast were not going to be good. Thankfully I was wrong.
I wouldn't say I overlooked it, just didn't go into full discussion. As I mentioned in the video, are these people chosen because of their name (and therefore the money they bring to the box office)? Yes, most likely 98% of the time.
Tbh I think celebrity voice acting is okay. Yeah, there's some bad examples. But I don't think you have to red flag already something that has cva (Celebrity voice acting.
