I even remember that before this episode came out there already was a skit in the internet, fanart, of this scene just using images from manga and with YouSeeBigGirl bgm. I was at some point ahead in the manga just not completely caught up so I didn't mind the spoiler but it was cool.

Very reminiscent to Game of Thrones. Gray characters. Love it.
I find it so ironic when Falco said to Eren "You tricked me, and here i respected you..."
That is exactly how Eren felt back when Reiner and Bertholdt betrayed them.

Arguably the best episode of the series while having no action sequence in the entire episode.
Truly a masterpiece.

Fastest Uno reverse card in history
The parallels in episode 5 are out of this world. We saw Eren's face light up and change when Willy mentioned that he doesn't want to die "because i was born into this world". Those are the exact same words Carla told Keith Shadis when he asked what was special about Eren back in Season 3. The parallel of it now being Reiner begging for mercy and not being able to do anything, while Eren finds himself in the same position that Reiner found himself in back in s1. As Eren said himself "i keep moving forwards until i destroy my enemies". He has no other choice but fight for Paradis's freedom and most importantly his own freedom.
It’s literally my favourite part of this episode when Eren heard Willy saying „because I was born into this world“ and he immediately blinks bc it’s literally his character based phrase
There's a lot of ways to interpret it too. Most people think that eren's eyes reacted in that way because he's heard/experienced those words before, but another way to look at it is eren reacted that way because he's seen the future. He knows willy says that and when it's confirmed he reacts that way. I mean throughout the entire show, eren slowly comes to accept his fate by reaffirming occurences. For example, when sasha died, he asked what she said, and connie confirmed she said "meat." Another PRIME example is when Mikasa says they're family instead of admitting her love for him, that was his breaking point. While the first option could be right (eren just solely reacting to those words because he's heard them before) there's other ways to look at it. The more I've watched this show (especially the new Season 4 part 3 ep) I've realized that eren is a slave to his own fate, throughout the show he's begging and looking for another path, but everything just confirms that this was the only way
@Evan Bell Eren doesn't see everything, zeke confirmed that, so idk if he heard those words before. I've heard other ppl say, and I agree, that Eren was thinking maybe the future was changing and willy could understand him, but the declaration of war was the last time Eren believe that was possible.
That conversation between Reiner and Eren and the declaration of war happening simultaneously is probably one of my favourite scene from this episode, even more so than the end epic transformation.
@@kartikeytyagi2330 As i said "most importantly his own freedom". And i didn't want to say it because it's a spoiler but he is fighting for his friends aswell. We literally learn that in a few episodes from this one now

There is a reason why people likes to call him attack Titan more than founding Titan

@Loz We all know that. Reverse card is just a funny joke.
Also Eren didn't "take the bait" he just did what he was always planning to do. They both won this round as you said. but ultimately Willy underestimated Eren and Paradis which led to where we are now. It was for the most part a silly plan in retrospect

