The added fx and layering do make the vocals more powerful and upfront but the rawness of the original is integral to the band's sound (and Phil's badass-ness)

I'm not a fan of growlers but I think Anselmo perfected the growl thing with the right balance of melody, to where he was actually SINGING. Everyone who came after him just sounded like a ripoff who was trying too hard.

That is certainly as far away from the truth as possible.
People were growling in metal when Phil was 8 years old.
And long before that, people were singing with distortion in Blues.

@@gizzy2403 He sings with a lot of rasp and reminds me of Joe Cocker, who used less rasp. Death growls are lower and almost "voiceless". They are produced with the false vocal cords.

Phil was actually one hell of a singer in the early days. Cemetery Gates had some VERY impressive chops. I suppose there was only so long his vocal chords could sustain the beating he gave them. Don’t get me wrong, though, I love everything he’s ever done. He’s heavy metal royalty for damn sure.

  • @KyOte13

"to me, a lot of growl, sounds very similar"... no, Ken.. a lot of growl sounds like Phil Anselmo. He absolutely changed the game, and set the bar for all the rock vocalists that came after. No one has been able to touch his range, versatility, power and technique. You gotta understand, it was Phil who brought extreme vocal techniques to the popular arena... before him, all of it was underground. Nowadays, screaming and distortion are very common, and pretty much the NEW STANDARD for rock vocals. That is almost single handedly because of Phil's work with Pantera... none of the popular rock singers were doing it before him. Once again, he set the bar that is still in place today, and that has not been surpassed.. his technique is impeccable. When you attempt to sing his songs, you realize just how skilled the man is. he wasn't just "gnarly".. this guy can sing his fucking ass off. He is an innovator. You sound pretty condescending towards his ability here, and I implore you... I would LOVE to see YOU sing something like " Broken" or " A New LEVEL"🤷 The knowledge and experience it takes to be able to vocalize like that... takes YEARS to learn correctly, and even more to hone and perfect. You should put WAY more respect on his name. I think Phil, and this modern school of vocal, is beyond your range of knowledge...and I gotta say, you dressing up his vocal like that, is the best example of the differences between our generation, and yours... the power is in the raw product... the proof is in the growling😉🖕

Both Power metal & CFH have Halford style .
By the way by Vulgar , he still have that ability , but he dropped the vibrato and added more gritt
But some " hidden notes " ending rasp and frequencies are still , with screech high , in the same notes that the 2 previous album . As the verses of power metal .
In 1992/1993 , he still does the Power metal / CFH scream here and there when he want it .
On Psycho Holiday or Cemetary gates in Hollywood palladium 1992 , he does it ..
In a bootleg of the last show of Vulgar , he does it in cemetary gates and This love , and a bit in the art of schredding
      The osaka /tokyo 1992 too

  • @nickx1754

I think Pantera made their name as a live band and they wanted that to come across in the studio with not-to-crazy production.
However, your effects really did fatten up the vocal track and I’m glad to have that knowledge to use myself!
You talked about this vocal technique being dangerous and from what Phil could do back in the day compared to his voice now….yeah, you hit the nail on the head. I think it was worth it though. Like what you said about Layne Staley in the Man in a Box video (paraphrased) “if it immortalizes your voice on a great record, maybe it’s worth to some vocalists.”
To me, Vulgar Display of Power is THE essential metal album. Still untouchable even today.

Hi Ken, I'm so excited to hear this!!! Have you ever heard the Pantera song, shattered? He does some Rob Halford high screams. Phil has such a unique and powerful voice. Walk is an excellent song. I didn’t think Pantera could sound any better, but you did it again. I love the mix you did. Thank you Ken. RE-SPECT 👊🏼

I've gotta say, I heard the low octave isolated track and was a bit skeptical, but when you brought the instrumental track back in, it really came together. The right vocal was barely there in the overall mix compared to isolated, but the way the overall vocals sounded was crisp. It wasn't quite as raw, but there was definitely an elevation in attack. The Ken Tamplin Production Academy certainly has a nice ring to it.
I can see why this video is a little more production heavy. This song isn't super vocally dynamic compared to Cemetery Gates, which would be a fascinating song to see you break down techniques in. I'm certainly looking forward to that one. Rock on!

I prefer Phil's vocal without the beefed up effects but this is a very nice video on teaching how to achieve a big, effected rock vocal tone ( Layne Staley approach to this was stunning) so kudos and thanks for the great insight Ken.
Pantera revolutionized metal in the early 90's, pulling away from overly processed, often high pitched vocals of the late 80's to a rawer hardcore type approach and aesthetic with a serious groove, passion and incredible musicianship.
It connected with the masses to the nth degree proving Terry Date's production was sympathetic to the bands vision and by keeping it stripped back and "real" it stood out from the crowd. Regarding Phil's voice and the vocal production on the Vulgar album, I think it's perfection. It achieved what it set out to do at that time, it felt fresh, in your face, raw and new and to my ear hasn't dated in the slightest which is sometimes a pitfall of overly working not only vocal tracks but any instrumentation..
I've watched a lot of your videos Ken, I love them, full of great insights and tips. Thank you, keep up the great work.

I see what you did and it sounds bigger like you said but the reverb kills it for me. I did enjoy the video very much and I did learn some stuff and I appreciate that.

Great vid! I’d like to see you instruct on how to sing like Phil “safely” as well maestro) for what’s about the vocal treatment to me the original sounds a lot more “in your face” as the added tracks make the whole things mushy and phasy as phase cancellation happens :/

I saw Phil live a couple years ago. He had lost a lot of weight, looked pretty much like he did when he was 25, and he was singing at least as well as in '92 - '94 - even the pretty high stuff. Dude must be on some sort of amazing health kick. The only thing I noticed was him puff on an inhaler twice between songs. Other than that he was top notch.

While it definitely sounds larger with the effects you added on, the raw brutal vocals from Phil fit Pantera style so well, it's just a crude fist on your face!
Awesome analysis, BTW pls consider checking Russell Allen from Symphony X :D
