What I hate the most in this episode is the English translation at 04:49. When Bertholdt said 'nani o itte lun da, Reiner?' didn't actually mean 'why are you telling him, Reiner? ' but 'what are you saying, Reiner?' instead. That line has a lot of weight because at that very moment Bertholdt was still trying to cover up their identity and that line kinda throws off the audiences that there is a chance that Reiner is crazy and said something like that out of stress, where the English translation kinda just killed the suspense and giving away their identity prematurely.... I know their identities get revealed regardless later in the episode but I always found it weird and unfitting when I see that translation.
Thanks for this comment. The correct translation also makes more sense. By Bertholdt saying "why are you telling him?" he was also giving it away not only to the audience but to Eren, so a terrible way of covering it up. It didn't bother me as much once I realized Eren already knew, but now that you mention it, it did negate any possibility that this was due to stress, because I didn't believe that for one second.
Those were actually my thoughts when I first watched this episode! I was 100% sure that Reiner was having PTSD, and so I gave very little thought to him being a "traitor". Made it all the more painful when his arm was steaming.
Rewatching S1E3 makes the betrayal all the more painful. Reiner and Bertholdt were the first trainees Eren and Armin befriended. They bonded over the loss of their homes and shared their motivations. To think that most of it was all a lie. Also rewatching the episodes to this point and noticing Reiner/Bertholdt/Annie’s reactions to everything has been interesting. e.g. the way the camera pans to them during certain revelations/conversations, seemingly unimportant interactions they have with each other.
*spoilers for cannon and carter* Was most of it a lie tho? Loss of a home is the same for all of them. Reiner in ‘his state’ was sort of lying without meaning to. And if you look closely at bertolt during that convo, he seems genuinely empathic and interested to hear their story. As you see in the flashback in season 4, bertolt was struggling with guilt much more consciously.
I mean, even without all of that, realizing that your friends are the culprits of your mother's death and your life falling apart must be one way to snap your mind.
Also, Reiner/Bertholdt/Annie are the 3 best cadets after Mikasa. And to my understanding, there is quite a gap between the 4th (Annie) and the 5th (Eren). They are hinted at as remarkable, but you kinda dismiss it when you're told the information in Ep (I think) 3.
Honestly, you can probably argue that they may have realized Eren could possibly be a Titan. Shortly after he gets hurt, he's sitting there, just eating his food, while his body is literally steaming. I wouldn't be super surprised if that stuff tipped them off a little towards Eren.
They were already informed that Reiner and Bertholdt were suspicious and that they needed to react calm and not raise any suspicion, hence why Mikasa was already ready to protect Eren
@@twiddlerat9920 Later in the anime Mikasa laments about how she could've killed them both but didn't manage to because at that point they were still her friends and that made her hesitate. So she was going for the kill, just couldn't bring herself to do it

Add in the feeling of being so STUPID to not see the resemblance, at least with Reiner and his Titan while KNOWING how Annie looks like her titan and Eren looks pretty close even though it's a little different with the hair. Betrayal, dumbfounded, betrayal, anger, and betrayal made this episode so good.