This episode was what made me realize that this is genuinely the BEST show I’ve EVER watched. Everything about it was just so on point, every word, every action, the meaning it has, it’s perfect. What I’d do to watch this episode for the first time again
In my opinion. there is nothing that can come close to this story and there never will be
The fact that Eren reaches out for Reiner is so subtly beautiful in my opinion. As Eren mentioned, he sees himself the same as Reiner. He could've just transformed right there when Reiner was on his knees. But he helped him get up. Because now he knows what Reiner felt while killing all those people. As these videos are recorded ahead of time so there's no spoiler issue anymore. Eren has already seen and felt himself massacring the world. He knows how agonising it is even before committing the act. That's why he can relate to Reiner. Though it won't feel like that to Reiner, but Eren still thinks of Reiner in the same way. The older brother figure. That's why he chatted with him for so long before attacking. He kind of misses their friendship deep down. Only those two can understand one another. The sin of commiting genocide against their wishes. Eren helping Reiner up after that chat is letting Reiner know that he isn't alone and someone is there for him. But at the end of the day, both have different goals and the must fight. Like Bertholdt said, "you are my precious comrades. I also intend to kill you."
I interpreted that scene a slightly differently, at this point eren knows he is going to destroy the place , kill a lot of people, innocent or otherwise, it's his first act of violence against people who he knows are innocent. So he is not only showing empathy to Reiner, he is trying to justify to himself what he is about to do, He wanted Reiner to tell him they had no other choice, he was practically pushing him to say it, so that he can justify that he doesn't have any choice either. Eren looks shocked when Riener tells him that there was a way, they could have turned back after Marcel was eaten.
@@satyanarayanbera7659 Except he wasn't really shocked. He's experienced that exact moment God knows how many times
@@satyanarayanbera7659 "eren knows hes going to" dude. he can literally just go home and not do any of it lol.
"I feel like Eren's the bad guy"
"NO!"
AOT debates in a nutshell 😂
Another detail to point out: that whole stage play was set inside the internment zone which means the building that Eren just decimated was full of Eldian families
About the discussion at the end, in my opinion, them stating they wouldn't start the rumbling would have no affect whatsoever. Everyone learned about the rumbling in this episode, so then, why were the Eldians treated like trash before? Why are they called devils? How would they even prove they wouldn't unleash the rumbling? It was just one of the many excuses the outside world hides behind to hate on the Eldians and make their lives hell. They are afraid of what they can't understand and can't even comprehend that THEY are the ones turning these poor people into titans. Who the heck thinks Eldians would want to turn into pure titans or turn their own people into them? Paradis here is fighting to survive, because they have no other choice, because the world has already made up its mind, because nothing they could say would change their approach, and because they declared war first with a representative from everywhere around the world. And Eren feels he has no choice but destruction, that it's either Paradis or the rest of the world, because he has not been able to see one glimpse of hope for their future all those years. And it hurts me.😭😭
What people learned was that the rumbling threat was a lie but they did know about it. For a hundred years the world had to live in the fear that at any moment thousands of colossal titans could be unleashed to flatten the world. In our world even the super closed off and dangerous country that is North Korea make you feel like it can be reasoned with because they keep contact with the rest of the civilisation.
Paradis was completely closed off, of course people would start to feel paranoid when the last message for a 100 years from a super dangerous nation is a threat. Add to that the previous 1800 years of atrocities from them and the 100 years from Marley and it's completely understandable.
No matter how nice you are towards Eldians, no matter how much you or they themselves think of them as friends and allies, you only need the whims of a single king to have them transform into giant man-eating monsters.
The fact this episode isnt a reaction to 5 and 6 is the real evil LMAO
2:23 McKay and Brig's "oh it's happening" "here it comes" face...
11:07 Hypocrisy of Willy Tybur "But I do not wish to die. And that is because I was born into this world".
Eren always believed that Freedom is everyone's birth right and now Marley just wants to wipe out Paradis and take away their right to even live. Marley and the Tybur family just without any question deemed people of Paradis as evil and believed that they should be wiped out before they get chance to get the power to defeat others. That is why Eren's eyes widened in this scene.
Marley talks about saving the world but in reality they just want to steal the power of founding titan and ice burst stone resources. Marley wanted to maintain their absolute power throughout the globe. After when the technology had advanced enough, Marley would commit their own genocide over the Eldians enslaved in Marley as they would have lost their use.
exactly, I was so angry with the Tybur family

@@baekhyunbuttersmyeggrolls8273 yeah, but still, it's tragic.
I think it's better this way, personally.
Will never get over just how beautiful the writing is. That conversation between Reiner and Eren is one of my favourite scenes ever. It is so well done. Eren realising he and Reiner are the same, but have to do what he has to. Nothing was going to stop him from that. Even the most recent episode we see what lead him to this. It's all just so epic 😩
I love the fact that Willy's final word "War" is timed with Eren's titan roar, so epic.
The fact that the whole Twitter and world was in Chaos when this ep came out and #declarationofwar was on trend 😂
So really pay attention to Tybur's speech. It's not just the fact that Eren is unpredictable. They need a scapegoat they need an enemy for the world to hate. He's using the island devils and Eren as a misdirect so people will forget that he just told them that the Tyburs and Marley have lied to them this whole time. This whole time they thought the Tyburs and Marley banned together to chase King Fritz and his followers to the island when it was really King Fritz who wanted peace and came up with this plan for Marley and the Tyburs with the false hero Helos. Right after he revealed that people in the audience started questioning whether or not the people on the island are devils, meaning if he had just taken accountability for it all there could be a peaceful talk but instead he chose to pretend to take accountability while gaining sympathy because they have been fighting against a lunatic named Eren who is unpredictable and stole the female titan and colossal from them and wants to stomp the world out. He did a political switcharoo. Yeah i lied to you BUT there are actual BAD GUYS over there so it's not like we're completely wrong for trying to fight them.
Total political switcheroo indeed. It's the pivot from "We didn't do that" to "We did that cause the alternative was worse." If any conspiracy about JFK or 9-11 etc. ever turns out to be true, it's exactly how the CIA will respond.
Yhea I hate the Tyburs more than anyone in the story
This episode is so wild, that when anime randomly came up at work the one time, my general manager and I both got hyped over just the memory of the episode. He went from a boss to feeling like one of the boys. This show does wild shit like that.