4:45 McKay looking at the camera like he's in the episode of The Office . Stay strong the 3 of you until Cannon and Carter catch up to season 4 part 2 lol
I cried so hard during this episode because I loved Reiner and even though I didn't now Bertholdt, I liked their duo. But what was really making me breakdown was because they were the cause of this whole story. They were the reason eren's mom died, and why we don't know where eren's dad is. When Eren shouted "You damn traitors" got me so hype but still bawling because he loved them as brothers but they were the reason of all these lives that have been lost.
This reveal is genius level writing. Isayama took into account that after seeing Annie in her titan form, you can predict who the armored is purely from looks and the colossal from association with the armored. So what better way to make the reveal extremely awkward and out of left field for people who knew? Completely catches everyone off guard, even for people who were somewhat spoiled like me. There were also a few clues sprinkled in the first season. Whenever you see shots of the cadets, those three are always standing together.
This is one of the craziest plot twists in all of fiction. The scene at the end when Reiner and Berthold transformed with that amazing music playing was one of the most epic things I’ve ever seen. Definitely the best episode up until this point.
I personally think this is the greatest revelation in all anime. It was so casual and out of the blue that you still question if Reiner and Bertholt were telling the truth or just tripping until the epic arm reveal and transformations then your jaw just drops. So fucking good. Love the reaction boys, just subscribed.
This is one of my favorite episodes. They really went above and beyond with the reveal. You can definitely tell how the emotions are in the episodes as well
"Went above and beyond with the reveal." Literally Reiner: "Yo, im the armored and whoever the hell that dude is, is the colossal." Yup, totally above and beyond.
Man, I swear, AOT was made for us to watch it several times We don't catch so many details on the first time Berthold, Reiner and Annie's background had sooooo many clues All the side glances, the misplaced/weird reaction upon hearing some news, Berthold almost biting his hand on the tower Everything was right in front of our eyes
Agree, I watched it 4 times and everytime by a different prespective, understanding more about the show. Every time I rewatch It I apprecciate it more.
The ep, that scene, never gets old. I love how the reveal is so casual, not even fully focused on them at first. And the transformations are some of the best here. Eren’s continues to just be the move exciting thing ever. Your reactions were great, it’s certainly one of the most jaw dropping, surprising reveals in history.
I've watched a lot of reactions to this episode. It seems like half of people thought the subtitles were mistranslated and the other half thought the two were just joking. Like even after saying they're titans no one believed it. Including me 😆
I went from not trusting the subtitle to thinking they are joking to thinking they have PTSD but then when Reiner heals his wound, I was like "Oh so this is fucking true"
@@jennyjenjira4572 I thought they were just testing him. I thought they wanted to see if he was on the humans side or the Titans side. I was like, oh he's gonna pass the test. Then it was like, noooooooo!! They were for real!!!
I wish I had the opportunity to have a genuine reaction to the reveal, but it was basically spoiled for me before season 2 came out. A friend of mine shared their “theory” that they were the armored and colossal titans right after I finished the first season😬 so it was always in the back of my mind every time I saw them leading up to the reveal… will always be bitter that I was robbed of the chance to experience the betrayal lol
Beyond people hyping the episode, the situation itself was so tense you could cut it with a knife. I'm pretty sure Lupa of the Roshi squad said it was like everyone had a hand on their gun waiting for it to jump off
A whole month and 20+ episodes later could have NEVER prepared me for your reactions!! This was the first of MANY highly anticipated episodes and I can’t wait to watch them all with you guys.
Daaang what they be doing? 😭 Everything feels alright here to me. Two in the middle reactions always seem genuine. The other guys never ruin it or anything. Give there opinions and be excited to watch like we all were.
One thing that really struck me watching this episode the second time around was the look of pain/hurt in Bertolt's face when Mikasa attacks him and Reiner. Even though Bertolt does what he does, I appreciate that you can sense that there *are* mixed feelings going on, and despite him understanding what he needs to do, that doesn't still make it surprising to him/hurt that the scouts (or at least Mikasa) would be so quick to react.
I love that when season 1 came out this plot twist hadn't been revealed in the manga yet, so when casting voice actors they picked someone fairly new and unknown for Bertholdt assuming he would be just a small background character. Boy were they wrong, lol. He does a great job. Ymir also hadn't even been named yet in season 1, she's listed as 'Freckles' til season 2. Considering Ilse's Notebook was released in the middle of season 1, I think keeping Ymir's name a secret until much later was a nice little way to give us a 'hey wait a minute' moment along with Hange in season 2 recognizing the name.
Really? They picked a background character for bertholdt? 😂😂 I’ve rewatched the show so many times, but I’m still finding new gems of information like this. That’s amazing! 😂😂 I guess he had a lucky chance to earn the spotlight!
This was literally my reaction as well. This episode is such a masterpiece. How Reiner casually dropped the biggest bomb yet so far and Eren tried to ignore it and gave them a chance to take their words back. And the music here hits so hard.
i love how mckay often make an eye contact with the camera whenever something crazy about to happen lol. it's like him telling "they are not gonna believe this" to us
This, THIS right here is what every single viewer was waiting for since episode one. In my opinion one of the best or the best reveals I've ever seen in anything - anime or not.
Small detail in yesterday's episode: at 6.02, when Ymir reaches the top of the tower while it's collapsing to tell the others to grab her hair, there is a shot with Bertholdt, Reiner and Historia; Bertholdt is about to bite his hand to transform himself
This is one of the greatest scenes in the show, but also one of the saddest 😔 You can actually see how crushed both parties are by the reveal... Reiner and Bertholdt acted like older brother figures to Eren, Armin, Connie, Sasha, Jean, etc., and they really cared about them, in their own way 🤧 Their betrayal is heartbreaking in every sense 💔
God I love your reactions! "I feel betrayed" is how we all felt in that moment. Sometimes I wish I could wipe my memory or go back in time and watch this series again without knowing all the twists and turns just to relive these intense reveals again.

Annie, Reiner and Bert could have gone home with trophy Eren.
@@Waterbug1591 I think that with all the scouts reunited, they couldn’t show themselves, and Reiner was doubting his actions that time, Bertholdt always follows Reiner, so if he didn’t act, he wouldn’t either
@@Waterbug1591 SPOILERS CARE They can't know which Titan Eren currently holds. So if they all reveal themselves and Eren doesn't have the founding then they have no trump card left. Sending just Annie means even if she gets captured they still have 2 spies in order to identify and get the founding or some other titan
@@Waterbug1591 Quite a gamble. If you think that Annie can do it then why would you riskexpowing both other agents when you don't know if Eren is even there. Even with Armin's assurance you can't risk exposing yourselves in titan territory, with limited supplies and a lot of people with ODM.
Love this episode for so many reasons. The balls to subvert expectations like that and make the "big bombastic reveal" work in a covert and quiet manner. Providing the viewer the context as to why Eren's not just exploding at those news and making us understand why that falling pennant thing is much more impactful than it should be. Everyone is literally stopping and on edge, because they know that one wrong move means the entire bit of wall they're on could be destroyed. Eren following a clear script and then going off a bit, with that "what bastard would reveal that plan" thing. You can literally feel how the real Eren comes out behind the "be calm" facade he had to put on. And of course some of the best transformation moments in the whole show. The music, the sound effects, the impact and later Eren's rage-fueled transformation with some smooth af animation. Instant classic.
Bro everything aside, that look on Eren's face when the thunder surrounds Reiner and Berthold (forgive me if I spelled it wrong lol). It always feels so full of emotion. Like he just snapped into his own world, thinking about every time he trusted someone. And it has always been left broken. It was worse than knowing Annie's truth. It was worse because the guys who were partly the reason for his mother's death, they were right in front of him. And they were in front of him all along. It was worse also because he didn't know Annie personally and he was still not ready to accept that she's a traitor. But with Reiner and Berthold, he just got robbed of his trust like never before. This was a turning point for Eren, to learn that nobody is worthy of being trusted in his world. Nobody is an open shell. This is where Eren started to change, imo. The way he transformed here was the first time he didn't have any second thoughts and doubts. He just knew he had to choose slaughter over wisdom and compassion. I might be digging too far but that's what AoT is to me. It's just so full of emotion and perceptions. Even the characters faces reveal what they're going through. An amazing story executed and presented flawlessly. AoT is for life.🔥

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Also the English dub makes the traitors line way more iconic
日本語は難しいですよね。😣
Those were actually my thoughts when I first watched this episode! I was 100% sure that Reiner was having PTSD, and so I gave very little thought to him being a "traitor". Made it all the more painful when his arm was steaming.
I was laughing so hard at their reaction to Reiner casually revealing the truth. I almost choked.
yo.

*spoilers for cannon and carter*
Was most of it a lie tho?
Eren: "The titans made us lose our homes."
Reiner: "Yeah, we sure did."
Eren: "What, lost your homes?"
Reiner: ".....Yes."
Honestly, you can probably argue that they may have realized Eren could possibly be a Titan. Shortly after he gets hurt, he's sitting there, just eating his food, while his body is literally steaming.
I wouldn't be super surprised if that stuff tipped them off a little towards Eren.
The fact that Mikasa reacted at the drop of a dime whilst everyone was still processing what's happening just goes to show how elite she is.
They were already informed that Reiner and Bertholdt were suspicious and that they needed to react calm and not raise any suspicion, hence why Mikasa was already ready to protect Eren
Her insticts were fast but not her brain. What the hell did she think slashing a titan shifter would accomplish
@twiddlerat9920 they cant transform if severely injured or yk she could kill them.

yeah. I see a lot of reaction video and they're all have the same reaction (stunned) when that screen happened.

No special meaning. Its a trick to build tension.
12:02 “ I feel like I got betrayed” was literally exactly how everyone was feeling when this ep dropped lmao. And the dumbfounded look you guys had on your faces when Reiner just casually told Eren who they were was priceless. 😂 best reaction so far. I’ve been watching with you guys everyday and it’s so refreshing how good this show still is.
"I feel like I GOT BETRAYED!!"