This episode is fantastic. The penny dropping for Reiner and Falco, the tension that builds to an inevitable conclusion. The declaration of war.
The hype at the end of this episode is like the best one in the whole show. It give me goosebumps after watching it twice before.
Something I noticed, when Reiner says 'kill me', Eren replies "we are the same" That has a whole different meaning now, after we see S4 part 3 part 1, doesn't it?
For real though. Eren out here really pulling a Lelouch :(

Seeing this episode and the exchange between Eren and Reiner, makes the little speech Bertholdt made before that epic final transformation with Appleseed playing in the background, even more meaningful.
“That’s right. Nobody’s in the wrong. There was just nothing we could do. Because this world… *is just that cruel* . “
God I love this show so much.
Season 4 has to be one of the best seasons of anime. The story, the animation, and the music. The soundtrack in this show is just on another level.

The things studio gek is about to see is going to be my favorite reactions again probably. (I know they already up to date)
These next few videos 👀🍿
It's hilarious... from rewatching this, I just realized. AoT and GoT have so many parallels, but AoT just really succeeds by really following the narrative. Eren going mad and burning the world down is pretty much exactly Daenerys' Mad Queen path, but literally the whole show is about this one moment where Eren is so ready to forgive, but everything that's happened to him and that's happening politically won't let him. He only has one real choice, kill them all. He can't give up, he can't just lay down and die so everyone continues to be oppressed or used as a war tool.
Absolutely! Danearys' path to madness felt rushed, and it ruined her character for me. Though there were subtle hints coming to it, the execution transitioning her to madness was done in such a way her actions felt unjustified. I absolutely hated the last season as a result and ruined one of the best characters in fiction for me. Eren's decision felt so justified you just can't help feeling tempted to support his actions even though through a wide scope, it is a terrible action. The tragic path of Eren was set up and executed so perfectly, that we cannot fathom with the thought of disliking Eren though his actions are so despicable. He is the perfect embodiment of love and hate at the same time. All his actions are justified for the love and hope for his people yet the hate and dolm for the world for persecuting and taking away the freedom of his people.
even though we only had few marley-centric episodes, it's enough to be able to empathize with its people especially the eldians trapped in liberio. because imagine if we went straight to eren attacking them in s4 without knowing what we know now, we'd just be blindly cheering him on because we would see this as revenge for what they all went through in paradis.

Another interesting detail I just realized about this episode that helps to foster debate and confusion: Eren begins his transformation BEFORE the declaration of war, but it's timed such that he actually completes the transformation and starts his attack AFTER the declaration of war. Therefore, anyone watching can debate whether Eren did or did not properly wait for a formal declaration of war before launching a pre-emptive counterattack. Eren is surely taking the initiative here, but whether or not he is justified according to international politics is riiiiiight on the border of what's permissible.
There is a reason why eren waited for tybur to finish his line “Declare War on paradise with the world forces” he told and signified that the ones starting this war were the world and the marley while Eren is just fighting back from Paradise’s side which is a helpless undeveloped nation .

That’s literally insane!
The next 2 episodes are arguably my favorite of the entire series. It's like watching a football game lol
From the first chapter they show you how traumatized Eren is by the death of his mother, and this is seen until the end, and that trauma turns into an even greater hatred for all the friends he is losing over time in front of him. from his eyes helplessly. Then finding out that those titans are actually people forced to become those monsters by people outside the island is another reason to hate them even more. Unfortunately, the humans never wanted to reach an agreement, they simply decided to eliminate them all, something that Eren again cannot let go. You can't let them rule over your life again, that once again take away your options, your freedom. I get it, unfortunately his friends don't..
Pretty savage how Eren waited until the official declaration before transforming, as if to say, “You asked for this now. We are officially enemies. And I keep moving forward, to destroy my enemies.”
OMG I will never forget THE RAGE that was going on in Twitter. Everyone was going feral tweeting #declarationofwar that other people thought WW3 started and started asking who Eren was HAHAHAHHAA
Watching these reactions every morning before work, perfect timing for the upload. Cant wait to see your guys reaction season 4 pt 3.
"Im the same as you" is so cool because the whole convo eren is trying to bait Reiner to admit why he destroyed the wall, at first he says to save the world, but after some pushing he admits its because he wanted respect and to be a hero, now Eren says as he though he's the same as Reiner because Eren isn't doing the rumbling to save everyone on the island, its cuz he was disappointed in the outside world and wanted it to be like armins book, that's what was revealed in newest ep, at least that's what I take from it...