Haha good one. I could not rewatch with new people. I would get too giddy and be smiling ear to ear and spoil something on accident.
haha I loved that, its like he was asking us WTF is happening
I cried so hard during this episode because I loved Reiner and even though I didn't now Bertholdt, I liked their duo. But what was really making me breakdown was because they were the cause of this whole story. They were the reason eren's mom died, and why we don't know where eren's dad is. When Eren shouted "You damn traitors" got me so hype but still bawling because he loved them as brothers but they were the reason of all these lives that have been lost.
Reiner was a homie and then he does this bitch ass shit 💀 I felt so betrayed man.

I predicted reiner as armor titan because of the resemblance aand also annie. But bertoldth never knew that coming. It was all in front of out eyes
True. Tbh I already knew the armored from even Season 1, but that reveal was definitely fun.
Never suspected them to have been titans so imagine my surprise 😂
This is one of the craziest plot twists in all of fiction. The scene at the end when Reiner and Berthold transformed with that amazing music playing was one of the most epic things I’ve ever seen. Definitely the best episode up until this point.
I personally think this is the greatest revelation in all anime. It was so casual and out of the blue that you still question if Reiner and Bertholt were telling the truth or just tripping until the epic arm reveal and transformations then your jaw just drops. So fucking good. Love the reaction boys, just subscribed.
It was definetely the most epic one. But the best one is yet to come.. I think everybody knows what I am talking about.
The arm steaming with the dialogue and the soundtrack going off... so good 😫

This is one of my favorite episodes. They really went above and beyond with the reveal. You can definitely tell how the emotions are in the episodes as well

@Bárbara Gajardo yeah you can see in Bert's eyes that it affected him alot. But over all its a great plot twist carried out perfectly

Yup, totally above and beyond.
Man, I swear, AOT was made for us to watch it several times
We don't catch so many details on the first time
Berthold, Reiner and Annie's background had sooooo many clues
All the side glances, the misplaced/weird reaction upon hearing some news, Berthold almost biting his hand on the tower
Everything was right in front of our eyes
I just recently caught them in one shot as part of the refugees after Wall Maria had fallen in episode 2 of season 1!

I'm suprised that Cannon noticed so fast that something was off, most people don't notice that fast because of how casual the conversation is 😂
I think they were all antsy waiting for something weird to happen since the episode was hyped up so much
Beyond people hyping the episode, the situation itself was so tense you could cut it with a knife. I'm pretty sure Lupa of the Roshi squad said it was like everyone had a hand on their gun waiting for it to jump off

I wish I could wipe my memory and watch this again. This episode made me realize how insane this show is.
This episode always makes me breathing heavy and my heart pound... and when they finally say the reveal, it's just pure relief.
This episode never ceases to blow people's minds. I never get tired of seeing people's minds being blown.
i love how mckay often make an eye contact with the camera whenever something crazy about to happen lol. it's like him telling "they are not gonna believe this" to us
This, THIS right here is what every single viewer was waiting for since episode one. In my opinion one of the best or the best reveals I've ever seen in anything - anime or not.
I envy them for seeing this for the first time
Enjoy it boys 🙂
True!!!
Small detail in yesterday's episode: at 6.02, when Ymir reaches the top of the tower while it's collapsing to tell the others to grab her hair, there is a shot with Bertholdt, Reiner and Historia; Bertholdt is about to bite his hand to transform himself
McKay constantly smiling at brig had me crying of laughter 😂

You mean season 4, part 3, part 1 as the final part of Aot is going to be split into two parts lol.
@Suraj did not know that lol, ill wait for it tho
This is one of the greatest scenes in the show, but also one of the saddest 😔 You can actually see how crushed both parties are by the reveal... Reiner and Bertholdt acted like older brother figures to Eren, Armin, Connie, Sasha, Jean, etc., and they really cared about them, in their own way 🤧 Their betrayal is heartbreaking in every sense 💔

The energy, bonding and banter after the episode is absolute proof of what masterful story-telling Attack on Titan is.
We’re seeing peak plot twist here, my guys are so lucky to live in times that AoT is produced. Love your reacts!
There's a really HUGE plot hole/flaw with AOT, why didn't Reiner and Bertholdt appear when Annie was pursuing Eren, it would have made their job a whole lot easier considering that there's no way the scout could even scratch the Armored Titan one minor bit.
@@Waterbug1591 SPOILERS CARE
They can't know which Titan Eren currently holds. So if they all reveal themselves and Eren doesn't have the founding then they have no trump card left. Sending just Annie means even if she gets captured they still have 2 spies in order to identify and get the founding or some other titan
@@Trafolol that’s true
The music in this Show is so incredibly good, no matter how often I watch/hear it I cant believe it...