Watching their anticipation build has been so satisfying to see 😭
I think the cruel thing is, you always have a choice. You just won't like the alternative.
Some smart people like Hange or Armin can think of other coices, but Eren can only sees defeat and advance.
That's true 😤👌
Only yeagerists and opressive marleyans would think there is no choice, moreover people say reiner is worse than eren, but Reiner did it when he was just 12 years old, while eren is doing this when is is full adult.
@@Scribbly_Chi_10 Not really, no. There is absolutely no choice when 99% of the world wants to exterminate you simply for existing. You didn't do anything evil, you didn't do anything to hurt them, the mere fact that you breathe is an offense to them. They aren't willing to listen to reason, and we're shown that time and time again. Despite living with them and seeing that they're just normal people, the Warriors still decided to try and exterminate them, and they definitely made that decision when they were old enough to know better.
It always astounds me how so many people argue for the rest of the world when they're literally just the Nazi analogy here.
@@NovusIgnis that goes for eldians being the people who can literally transform into titans too, anyone would fear such people, if not hate, it's human to be fearful, ofcourse racism is also there, but that racism kind of stems of factual historical data, so I don't blame them much, although i do hate those marleyan bastards who fed grisha's sister to dogs, that is just pure hatred, otherwise fear of titans kind of makes sense, honestly, although it is messed up, but zeke's plan was kind of more practical.
@@Scribbly_Chi_10 It really isn't. They have enough knowledge of titans that they are aware that the founding Titan can control everything, and they know that the founding Titan isn't within the royal family anymore. There isn't anything they could do to fix the problem of the initial attack, but Marley had the ability to propose a truce revolved around using the founding titan to free all Eldians from their ability to turn into titans, thus making everyone equal. I came up with that plan in two seconds. It wouldn't have taken Marley very long to think about it, but they dismissed any notion of that in favor of exterminating them.
Dont forget, they weren't in favor of the euthanization plan, they just wanted to exterminate the Paradisans. There's a reason why Zeke didn't bring that option up to the military: he knew they weren't going to go for it. They wanted violent extermination to get rid of them and use their island for resources, not to let their people slowly die out in peace. Zeke was a rebel against Marley too.
This episode of AoT has so many parallels with the GoT episode Winds of Winter. Despite being one of the few good GoT episodes after S4, AoT pulls it off even better and in 1/3 of the runtime.
Eren’s ‘entrance’ to Marley is built up with the same level of tension and intrigue in GoT that culminated in Cersei blowing up the Sept of Baelor and those due to sentence her. While being one of the first times we question Eren’s moral compass for the killing of innocents, the sequence of events that unfold to reveal the malevolent scheme at hand have such a righteous tone to them that feels so much more impactful than Cersei’s vengeful retribution arc.
By the end of GoT we learn Cersei will burn a lot of things to the ground, Jon Snow has a queen and knows nothing (like some weird allegory on the life of a worker ant), and some punk kid’s story of succumbing to paralysis later combined with psychic abilities is apparently peak compelling storytelling (while somehow weirdly also being completely derivative of Professor X or Mr Glass in Unbreakable). AoT engaged with similar plot devices, but as an anime was yet so much more relatable, on what it had to say about things like inter-generational trauma, ethnic persecution and history’s cyclical nature.
Can I just say that as reactors, you guys are so great! You don't pause mid episode (or very rarely do) which ruins the pacing, you are so into it that you can remember your thoughts at end, you keep genuine reactions during the episode and speculation and discussion strictly after. It makes watching with you guys such a treat!
Genuinely looking forward to seeing your reactions to the rest of this season!
Get your ODM gear ready! There is more action thriller coming up. But seriously the suspense was at its climax. An Absolutely legendary Anime 💯

Attack on Titan isn't a perfectly written story (nor does it have to be; a work of art is only as perfect as its creator), but it's still easily one of my favorite stories of all-time. The sheer and raw emotional impact it delivers... My jaw is constantly dropping. I will FOREVER geek over this fucking anime man
Yooo what up, makes my mornings so fun. Thx for uploading
Yessir!! Thank you for this comment
The tension is THICC! Masterfully done episode.🙏
I love their reactions to everything its always so funny
Ikr
this episod one of my favorit. pumping up the scene and Eren's last words before becoming a titan - it kills me.
and the voiceover of this moment in my native language has been stuck in my head for a very long time
It's too late now because you're so far ahead but people often fail to note that while Marleyan's are present at this event including their top military leaders as well as other prominent people from nations across the world this entire thing is actually taking place inside the Liberio Internment Zone so it is primarily Eldians in the surrounding area including everyone in that building that Eren just destroyed.
Whoa I'm early 😍
I feel like Carter's the lead vocalist in a boyband with his outfit standing out among the boys. 🥰
The end morality arguments are only gonna get so much better haha
👀🍿
LMAOOOOOOOO that sudden realization that the episode was about to end was so hilarious XD also btw the best cut ive seen of this was a clip where they made eren smile and it was actually a hilarious thumbnail
I was sooooo hyped when this episode came out!! 🤣 Before watching it, i have to rewatch from the beginning just to refresh all heartache and badass moments.
Not to sound weird, but I see myself in Cannon so much. His love for Erwin, his opinion on Eren's actions - dude, same 🤧👏
LEGGO
Tybur declared war on Paradis Island and Eren answered immediately😂
That's what it's about: Not having villains or heroes. Everyone is fighting for their prospects. That's why this show is so good, it's so realistic like in our world. Everyone is fighting for their own point of view
'We declare war!'
"ACCEPTED RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR"
I feel the exact same way you guys feel and I’ve already seen it more than I can count! Lmao best anime ever
this episode combined with the next one was one of my favorite parts of the show
As always thank you for this rection! The coolest content in reaction segment!
Fastest response to a declaration of war I've ever seen.
Eren had the "Auto accept" mode on
next episode will be bananas
The 2nd dude on the left side has 200 IQ.
Good shit.
Also for some reason every single "reactor" always bias and forgets about Eldians genociding basically everyone for hundreds or years and their "sentance" on this island is pretty justified, as well as the attidute towards them.
P.S. I know that they finished s4 already.
❤❤❤
Why else would his own friends turn against him
I have been waiting so long to watch your reaction to this :D Since the MMA scene with eren and reiner! Haha, epic scene
I could watch an entire 4 hour movie of just Eren and Reiner having a talk in a single room❤️
Make sure the next upload's a triple feature guys.........it has to be.
Every single person on the earth minus 4% of the people who aren't racist/Marley want ALL Eldians dead, not just Eren and not just the Island.
Look at it from the Marley perspective, legit there is a race that turns into monsters. Eldia, under Ymir DID wipe out armies and then like after Ymir there was the Fall of Lago (I think pronounced Rago Japanese don't have L's) was a large city located in Marley. It fell over 1200 years ago over the course of a single day. This is one of the end credits scenes and if you follow the story it shows...
Lago was attacked from the sea by Eldians, and eventually the port was taken, and then the citizens were next as the mindless titans destroyed its all... and the people who had managed to escape the attack, all in the line... where then chased by mindless titans who were buried, and when the sun rose...
So that wasn't Ymir, that was Eldian descendants, they were exactly like Marley. At that time, Marley had the right to hate Eldians.
The Titan War happen and.. in my opinion, all it takes is for an Eldian to love a Marley, and feel bad for their race, to then switch sides. Once love is introduced killing an oppressive father or your friends you've known all your life, but they are racist now... suddenly seems like you'd do anything for that person.
Naturally, generational hate is stupid, and unjustified... but The Eldians on the island didn't even know they could become monsters.... a perfect slate to begin a new and instead... the world wants to just "be safe" and kill every last one...
Even if they just killed the islanders.. an "honorary Marley" can still be randomly born with the power of the 9 titans, including the founder, in a royal blood(reminder no one but Zeke and Eren know about the royal blood thing) so suddenly a son is born into this world by another dad who tries to start a rebellion for his still oppressed race with the colossal titan...
Racial cleansing or indiscriminate genocide? the show is fairly deliberate that if Eren does nothing he is electing to have his friends killed. Going with Zeke means he's taking freedom from Mikasa to have a family, since he'll be dead in 4 years on top of that, military advances that make ODM gear look suicidal will be used to wipe out all Eldians, and then probably a couple gas shows for the ones on the main land..
F*ck the world, again like only 1 GOVERNMENT doesn't hate the Eldians, who's to say how many of them are still racist citizens. The 4% innocent people of the world are probably about the same amount of people who live on the island...
I'm gonna wait it out until I see all your reactions then what the part 3 special. This season is absolutely nuts
I'm in "Eren is the bad guy" camp so I was happy to see one of the bois immediately come to that conclusion too lol
Notice how everyone's leaning in this episode? Lmaoo this episode is tense as hell
arwin is with aragon living happily thanku v much
😂😂😂
